1 Slide 1 - Welcome Welcome to training for the Supervisor Mentor Program for New Supervisors. The mentor program for new supervisors has been developed to provide new supervisors leadership training, coupled with practice, alongside an experienced and skilled supervisor mentor. The training will provide you with an overview of the Skill Assessment Scales outlined in your manual. Page 1 of 9

You were selected for this position based on your strong commitment to best practice, and your experience in child welfare services. You also have the ability to teach others and are able to relate well with all types of people. Thank you for creating better outcomes for families by mentoring future leaders in Indiana. 3 Slide 3 - Overview of the New Supervisor Training Process Curriculum for New Supervisors is comprised of five modules which take a total of 14 classroom training days to complete. You will work with your mentee for 6 months during the working test period, continuing through completion of all 5 modules of New Supervisor Core Training. Once your mentee has completed the working test period, you will continue to support the new supervisor for 3 additional months. Page 3 of 9

4 Slide 4 - Skill Assessment Scale 1 The Skill Assessment Scales include specific learning objectives, and core competencies which each new supervisor will learn as they progress through training. The skill assessment scale for each module is located in your manual. After your mentee completes each module you will complete a Skill Assessment Scale to ensure they are able to demonstrate the competencies from that module. Using the Skill Assessment Scale will help you to recognize the new supervisor s strengths, and also areas where your skills as a mentor will be used to guide and support the new supervisor. 5 Slide 5 - Skill Assessment Scale 2 As a Supervisor Mentor, you will be required to complete a Skill Assessment Scale for your mentee after he or she completes modules 2, 3, 4, and 5, rating his or her competencies in each area. The Skill Assessment Scales are located in your New Supervisor Mentor Program manual, and are available to both you and your mentee. In your manual, directly before each assessment scale, you will see identifiers of the specific skills and knowledge required for each rating. The scales are comprised of numbers 1 through 7, with 1 being unacceptable, 4 being acceptable, and 7 being superior. Page 5 of 9

6 Slide 6 - Supervisor Module Competencies The five new supervisor training modules are listed on your screen. Roll your mouse over each module to view the specific competencies for that module. Page 6 of 9

7 Slide 7 - How to Use the Manual The Supervisor Mentor Program for New Supervisors manual is a guidebook for you to use throughout the mentoring process. After your mentee completes a module, you will use your manual to understand the competencies he or she is expected to demonstrate. The Skill Assessment Scales provide guidance in evaluating your mentee's skill level. Use the results of the Skill Assessment Scales to understand the areas in which you will mentor the new supervisor. Page 7 of 9

8 Slide 8 - Evaluation If a new supervisor scores a rating of unacceptable using the Skill Assessment Scales, a remedial program should be developed by the new supervisor s director in consultation with the Regional Manager, to meet the specific needs of that employee utilizing their strengths. One month after your mentee completes module 5, the Local Office Director will evaluate your skills as a mentor after consulting with your mentee. This evaluation form is located in the back of your manual. Page 8 of 9
