2 Internet History Initial impetus in part from USSR Sputnik satellite launch 1958 Evolved from U.S. Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET) Facilitated educational community research, collaboration, resources Now a global WAN using TCP/IP suite, Client-Server, Peer to Peer WWW evolved 1993 as Internet sites organizer Browsers made access easy for the masses Mosaic, Netscape, MS Internet Explorer, Firefox

4 Windows Networking: Locations Choosing a network location When first connecting to a network, choose a location Windows will Auto-configure firewall, security settings location For home, public areas, work, choosing a location ensures PC is set to appropriate security level. There are four network locations: 1. Home: Where you trust people, devices on the network PCs on home network can belong to a Homegroup. Network discovery on by default: Allows you see other network computers, devices Allows other network users to see your computer.

5 Windows Networking: Locations 2. Work: Small office or other workplace networks. Network discovery on by default. Homegroup not available 3. Public: Coffee shop, airport networks Keeps your PC from being visible to other computers around you Helps protect PC from malicious software from the Internet Network discovery off by default. Homegroup not available Choose if connected directly to Internet without router, or if you have a mobile broadband connection. 4. Domain: Enterprise workplace networks Network location controlled by NW administrator (you can't select or change)

6 Windows Networking: Locations Note: If you don t need to share files or printers, safest choice is Public network Choosing a Home or Work network changes firewall to allow communication To choose a network location Open the Network and Sharing Center in Control Panel Click Work, Home, or Public network location you want. What makes a home or work network safe to connect to? Firewall and or device with Network Address Translation (NAT) between your PC or wireless access point, and your cable or DSL modem. Wireless connection encrypted with Wi-Fi Protected Access (e.g. WPA).

7 Windows Networking: Firewall Effects How Windows Firewall affects network locations To protect PC from unauthorized access while connected to a public NW, setting location as Public blocks certain programs, services If connected to a public network and Windows Firewall is on, programs or services may need to communicate through firewall so they work properly However if you allow a program to communicate through the firewall, it's allowed for every NW with the same location as the one currently connected e.g. If you connect to coffee shop NW, choose Public network location, then unblock an application, that program will be unblocked for all public NWs Solution: To unblock multiple programs while connected to a Public network, consider changing the NW location to Home or Work network

8 Windows Networking: Sharing Resources Network Shared Resources Visible in Windows Explorer under Homegroup or Network Shared Folders In Home location your libraries will be shared on the network Right click a volume or folder in Explorer, choose Sharing Drive Mapping Can assign an unused drive letter to a network folder e.g. Z: Quickly access remote shared folder without having to browse for it Note the difference between Local and Network (remote) drives 8

10 Windows Networking: Joining a Homegroup When you identify a network location as home you will automatically be prompted to join a Homegroup 10

11 File sharing: Homegroup Homegroup: Peer to Peer workgroup of PCs sharing pics, music, videos, documents, printers Easiest way to share files on home network is create or join a Homegroup To participate in a Homegroup, all PCs must be running Windows 7 minimum When setting up or joining a Homegroup, you tell Windows which folders or libraries to share, and which to leave private Others can't change the files you share unless you give them permission You can set an optional password to protect your Homegroup Homegroups available in all Windows 7 editions, but Home Basic and Starter editions can only join a Homegroup, not create Domain PCs can join Homegroups, but can't share files, only access files

12 Windows 7: Share With menu (Homegroup) Share With menu Selects individual files, folders to share Menu options depend on item type, and network type Right-click item to share, click Share with, then select option: Nobody Homegroup (Read) Homegroup (Read/Write) Specific people Item is private so only you have access. Item is available, but read-only Item is fully available to homegroup Opens File Sharing wizard to let you choose who to share the item with Share With won't appear for files outside your personal folder If you try to share something in a Public folder, Share With menu will display option called Advanced sharing settings. Takes you to Control Panel, where can turn Public folder sharing on or off

13 Windows 7: Share with menu (Domain) Sharing files, folders on Workgroup or Domain Right-click item to share, click Share With, then click Specific people. In File Sharing wizard, click arrow next to text box, then click Find people. In Select Users or Groups dialog box, type a name in the box, click Check Names, and then click OK. Tip: If you know the name of the person you want to share with, type it in the File Sharing wizard, and click Add. Under Permission Level column, select Read or Read/Write to choose how much access to give people to your files. When finished adding people, click Share, then Done

14 Windows 7: Sharing To stop sharing a file or folder Right-click item to stop sharing, click Share With, and then click Nobody. To access shared files, folders, libraries on Homegroup PCs Click the Start button, then click your user name. In navigation pane, under Homegroup, click account whose files you want In file list, double-click library to access, then double-click item Note PCs turned off, hibernating, asleep won't appear in navigation pane.

15 Windows 7: Sharing Public Folders Public folders Share files, folders by copying or moving them into Public folders Immediately available to other users on computer or network Public folders are located in each of your libraries e.g. Public Documents, Public Music, Public Pictures, Public Videos. Public folder sharing is turned off by default, except in Homegroups To turn Public folder sharing on or off If Public folder sharing is on, anybody on network can access Public files Click to open Advanced sharing settings. Turn ON: Anyone with network access can read, write Public folder files Turn OFF: Only people logged on to the computer can still access folders

16 File Sharing: Permissions Permissions You can decide who gets to see a file, and what they can do with it These are called sharing permissions. You have two options: Read Recipients can open, but not modify or delete a file. Read/Write Recipients can open, modify, or delete a file. Viewing what items are shared: You can view what is shared by looking at the Details pane in a folder window. When you click any file or folder, the details pane at the bottom of the window will show you whether it is shared and who it is shared with. Explorer shows you files you have shared, and files others have shared

17 Advanced Sharing Advanced sharing For security some Windows locations can't be shared directly using Share With menu. Must use Advanced sharing instead e.g. Entire drives (C:), system folders (Users, Windows) To share using Advanced sharing Right-click drive, folder, click Share With, then Advanced sharing. In dialog box, click Advanced Sharing In Advanced Sharing dialog box, select Share this folder check box. To specify users or change permissions, click Permissions. Click Add or Remove to add or remove users or groups. Select user or group, select check boxes for permissions to assign

19 Remote Assistance Allows remote assistance Connects two PCs so one person can help troubleshoot problems on other persons PC while they are logged on. Both persons can initiate chat sessions to explain problem Windows Easy Connect wizard simplifies connecting to another PC remotely with only a password 19

20 Remote Desktop Allows remote control Use Remote Desktop Connection to take over remote PC and access all of its programs, files, and network resources May require Virtual Private Network (VPN) to gain access to remote firewalled network Need group membership on remote PC (Admin users OK) 20
