1 Millstone Elementary School Math Placement Grade Six In grade six, we have two options of mathematics instruction. Most students are placed in our regular math program, using Glencoe s Math Connects Program: Course 1, covering a wide range of mathematical topics appropriate for 6 th graders. Some students are placed in Pre Algebra and use Glencoe s Pre Algebra Program, providing an introduction to the language and usage of algebraic concepts. In an effort to place each student at a level that ensures both success and challenge, we look carefully at the following measures: Overall grade in mathematics End of course math assessment Advanced problem solving test NJ ASK Math score A student s performance on each of the measures is assigned a point value according to the tables provided below. Students who score points are placed in thepre Algebra Program. Students who score below 16 points participate in the Math Connects Program: Course 1, with enrichment as needed. Math placement is not an exact science. Nevertheless, the score threshold we have established has proven to be a reliable predictor of success. 4 Millstone Elementary School Math Placement Grade Seven In grade seven, we have three options of mathematics instruction. Most students are placed in our regular math program, using Glencoe s Math ConnectsProgram: Course 2. Some students are placed in our Algebra I math classes, using Glencoe s Algebra I Program. Students have the option of completing their Algebra I studies over a one year or two year period. In an effort to place each student at a level that ensures both success and challenge, we look carefully at the following measures: Overall grade in mathematics End of course math assessment NJ ASK Math and Language Arts scores Algebra Aptitude test A student s performance on each of the measures is assigned a point value according to the tables provided below with the maximum possible score points accrued equaling 20. Any students scoring 19 and above on the rubric are provided the option of completing their Algebra I program over the course of one full year. Students who score points are afforded the option to complete their Algebra I program over the course of two years. Students who score below 15 points participate in the Math Connects Program: Course 2, with enrichment as needed. Math placement is not an exact science. Nevertheless, the score threshold we have established has proven to be a reliable predictor of success. In an effort to place each student at a level that ensures both success and challenge, we look carefully at the student s prior experiences in mathematics, as well as their performance. Math Connects Program, Course 3 Algebra I, P art 2 PREREQUISITE: ALGEBRA I, PART 1 Geometry PREREQUISITE: ALGEBRA I, FULL YEAR Math placement is not an exact science. Nevertheless, the process we have established has proven to be a reliable predictor of success and any extenuating circumstances will be evaluated on a case by case basis.
