3 High School Summer School Programs Information Traditional High School Summer School The district will offer traditional classes for 6 weeks, June 15-July 24, 2015 (no school on July 3). Program hours are 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Traditional classes will be taught in a classroom setting. Classes for the High School Summer School include Anatomy/Physiology,, Math 1, 2 and 3, Physical Science, Spanish 1 and Physical Education. Not all courses will be offered at all sites. Check the schedule on the following pages. Virtual Credit Advancement Program (VCAP) VCAP classes are self-paced and will combine technology with individualized teacher instruction. Enhanced summer offerings through the Credit Flex process will allow students to create individual learning plans. Regular goal setting conferences with an instructor will support VCAP and Credit Flex students. Upon successful completion high school credits are awarded. VCAP classes will be held with three different sessions: 8:30 am 10:30 am, 10:30 am-12:30 pm, and 12:30 pm -2:30 pm. Ohio Graduation Test Preparation Program At one site, an OGT preparation program will be offered for students who need to pass one or more parts of the graduation test. OGT class times are 8:00 am 10:00 am and 10:00 am 12:00 pm. Students must attend a minimum of 10 hours to test; the OGT will be given the week of June 15-19, Please see high school counselor for an application. Attendance Daily attendance is required in order for your child to benefit from the summer school programs. Every effort should be made to get your child to school on time and ready for instruction. Please call the summer school site before 8:00 a.m. if your child is going to be absent. Students can have no more than 1 absence in Physical Education and no more than 2 absences in all other traditional classes. Credit will not be granted after two absences in physical education and three absences in all other traditional classes. Vacations/Camps Students with vacation or camp plans conflicting with the summer program dates are advised not to enroll in the High School Summer programs. Vacations and camp are not excused absences. Discipline Students are expected to follow all rules and regulations of Columbus City Schools. Discipline issues will be handled as specified in the Columbus City Schools Guide to Positive Student Behavior. Materials All books and materials loaned to students must be returned in satisfactory condition by the last day of class. Registrations Forms Student registration forms are located in this booklet. This booklet is also posted on the CCS website

4 REGISTRATION INFORMATION LOCATION All registration for High School Summer School Programs will take place at the Arts Impact Middle School (AIMS), 680 Jack Gibbs Blvd. on the Fort Hayes Campus DATES AND TIMES Registration for currently enrolled Columbus City School students in need of repeat courses June 2 12:00 p.m. 4:00 p.m. Registration for currently enrolled Columbus City School students wishing to take repeat AND advanced courses June 3 12:00 p.m. 4:00 p.m. Registration for currently enrolled Columbus City School students wishing to take repeat and advanced courses and for students not currently enrolled in Columbus City Schools (i.e. out of district, parochial and charter). Students not currently attending Columbus city Schools are asked to bring a transcript to assist with scheduling accuracy. The district will not issue refunds to students who select incorrect courses! June 5 12:00 p.m. 4:00 p.m. Registration for all students wishing to take summer courses June 6 10:00 a.m. 2:00 p.m. TUITION INFORMATION Columbus City School students pay $50 for Physical Education and $100 for Traditional and VCAP courses. Fees apply to all students legally residing within the Columbus City Schools attendance area. Non-Columbus City Schools residents pay an out-of district fee of $150 for Physical Education and $300 for Traditional and VCAP courses. Fees apply to all students living outside the Columbus City School attendance area. Refunds will not be issued under any circumstances once classes begin. Tuition must be paid at the time of registration. Cash or money order made payable to: Columbus City Schools No personal checks will be accepted.

