1 Hello Krimmel Knights, I am sure that all of you are very excited about continuing your Intermediate School career at Krimmel. The Krimmel Knights have many great things planned for you in the upcoming school year. School will start on Monday, August 26, 2013, and we have many things to get ready for you before that day. Our Back to School Blitz is scheduled for the following day: Thursday, August 22 nd, 2012 from 4:00 pm 7:00 pm This is a time set-aside for all returning seventh and eighth grade students to get prepared for the new school year. Parents and students will have an opportunity to do the following: Purchase a School Supply Packet ($35.00) Pick-up your textbooks ( Optional - See Textbook letter) Sign your Tablet PC Agreement form. Pay your Tablet PC Accident and Damage fee ($70.00 per year/$35.00 semester) at the BLITZ or on-line. See the attached letter for more information. Buy a School Spirit Shirt ($15.00) Deposit money in your lunch account. Meet the Nurse and turn in medical and shot records. Join the PTO This is a great time for all of our returning Knights to get ready for the new school year. Some of the Krimmel staff will be on hand to answer questions. 2 The First day of school is Monday, August 26, 2013 On the first day, sixth graders are to report to the gym by 8:40 am. They will pick-up a new copy of their schedule and wait in the bleachers. The Krimmel cheerleaders will welcome the students and Mr. Crowe will introduce each sixth grade teacher. The teachers will walk their students to class. Seventh and Eighth Grade students will pick-up their schedules in the cafeteria and will be dismissed by the bell. 1 st Day/Week Transportation Students planning to ride the bus should be prepared to meet their bus at the nearest corner of their street by 8:15 am. After school, buses may be running a little late and students will probably be late arriving home from school. After the first week, the transportation department will have everything working smoothly. You can access Transfinder at Click on Bus Services to check your pick-up and drop-off locations. Traffic Tips for a successful year: Please follow the traffic tips below as we start the year. We will review and analyze the traffic issues after school starts to determine if we need to make a change. Front Entrance: Parents may enter the school parking lot at the front entrance by the Krimmel marquee. The other front entrance is for KISD transportation only. Back Entrance: Parents may also use the drive coming from Mueller Elementary. Please continue to the front of the building to drop-off and pick-up students. Please be cautious of students walking to school and follow all traffic signs and procedures. (Cell phone use in cars while on campus is prohibited) Student Drop-Off and Pick-Up: Car Riders will be asked to exit the front of the building and be picked up under the covered walkway by the main office. Students will only be allowed to exit or enter cars by the front door. Students may not be dropped off or picked up in the parking lot. Students are not allowed to be picked up in the back or on the side of the building. Student Pick-up: Both lanes will be utilized for carpools. Please do not cross over lanes, as this may jeopardize student safety. Administrators and teachers on duty will assist in keeping both lanes of traffic continually moving, while helping students safely get to their vehicle. Please follow the directions of the administrators and teachers on duty to ensure the safety of your children. Bike Riders: Students should lock their bikes at the bike rack located behind the cafeteria and report to the cafeteria. After school, bike riders should exit the building by the cafeteria and walk to the bike rack. Walkers: Students walking from nearby subdivisions should enter the cafeteria when they arrive on campus. If you arrive before 8:30 you will need to go the Library for our Homework Help program. After school, students should exit the building in the back and use the sidewalks that lead to their subdivisions.

3 Opening Day/Week Procedures: The first day of school for all students can be a little overwhelming. Coming to a new school is exciting. At Krimmel, we work hard to help make our Knights feel right at home on the first day. Each subject area teacher will be assigned specific procedures to cover with all students. Throughout the week, teachers will continue to review procedures in our Krimmel Kamp to help make students feel comfortable and aware of all procedures. Opening Day Packet: This packet will contain many important papers for you to look at, sign and return with your student. In the days to follow additional campus and specific classroom information will be sent home. Dress Code: All students will be required to follow the KISD Intermediate School Handbook information regarding Dress Code for Intermediate School students. School Officials will make every effort to help the students correct dress code violations so they can stay at school before parents are called. Here are some general reminders concerning Dress Code: Shorts and skirts must be mid-thigh in length. Pants must be secured at the waist. Excessively baggy pants are not permitted. Girls shirts and blouses must cover their stomach. Bare midriffs are not allowed. Tank tops, low cut, or see-through type blouses are not allowed. Summer styled tops that show a girls bra or bra straps are not permitted. T-shirts with inappropriate messages are not allowed. This includes popular styles and brands. Students may not have facial piercings of any kind. Earrings are acceptable for both girls and boys. Hair color must be natural. Excessive tinted colors or distracting hair colors or styles will not be permitted. Students with unusual or excessively bizarre haircuts, shaved designs in their hair or disruptive hair styles will be asked to change the style or serve time in ISS. Breakfast and Lunch Information: (Prices last year. Possible price changes for ) Breakfast will be $1.10 and lunches will be $2.05 for the hot lunch meal (Klein Line and Pizza / Sub line only). Ala Carte items will vary in price. Students buying their breakfast or lunch will be required to use their Personal Identification Number (PIN) each time they purchase an item. The PIN number will be given to them the first day of school. It is important for students to keep their PIN number private. Please help them understand that they should not share their PIN number with other students. Students and parents may go to the Klein ISD web page and find out a variety of information regarding cafeteria rules and guidelines.

