L E T I N Advance Notice (Pupil Free Day) Monday 31 st of October is a Pupil Free Day. Students are not required to attend school on this day. Staff will be involved in planning curriculum content for Dromana R.S.L Welfare Luncheon Yesterday we had a group of grade 5 and 6 girls perform magnificently at the annual Dromana R.S.L war veterans and widows luncheon. Chloe, Eliza, Jaylee, Tinka, Emma-Lea, Ebonie, Isabella, Georgia and Lauren sang our national anthem, I am Australian and a melody of other war time songs. The audience were thrilled with the performance and it was heart-warming to see ninety year olds and a centurion singing along with the tunes. Thanks to Mr Ross for his work in preparing the girls for the performance. We have a fantastic relationship with many community groups and yesterday was a fine example of how important those links are and the great learning that comes from embedding a sense of giving in our students. Well done girls!! Book Fair This week we have had a fabulous book fair in our school library. Many students and families have selected books not only for themselves to read but also as presents for Christmas. Already we have sold in excess of $1, worth of books. Reading books is one of life s greatest pleasures. Thankyou for supporting our Book fair!! Congratulations to all staff that have assisted during the week. Students of the Fortnight and our Stars of Science /Technology Our regular Students of the Fortnight and our Stars of Science/Technology are in this week s newsletter. Please take the time to recognise these fine students. School Traffic Thankyou to all the parents who have made for a much smoother and safer form of dropping off and picking up of students by adhering to the two minute drop off signage. I d like to thank you for your support and co-operation in maximising these initiatives. Compass Compass will always keep you informed about your child s schooling. Compass provides many useful and important functions for parents to be in touch with school, covering health, behavioural and academic issues. You can use Compass to advise school of your child s absence, receive information from the school sick bay about any non-urgent health issues your child may have experienced during their day, approve your child s participation on excursions and view your child s school report. There are many more options and features available to parents. If you do not have an address, please advise the office so we can ensure that we maintain the best communication options with you. If you have any issues setting up your device, be it a laptop, tablet or phone, please arrange to bring your device in and we can help you to set it up. 2 Walk to school Congratulations to all the students who have participated in the Walk to school program. We had a great turn out at the Dromana Information Centre and Ritchies IGA yesterday. This continues each Wednesday of October, meeting at 8:15am at both points. We look forward to seeing you next week Prep transition sessions Our transition program continues today with PMP activities for our 2017 Preps on Thursday s 3.45 to 4.30pm until the 29 th October. These activities really aim to build confidence and familiarity with the school. Prep enrolments for 2017 are now due. Enrolment forms are available from the Office. Bruce Mesley Principal Assistant Principal Report Officially Welcome Back! If I haven t been able to catch you in person yet, welcome back to school and it is great to see everyone back safe and well. Also a huge welcome to some new families who have started this term at Dromana Primary School, we hope you have enjoyed your first couple of weeks. It is also great to have our teachers back who were on long service leave before the holidays. Mr Mesley s Fitball was extremely excited and nearly burst with joy when he returned from his holiday! Canberra Camp Last week I was lucky enough to join the Grade 6 team on Dromana Primary School s first ever camp to our National Capital, Canberra. 72 students attended the 5 day camp which included a 10 hour bus trip on the Monday and Friday. Whilst at Canberra the students were immersed in brilliant educational programs coordinated by Mrs McCrabb, Ms Stafford and Ms Studdert which included visits to Government House, Parliament House, Old Parliament House, National Electoral Education Centre, National Museum, National Capital Exhibition, Australian War Memorial, Australian Institute of Sport, High Court of Australia, National Archives of Australia as well as Questacon (Science Discovery). An enormous congratulations to the Grade 6 Staff for organising such a wonderful camp as well as congratulations to the students who attended the camp as their behaviour and care for each other was simply outstanding! Girls Make Your Move (6 Week Free Fitness Program) It was a fantastic turnout on Tuesday night for our first session of the Girls Make Your Move fitness program aimed at 10+ year old girls and their significant female role model in their lives. Places are still available for interested female students and their role models with the program running in the hall for the next 5 weeks from 4pm 4:45pm. Next week the session will again be run by Kath Beary (Fitness instructor and personal trainer) followed by Peta Denehey who will run 2 weeks of yoga. The program will finish with 2 sessions of Zumba which has been organised by Lauren Johansson (Shire Youth Worker). Please visit the office to sign up to the program at any stage and thanks again to Lauren for introducing this great initiative to Dromana Primary. Excursions! There are currently plenty of excursions happening here at DPS with the first of many having occurred on Tuesday where the Grade 3 students visited the Planetarium as part of their Night and Day as well as solar system studies. Next Thursday the Grade 4s are off to the Melbourne Museum and next Friday the Grade 5 and 6 students are off to Scienceworks. Please continue to log in to Compass to stay informed with upcoming events as well as to provide any permission/ payments required as term 4 is certainly a busy time in regards to activities. Ride-2-School Congratulations to Ben Lever who was our major prize winner at the end of term 3 for the Ride-2-School program. Ben was lucky enough to win a racing jersey from Sealy s Cycles valued at over $100! DPS would like to thank Pete Sealy from Sealy s cycles for their ongoing support of our Ride-2-School program as well as our Bike Ed programs that operate for the senior school. (Bike Ed commences later this term for senior school students) Hope to see you on your bike next Wednesday down opposite the BP at 8am, it s a great way to start the day! Compass The developers at Compass have listened to community feedback and have now introduced push notifications on news feeds if you have downloaded the Compass App on your phone or your device. The App enables you to keep up to date with the latest news feeds from school however to give permission to an event or make a payment, you do still have to log in using your internet browser (government requirement). 3 Term 4 Menu Hi all The new menu is out for Term 4 with some favourites returning. Sushi on Mondays and Chicken Schnitzel Burgers on Wednesdays with Quiche on Tuesdays, Dim Sims on Thursdays and of course, Hot Dog Friday. A big thank you to all who are ordering on line with My School tuckshop. If you haven t had a chance to have a look they now have an App for iphone and Android Making it much easier. You can register for On-line ordering at All Friday Orders will need to be placed on line to help us have the entire orders ready on time. It s the possessing of the cash that takes a long time. We are covering the.33c fee for Friday orders so if you do a direct deposit it will not cost you any extra to place your Friday orders online and bags are included. Give it a go!! Calling all Junior Chefs, Cooking School is start next week. Cooking school will be starting back next week from Monday the 17th of October Grades 1-3 and Wednesday the 19 th for grades 4-6.
