They must live in an area not serviced by other food banks and within the immediate Somerset area. 4 Perry County Job & Family Services Local: (740) Toll Free: Fax: (740) Food Assistance Fact Sheet What are Food Assistance benefits (formerly known as Food Stamps)? The Food Assistance program is designed to raise nutritional levels, to expand buying power and to safeguard the health and well-being of individuals in lowincome households in Ohio. Do I qualify for Food Assistance benefits? You may qualify for benefits if your household s gross monthly income is at or under 130% of the federal poverty guidelines or if someone in the household is elderly or disabled. The amount of food assistance will vary based on income amount and shelter expenses. How can I apply for Food Assistance? Food Assistance applications can be filled out in person at Perry County Job and Family Services, online at or at any Ohio Benefit Bank Location. What will I need to apply for Food Assistance? Proof of: o Social Security Number or proof of applying for your SSN o Income (pay stubs, tax records, child support) o Identity o Child/dependent care costs o Child support paid for children not living with you o Housing and utility costs o Any medical expenses for those with disabilities or for those over age 60 (including prescriptions) What Can I buy with Food Assistance? You can use your Food Assistance benefits to buy most food products intended for human consumption including items at Perry County Farmers Markets. Items that may not be purchased with benefits: o Alcoholic beverages o Tobacco o Vitamins or medications o Hot foods that are prepared to be eaten immediately o Non-food items (pet food, paper products, soaps, household supplies)
5 Commodity Supplemental Food Program Are you age 60 or older and struggle to make it through the month with enough food? The Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) provides food boxes once a month to nutritionally at-risk, income eligible participants. Each CSFP food package contains a variety of USDA donated commodities that may include: Cereal Grits Powdered milk Pasta Evaporated milk Cheese Rice Canned meat/poultry Peanut butter Canned fruit Canned vegetables Fruit Juice Dry Beans Oats 1. Be age 60 or older 2. Reside in project area 3. Meet specific income standards 4. Show proof of age 5. 6 Food Tips Make a list of everything in your pantry, fridge, and freezer by dividing it into 5 categories: meat and fish; produce; grains; dairy; and other (sauces, broths, etc). Now that you know what you have, you can find ways to give them new life! Choose items from your list to make a casserole. Casseroles are a great way to make a few, seemingly random items into a healthy & delicious meal! Check out this website to get some wonderful casserole ideas: Give small quantities of vegetables new life in a vegetable soup. Soups are not only inexpensive ways to make ingredients last longer, but a great way to make a filling & nutritious meal! There are some great soup ideas (veggie and others) at: / Repurpose leftovers to make a new meal. Not wasting any food is a great tool in making one s food budget last longer! Plus learning to repurpose leftovers allows one to break out of the unappealing leftover rut with new and exciting meals. This website offers delicious recipes for repurposing your leftovers: Find creative uses for almost spoiled items. 1) Stale bread is great for bread crumbs, croutons, or French toast! 2) Browning bananas is perfect for quick breads and muffins! 3) Soft fruits can be baked into cobblers! Use coupons and grocery store mailers to make the most of your food budget. Make sure that what you are purchasing will be used immediately or stored appropriately as not to be wasted. Consider adding one or more vegetarian meals to your menu a week to cut the cost of expensive meats from your food budget. Consider adding more beans to your menu as a substitute for meats. Create a meal plan that includes all meals will allow one to take advantage of quantity discounts that may be available for buying in bulk. Make a list of meals which can be made using items already on hand and create your grocery list from there. If a meal calls for chicken, purchase a whole chicken and create a second meal from the remaining meat. Consider serving breakfast for dinner one a week for a lower cost meal. Meals such as pancakes or French toast are filling and less expensive than traditional dinners. Plus it can be a new family tradition! Stock up on meal extenders such as dry beans, rice, and pastas to make the most of your food budget. These items can be used to makes soups, casseroles, and side dishes. Make freezer friendly foods in big batches to use later in the month such as soups, meatballs, and casseroles. Freeze smaller batches of soups for a quick on the go lunch!
