2 Installing Matrix 7.5 Follow these instructions to install Matrix 7.5. Before beginning the installation process, verify the computer on which the program will be installed meets the minimum requirements to run Matrix 7.5. Visit our website ( ) to view the most up-to-date system requirements required to run Matrix 7.5. A computer which meets the Matrix 7.5 system requirements Matrix 7.5 install disc Rhino serial code Matrix 7 dongle 1 Verifying the Operating System An Operating System (OS) is a program designed to run other programs on a computer, e.g. Microsoft Windows. Your first step of Matrix installation is determined by which operating system is installed on your computer. To verify the computer s OS follow these steps: If you have a Start button, left-click the Start button. In Windows XP it might look like this: (which tells you that you probably have XP) Just above the Start button you will see a box you can type a search in, or in XP you will see a button labeled Run. Windows 7 and Vista: In the search box or the Run box, type the command winver and then press OK. This will bring up a window showing the version of Windows that is installed on your computer. 2

4 2 Administrators In order to install Matrix 7.5, the current User Profile must be set to the Administrator level. To check and see if you have administrator rights, please do the following: Windows 7, Vista or XP Left-click the Start button. Right-click the Computer button. Left-click the Manage button. Windows 8 From the Windows 8 Application-Start screen type computer. 4

7 From the list at right, Double-click the Administrators item. In the Administrative Group above you will see two Matrix Users; Matrix User, and GEMVISION\Matrix User. When you see just the user account (ie: Matrix User) in the list, it means that this User Account is part of the Administrative group on this computer, and has full access to everything. When you see a user account with other information prefacing it, (ie: GEMVISION\Matrix User) this is called a Domain. A Domain is a Group of users connected to the same Local Network that share a common set of resources such as Server Drives, Printers, Etc. If you are not part of a Domain, that is perfectly fine. As long as you see your User Account is in the list of Administrators above, you have confirmed that you are using an Administrative account and can continue with the installation process. 3 User Account Control NOTE: It is not necessary to turn off User Account Control to install Matrix 7.5. This is completely optional. However, if UAC is left ON you must set Matrix to run as an Administrator after installing Matrix 7.5 and BEFORE you first open Matrix. See instructions in Item 7. We have left these instructions in for your convenience. However, you may skip to Item 4 to continue with the installation instructions. User Account Control (UAC) is a feature in Windows that can help prevent unauthorized changes to your computer. UAC does this by asking you for permission or an administrator password before performing actions that could potentially affect your computer's operation or that change settings that affect other users. However, UAC is not a replacement for software that protects against viruses or malware. 7

8 Many users prefer to run their computer without UAC on. Often times, users get too familiar with the constant messages that UAC send asking whether a program should be allowed to start. Typically on our computers here at Gemvision we turn UAC off. Depending on your comfort level of having UAC on or off, you can choose to leave it on or turn it off. If you have any questions about UAC and whether it should be on, please consult your IT professional or computer consultant. Turning UAC off (optional): Vista: Left-click the Start button. Left-click the Control Panel button. Left-click the User Accounts button. Left-click Turn User Account Control on or off Once in that window, uncheck the box next to Use User Account Control and then click the OK button. Please re-boot the computer after making this change. Windows 7: Left-click the Start button. In the search box, type the command uac and then click on Change User Account Control settings. This will display the UAC settings window. By default, Windows 7 is set to Notify only when computers try to make changes to your computer. 8

9 To turn off UAC, move the slider down to Never Notify and then click OK. You will be prompted by Windows to allow or disallow this change to Windows. After clicking allow, you will need to restart Windows for this change to take effect even if Windows does not prompt you to do so! Windows 8: From the Windows 8 Application-Start screen type settings. Click on Settings below the Search box. In the Search box type user account control. Press Enter on your keyboard. Left-click on Change User Account Control Settings. This will display the UAC settings window. By default, Windows 8 is set to Notify only when computers try to make changes to your computer. 9

10 To turn off UAC, move the slider down to Never Notify and then click OK. You will be prompted by Windows to allow or disallow this change to Windows. After clicking allow, you will need to restart Windows for this change to take effect even if Windows does not prompt you to do so! NOTE: Turning off UAC in Windows 8 Professional will not fully allow programs to Run as Administrator. 4 DPI Settings In order for the menus and the text on those menus to display correctly in Matrix, the DPI settings (how many pixels are used to display the images on your monitor) must be set correctly. Please follow these instructions to set your DPI settings to the correct settings. Vista: Left-click the Start button. In the search box just above the Start button, type the command dpiscaling and then press OK. This will display a button you can click on to load the DPI Scaling menu. 10 hevista:

11 . Click the radio button next to the Default scale (96 DPI) option. Click OK to complete this step. Windows 7: Click the radio button next to Smaller 100%. Click the Apply button to complete this step. Windows 8: Windows 8 defaults to Smaller-100%. No adjustment is needed for Windows 8 DPI settings. 11

12 5 Matrix 7.5 Installation DVD Place the Matrix 7.5 Installation DVD into the DVD drive. If your computer is programmed to auto launch DVD s, installation instructions will automatically appear on the screen. You might also get a window asking if you wish to run the autorun.exe file. Click the link to run the file. Windows 8: Click or tap the notice, CD Drive (D) Matrix75_64bit. Choose Run autorun.exe. Otherwise, from the Start menu, choose Computer and locate your DVD drive to manually launch the DVD. 12

13 NOTE: The Installation Menu options will vary by Operating System. See Item 6 below. 6 Installation by Operating System The Operating Systems listed below are supported. Matrix bit also is supported on Windows Operating Systems in German, Italian, French and Spanish. For 32-bit Windows Operating Systems, Rhinoceros and Matrix 32-bit versions will be installed. For 64-bit Windows Operating Systems, Rhinoceros and Matrix 64-bit versions will be installed. NOTE: If Rhinoceros 5 32-bit is already installed Matrix bit will also be functional. A desktop shortcut can manually be created and added to access Matrix bit if desired. See optional item 8 below. Windows XP (only 32-bit install supported): 1. Install Windows Installer 4.5 (required to complete software installation.) 2. Install.Net Frameworks Install Rhinoceros 5, 32-bit. 4. Install Matrix 7.5, 32-bit. 13

14 Windows Vista 32-bit or 64-bit: 1. Install.Net Frameworks Install Rhinoceros 5, 32-bit or 64-bit. 3. Install Matrix 7.5, 32-bit or 64-bit. (NOTE: If UAC is turned ON you must set Matrix and Rhino to run as an Administrator BEFORE you first open Matrix. See instructions in Item 7 below.) Windows 7 32-bit or 64-bit: 1. Install.Net Frameworks Install Rhinoceros 5, 32-bit or 64-bit. 3. Install Matrix 7.5, 32-bit or 64-bit. (NOTE: If UAC is turned ON you must set Matrix and Rhino to run as an Administrator BEFORE you first open Matrix. See instructions in Item 7 below.) Windows 8 32-bit or 64-bit: 1. Install.Net Framework 3.5 (includes 2.0 and 3.0). 2. Install Rhinoceros 5, 32-bit or 64-bit. (NOTE: If UAC is turned ON you must set Rhino to run as an Administrator BEFORE you open Rhinoceros. See instructions in Item 7 below.) 3. OPEN Rhino 5 once to Validate your Rhino 5 License. ***You must OPEN RHINO 5 alone first to register the Plug-Ins properly. Open Rhino 5. Then, close Rhino 5. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP*** 4. Install Matrix 7.5, 32-bit or 64-bit. (NOTE: If UAC is turned ON you must set Matrix to run as an Administrator BEFORE you open Matrix. See instructions in Item 7 below.) 7 Run as Administrator (Required for Users with UAC left ON) Matrix: Right-click on the Matrix 7.5 short cut icon on your desktop and choose Properties. Click on Advanced towards the bottom right. Check the box Run as Administrator. Click on Apply and OK. Rhinoceros : Right-click on the Rhino short cut icon on your desktop and choose Properties. Click on Advanced towards the bottom right. Check the box Run as Administrator. Click on Apply and OK. 14

15 8 Creating a Desktop Shortcut (optional) If both Rhinoceros 5 32-bit and 64-bit are previously installed Matrix 75 will install both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. However, the 64-bit version will be the only desktop shortcut that installs automatically. Follow the instructions below to add another desktop shortcut for the 32-bit version if desired. Make a copy of the Matrix desktop shortcut. (Right-click on icon and choose Copy. Right-click on desktop and choose Paste) Right-click on the new copy of the Matrix desktop shortcut icon and choose Properties. In the Shortcut tab, press spacebar once and add the text -x86 at the end of the Target field as shown below: 15

16 9 Updates Service releases and small updates to Matrix occur occasionally. If your computer is connected to the internet, you will receive an update announcement as well as other important announcements within the splash screen when you launch Matrix 7.5. Take note, when an update is released, an announcement will also be placed on the Gemvision Forum. Notice of Rhino Updates: Gemvision tests and approves any Rhino Service Releases for compatibility with Matrix. Gemvision will post on the forum when it is okay to install Rhino updates. 16
