After drop/add week, each student will be given a student # that is associated with your designated TA group. During classes, we will break out into T.A. groups for purposes of in-class activities, group discussion, group assignments, and portions of exam reviews. Your instructor will float across groups to provide feedback and answer questions. You are expected to behave in a professional and on-task manner at all times during class, when unsure how to behave, follow your TA s guidance for the tone and style for group discussions. NOTE: If you want, you may purchase a digital text rather than a paper text. If you rent a paper text, rent the 2 nd edition. If you purchase a text, then for resale purposes, you may want to purchase the 3 rd edition because the fall PSY2012 classes will likely use it. I cannot make any guarantees about book buy-backs, so purchase at your own discretion.

2 Overview Attendance This course is an overview of major topics in modern psychology, the scientific study of behavior, and mental processes. As a first course in the discipline of psychology, it introduces some of the fundamental concepts, principles, and theories with a consideration for the complexity of human behavior. Course Goals 1. To teach you the science behind psychology and how it differs from the media s interpretation. 2. To provide you with an introduction to the different areas within the field of psychology. 3. To teach you the concepts in the field and how to apply them. Expectations You are expected to attend class regularly and carry out the reading assignments listed in this syllabus. You are also expected to check your regularly (at least once a day) and to visit E-learning on a regular basis. Students typically find that for each hour in class, at least two additional hours are required for preparation. I am here to help you learn the course content! I will help you get started with organization and study plans. You will not receive points for attending class. You are expected to attend class in order to obtain valuable information that will help you to succeed on exams and assignments. You will receive some assignment points during class. Examinable material The lectures and the readings from the textbooks listed below define the full syllabus of this course. Certain sections of the textbooks that are not examinable are identified at the bottom of the lecture timetable below. Assessment (EXAMS) You will be tested in two non-cumulative multiplechoice short exams during class hours (see list below for dates) as well as a mid-term and noncumulative final. There are no special exams, optional papers or catch-up projects to compensate for poor exam performance. All exams are closed book and closed notes and you will need your UFID card a #2 pencil for the bubble sheet. If you foresee an unavoidable conflict with an exam date, then immediately contact your instructor at psy2012.jann@gmail.com to schedule a make-up time. If you need to miss an exam for a serious reason (e.g., death in the family, serious illness, University athletic commitment, etc.), you must contact me immediately to provide written proof (e.g., Doctor s note) of excuse, and then schedule a make-up time. You are expected to behave in a professional manner and make it to ALL exams in spite of challenging environmental events that are NOT serious such as summer rain, a missed bus, difficulties getting out of bed, and your dog eating your keys. I will not make special accommodations for the aforementioned excuses. I am willing to provide recommendations about how to avoid these problems in the future. A 10-pt. make-up penalty will be deducted from your grade AND a portion of your exam will be WRITTEN (not MC).

3 Grading Exams: There will be a total of two multiplechoice exams (30 pts. each). In addition to these exams you will have a mid-term (80 pts.) and a non-cumulative final (80 pts.). Assignments: You will be required to complete a mix of out-of-class and in-class assignments. There are 5 assignment due dates. Each assignment is worth 10 pts. Some assignments will be independent; others, later in the term will require a mix of group work, homework, and in-class presentation. Each student will be graded individually. These assignments will aim to prepare you for more advanced courses, professional development, and course content. All assignment instructions will be reviewed inclass and also posted on Sakai. You will submit assignments via My Psych Lab, Sakai, and on paper in class, depending on the instructions for that assignment. All assignments will result in a permanent product of independent work that will be graded according to a 10-pt. rubric with 1-pt. increments. Late Assignments: If you foresee the inability to complete an assignment on time, speak with your instructor ASAP. Individual work will be accepted late with a 1-pt. penalty for every 12 hours that elapse past the due time. Additionally, a brief statement that explains how you will avoid late submissions in the future will be REQUIRED for grading. No work will be accepted (i.e., 0 pts) past 8/8/13. Research Experience: See next page. Honor Code It is important that you understand that I am not willing to give a passing grade to those who do not abide by the UF honor code. Any student who cheats or helps another student cheat will receive an E (Fail) in this class. Everybody in the class can get an A grade (and I hope you do). The bad news is these grades are firm there is no curve. If you score just one pt. below the cutoff then you will get the lower grade. The contents of this syllabus may be changed during the semester. If changes are made to this syllabus they will be announced in class and on Sakai. It is your responsibility to come to class and to check for announcement of any changes online.

4 Experimental participation requirement (A.K.A. Research Experience) There is a Psychology Department requirement that all students enrolled in PSY 2012 participate in a research experience. Completion of this requirement affects your course grade based on the amount of research credits you earn. More details are available within the Course Guide. DECLARE OPTION 2 BY MON JULY 15 AT 4:00 PM. Option 2: Is a paper assignment. Rules and details are available in the Research Requirement document on Sakai. COMPLETE BY FRIDAY AUGUST 2, 2013 AT 4:00 PM - OR - NO NEED TO DECLARE THIS OPTION OPTION 1 (JANN SAYS: THIS IS THE MOST COMMON CHOICE): One credit is given for every halfhour you spend in an experiment, and you need to earn 10 credits in total. (This is equivalent to 5 hours of participation in research). When you complete the research experience by completing 5 hours (10 credits) of research, you will receive 20 pts. that are added into your PSY2012 grade. If you do NOT complete the full number of credits by the deadline, you will receive pts. at a rate of 2 pts. per credit completed.