4 These include some of the following: Lunch Menu Pay Pal system (Prepay system for parents to put money into their child s lunch account) How to control/block certain items that you do not want your child to purchase Students may buy or bring their lunch to school. During the 1 st week, many students choose to bring their lunch until they learn the lunchroom procedures. Students purchasing a lunch have three (3) options. Klein Line: A variety of entrees each day. Pizza/Sub Line: A variety of pizzas and sub-sandwiches each day. Snack Bar: A pre-packaged entre special of the day and variety of Ala Carte items. Students will not be able to use cash in the lunch lines. Students must use the Net Cash Machine to deposit their money into their lunch account. Students may deposit checks in the lunch line to be credited into their account. The Net Cash Machine is located in the back of the cafeteria and is available for students to use before school and during lunch. Tablet PC information for parents and students: At Krimmel, every student will be assigned a Tablet PC (issued in September) to use both at school and at home. This Digital Tool will assist students in keeping all their class information throughout the year. With the Tablet PC, students will be able to keep track of all their assignments, be able to complete and turn in their assignments on time. Parents: Please make sure to work with your child throughout the year with their Tablet PC s. Check to make sure they are keeping up with their homework, assignments, studying for tests and planning for projects. Please help ensure that your student is only using the Tablet PC for appropriate school work. The Tablet PC will be an important part of your child's school day. Students will be required to carry them to every class. All of the teachers will focus on using the Tablet PC in their classes. Many of the assignments will be digitally downloaded to their tablet during the day. It is your child's responsibility to keep their tablet charged and ready to use every day. Students will be required to use an approved backpack (see attached letter) to carry their Tablet. Students may purchase their own backpacks to use at Krimmel, as long as it conforms to the backpack guidelines approved. Students will be given an additional Tablet Protection Case to put inside their backpack. The Tablet PC will fit inside this protective case.

5 Thoughts from Mr. Crowe As the first day of school gets closer, I encourage you to think about a couple of things to help prepare your student for the school year. First, sit down with your child and set some goals for the year. What kind of grades do they want to make? How successful do they want to be in their classes, clubs or organizations? Be realistic, but set high expectations. Goal setting is an important technique to ensure success. Second, take some time now to help your child get organized for the year. What strategies are they going to use to make sure they keep up with their work? How will they keep all of their subject information organized? Planning now will help your child stay organized for the entire year. Students will continue taking the STAAR test developed by the Texas Education Agency. The STAAR test is a more rigorous test that requires students to apply their knowledge, to read critically and use their problem solving skills. In order for students to be successful, we need your help. Encourage your children to read more. The reading requirement will be more stringent than ever before. Have them read a variety of short passages from many different sources (magazines, newspapers and other non-fiction sources). When asking your child questions, ask them for a detailed explanation of their answer. Do not just settle for the first answer. I look forward to seeing you on Monday, August 26 th. 6 REQUIREMENTS Seventh Grade Parents IMPORTANT CHANGES IN IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS The Texas Department of State Health Services has added new immunization requirements for students entering the seventh grade. Please check with your physician to make sure your child s immunizations are up to date. Send the most current shot record to the school nurse. Clinic fax: Your child MUST have the following immunization before the first day of classes in August Students not in compliance with state requirements will not be able to start classes. 1. Meningococcal Vaccine. 2. Varicella Vaccine: 2 doses are now required. Most students have already received the first vaccine and now a second is required. If your child had the chicken pox disease, the varicella immunization is not necessary. 3. Tdap: This immunization replaces the TD (tetanus booster). This immunization will be required if it has been more than 5 years since your child s last immunization that contained tetanus.

7 On-Line Payment Information Dear Krimmel Parents and Guardians, Beginning this year, Krimmel will be offering you a way to pay for all of your Back to School Blitz purchases online using your credit card. This includes School Supplies, PE uniforms, Locks, School Shirt and Tablet Fees. You will also be able to use this system throughout the year to pay for various class fees and other miscellaneous items. This new procedure will be an easy way for you to ensure that you have paid your student s fees and not have to worry about sending a check or cash with your student. In order to participate, you will need to register. If you have previously registered and already have an account you do not need to create a new account. Please follow the steps below to register: 1. Go to the following web site 2. Register by selecting the Get Started Now link and follow the steps to completion. 3. After you receive the confirmation , please select the Click Here option, sign in and add each of your children to your household account. The website is protected and PCI compliant. If you need assistance, you may contact the Parent Help Line at or parenthelp@schoolcashonline.com. If you pay on line then you can just come to our Back to School Blitz and pick-up the items that you purchased. You do not have to wait in the cashier line to check-out. If you do not want to pay online you may pay with cash or checks at out Back to School Blitz. You can also take care of these fees at a later date at the school in the Financial Office. I am excited to be able to bring this new opportunity to our community. 8 Approved Student Backpacks for Tablet PC Krimmel Intermediate will require all students to come prepared the first week of school with their own backpack, which will secure their school-issued Tablet PC. There are certain requirements of the backpacks that we ask you follow in order to securely protect your child s 14 Tablet PC from any incidental damage. 2 shoulders straps A zipper that securely closes the backpack The size should be large enough that it will hold a laptop that is enclosed by a hard protective sleeve (a sleeve will be in the front office for you to view the dimensions L 10 ½ x W 13 ) Below are examples of APPROVED backpack styles, as well as bags NOT APPROVED. Rolling backpacks are NOT permitted, unless a child has a medical condition which is stated in a doctor s note that is on file with our clinic. APPROVED: 2 shoulder straps, with full zipper included NOT APPROVED: Totes, Drawstring Sacks, Messenger Bags