5 Traditional classes are held for six weeks in a classroom setting with a certified teacher. Classes meet daily from 8:00 am -12:30 p.m., Monday-Friday, June 15-July 24, Students can have no more than 1 absence in Physical Education and no more than 2 absences in all other traditional classes. Credit will not be granted after 2 absences in Physical Education and 3 absences in all other traditional classes. Traditional Course Descriptions Anatomy/Physiology (1.0 CR) (6 weeks) 8:00 12:30 Location: Downtown High School Students will explore the human body in an in-depth study of human structure and function. Math 1 (1.0 CR) (6 weeks) 8:00 12:30 Location: All sites except West High School Students will be introduced to Common Core mathematical processes and develop prerequisite skills for all future math courses Math 2 (1.0 CR) (6 weeks) 8:00 12:30 Location: All sites except West High School Prerequisite: Math 1: Students will focus on computational based skills with emphasis on problem solving. Math 3 (1.0 CR) (6 weeks) 8:00 12:30 Location: Downtown High School Prerequisite: Math 1 and 2: Students will incorporate functions and graphs to describe, model and solve problems. Advanced Qualitative Reasoning (1.0 CR) (6 weeks) 8:00 12:30 Location: Downtown High School Prerequisite: Math 1, 2 and 3: Students will focus on the reinforcement of computational methods and be introduced to statistics. Physical Science (1.0 CR) (6 weeks) 8:00 12:30 Location: Downtown High School Students will be introduced to physics, chemistry, astronomy and earth science. Students will have hands-on activities through experiments, application problem solving and discussions about the physical world. Spanish I (1.0 CR) (6 weeks) 8:00 12:30 Location: Downtown High School Students will learn Spanish as a tool for speaking, listening and reading as well as gaining cultural insights. Physical Education (.25 CR) (3 weeks) 8:00 12:30 Location: Centennial and South Session I: June 15-July 2 Session II: July 6 July 24. Students will participate in activities that develop physical fitness, a positive self-image, cooperative skills and promote life-long sports and activities.

6 VIRTUAL CREDIT ADVANCEMENT PROGRAM (VCAP) The Columbus City Schools Virtual Credit Advancement Program (VCAP) offers students an individualized, blended approach to earning course credit through online instructional delivery utilizing Plato Learning Environment software. The Columbus City Schools VCAP provides students with an alternative method for earning high school credits toward graduation. A certificated teacher will be in each classroom to assist students with the online instruction. VCAP courses will be offered at all of our summer school sites. DATES: JUNE 15-JULY 24, 2015 (no school on July 3) TIMES: VCAP classes will be offered in two hour blocks: 8:30 10:30, 10:30 12:30 and 12:30-2:30. Students may register for one or two 2- hour blocks that meet daily (Monday Friday) until coursework is completed. LOCATIONS: WEST, CENTENNIAL, DOWNTOWN HIGH SCHOOL, INDEPENDENCE, MIFFLIN, AND SOUTH VCAP Course Offerings: English 9 English 10 English 11 English 12 Math 1 Math 2 Math 3 Advanced Qualitative Reasoning World Studies US Studies Globalization Democratic Citizenship Physical Science Biology Chemistry Health Course Mastery: To receive credit for courses in VCAP, students must demonstrate mastery of the subject matter. This means students must pass the total assigned activities with an overall average of 60% or higher. To obtain the overall average students must complete all Post Test and earn an average of 60% or higher. In addition an individual score of 60% or higher must be earned on the End of course exam. Some courses also have mandatory written assignments. Students can earn the following grades by mastering their courses with completion of: Grading Scale: 98% -100% = A+ 92% 97% = A 90% -91% = A- 88% 89% = B+ 82% 87% = B 80% 81% = B- 78% 79% = C+ 72% 77% = C 70% 71% = C- 68% 69% = D+ 62% 67% = D 60% - 61% = D- 0% 59% = F Course Load: Students may register for a maximum of 2 courses: One traditional class and one VCAP class or 2 VCAP classes

8 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE HIGH SCHOOL SUMMER LEARNING PROGRAMS 1. Can anyone attend the high school summer learning program? Priority is given to currently enrolled Columbus City Schools' students. Students who live in the Columbus City School District attendance area, but attend a parochial or charter school can attend if space is available. Students who live outside of the district may enroll if space is available on June 5 and Is there a charge to attend the high school summer learning program? Yes. Columbus City School students pay $50 for Physical Education, $100 for Traditional and VCAP courses. Fees apply to all students legally residing within the Columbus City Schools attendance area. All high school students will be accepted if space allows. Please refer to the Registration Information on the previous page. 5. Will transportation be provided for the high school learning programs? Columbus students will be given COTA bus passes to use for transportation. 6. Can middle school students attend High School Summer school? Yes. Middle school students who have completed the prerequisites needed may attend high school summer school. 7. Who should I call if I have questions about the high school summer programs?
