1 NAVICOM DYNAMICS RTK BASE STATION INSTALLATION AND COMMISSIONING INSTRUCTIONS 1. Locate a suitable position inside the building to install the Base Station enclosure where mains power (240V AC) is available and the RF cable runs are as short as possible. The enclosure must not be mounted outside. 2. Mount the enclosure using the mounting brackets provided. 3. Mount the GPS antenna outside in a location where it is not blocked by nearby objects and has a clear 360 degree view of the sky. NOTE: Do not mount the antenna close to other transmitting antennas. If the GPS antenna must be mounted close to other antennas a minimum distance of 3 metre separation must be observed. Avoid mounting the GPS antenna anywhere near a VHF antenna operating in the Marine band. 4. Mount the UHF antenna as high as possible observing the precautions in paragraph 3. The UHF antenna must have a clear view of area of operations. 5. Run and secure the RF cables from the Base Station to the antennas avoiding tight turns. NOTE: If the supplied cables are too short, it is recommended a new continuous cable is run so there are no breaks in the cable. Contact Navicom Dynamics for advice on what cables to use for runs over 10 metres. NOTE: It is recommended surge arrestors are fitted between the antennas and Base Station. Surge arrestors must have at maximum frequency of at least 2GHz with one for the GPS antenna cable having DC pass through. Ideally surge arrestors must be positioned at point of entry into the building and must be bonded to a Real Earth via copper tape. Do not use the building mains supply earth for bonding. 6. Connect the RF cables to their relevant antennas, making sure the connections are tight and no undue stress is put on the connections. 7. Wrap the cable connections with several turns of amalgamating tape. 8. Connect the RF cables to their relevant connections on the bottom of the Base Station, making sure the connections are tight. 2 9. Connect a mains cable (not provided) to the relevant terminals inside the enclosure, observing the correct polarity. THE UNIT MUST BE EARTHED. 10. Switch on the mains power and observe the Red Power indicator is lit. 11. Switch on the transmitter by turning the key switch and observe the Green TX On indicator is lit. 12. The unit is now operational and will start transmitting corrections after approx. 15mins after automatically determining its position. Maximum accuracy will be achieved after 24 hours of continuous operation. 13. Set up the Portable Pilot Unit (PPU) outside as per its operating instructions, switch it on and check to make sure the PPU is receiving the RTK corrections by monitoring its DGPS RX and DGPS Lock indicators. 6 Base Station UHF UHF Collinear Antennas Models COLU3, COLU6 & COLU8 The UHF Collinear design is an omnidirectional gain antenna and can be used where communication with a number of randomly placed outstations is required. It is available in 3 models to suit path requirements. The internal radiating element is housed in a high dielectric fibreglass radome to minimise the effects of precipitation or wind static to provide low noise operation. The radome is finished in gloss white and a 1m RG213 tail is fitted as standard. The antenna is constructed with high quality materials to ensure long life and reliable operation. The heavy duty Universal Mounting Clamp (CLUV) is provided, which enables mounting to either a vertical or horizontal mounting support.
