Introduction to elearning Welcome to the guide to Using elearning for the Ramsay Training Institute. This document will show you how to access elearning packages through the Ramsay Training Institute Desktop as well as how to use them effectively. Before you begin, we d like to first talk a little about your health and safety. Ergonomics While the activities you normally undertake in your day to day job likely have a range of health and safety concerns for you, you should not forget that it is equally possible to cause yourself strain or injury merely from sitting at a desk and using a computer for extended periods of time. Working on a computer is a physical task. It may not seem strenuous or hazardous, but chronic strain and injury are a common issue for people who spend much of their working day at a desk. Many of the hazards to your health in using a computer involve strain caused by repetitious movement of your wrists, arms and shoulders. In addition, poor posture can lead to neck and back complaints and strained vision. It is vital, therefore, that you consider your posture and how you are moving in your workspace in this case, the computer workstation. Ergonomics the study of designing equipment and devices that work with the human body, its range of movement and its cognitive abilities recommends that you position yourself and your equipment in a way that ensures a healthy working environment. Here are some guidelines for achieving this healthy workspace and maintaining your comfort: Use a good chair with a dynamic (moveable) back. When you sit, sit right back in it, not on the edge. Ensure that the top of the monitor casing is around 5-8 cm above your eye level Ensure that the room you are working in is adequately lit. There should be no glare on the screen (as in from direct sunlight), and neither should the monitor be the strongest light source in the room (optical glass antiglare filters are available if you cannot change the lighting conditions of your workspace). Sit at arm s length from the monitor Place your feet on the floor or on a stable footrest. If you are working from a document, use a document holder placed preferable in line with the computer screen Your wrists should be flat and straight in relation to your forearms while typing or using the mouse (or other input device) Your arms should be relaxed and your elbows close to your body The monitor and keyboard should be centred in front of you 3
Where possible, use a negative tilt keyboard tray with an upper mouse platform or a downward tilted platform adjacent to the keyboard. Ensure your work surface is stable, and that your keyboard tray does not bounce when you type. Take frequent short breaks (micro-breaks) Depending on where you are working, you may need to take the time before each session to adjust your environment to maximise the ergonomics. Remember, it takes very little time to do this, but the benefits are long lasting. 4
Ramsay Training Institute elearning The Ramsay Training Institute (RTI) elearning environment is based on a Learning Management System (commonly referred to as an LMS) provided by Janison. This system manages all learner records, and is customisable for each student. It tracks your progress through learning modules and records your score on tests. Access and Logging in The RTI Desktop where you log in to access your elearning can be accessed the same way you would access any other website, from any computer, anywhere, at any time, as long as you are connected to the internet. Simply click on the link below or type the address into your web browser. This will take you to the log in screen. Your username and temporary password should have already been provided to you. Upon your first login you will be told that your (temporary) password has expired, and will be prompted to change your password. Once you change your password only you will know it, so it s important to remember it. If you do not have a username, speak to your supervisor or the training co-ordinator in your area. 5
Orientation Your elearning Home Page Once you have logged in, your elearning Home Page will be displayed. Let s look at that now. 1. Logon Details Logon Details gives you information about your status on the system: current logon details. It is important that you do not share your login details with anyone else as this is your own private training record. 2. Learn Menu The Learn menu gives you information about your elearning activities. Roll your mouse over the menu name to see the drop-down menu Your Message Centre and Your Course. Click on a menu item to view the information. 3. Your Study Groups These are your assigned courses / assessments to access. Most courses will be a single module in their own right however large courses like the MEDITECH elearning course, will have a number of modules under the course name shown here. 4. Common Tasks These are your self adminstration items that allow you to update details, including , password and other personal details. 5. Your courses This is where each individual course or test is shown, along with information about whether you have started it, when you last accessed it, and whether it has been completed. 6
6. Log Off If you have finished your elearning session, or you want to exit the Desktop for any reason, click the X in the top right hand corner of the window to close. There is no formal log off process as shown in some other images in this document. 7
Opening and working on elearning modules When you select a module (click on it) from your Study Group, it will launch (open) in a new browser window. Most of the modules in the LMS are based on Adobe Flash technology. This technology enables us to design elearning modules from the ground up for a more interactive learning experience that includes animation, interaction, sound and even video. Technical requirements You will need to enable audio on your PC to complete some modules. This can normally be accessed via the Speaker icon in the bottom right hand corner of your operating system Task bar. (Note: you may have to expand this area to see the icon). You will also need to ensure that you have the latest Adobe Flash Player installed on your machine. This is FREE and can be downloaded and installed from: 8
Progressing through the module Once the module is open, you can commence working through it. Here are some of the major features of all elearning modules. Navigation can usually be found in the bottom right or right and left corners. These buttons (usually Next and Back) allow you to progress through the screens in the module. Interactions are complex activities on a single screen. They will come with their own unique instruction, and often you will not be able to progress to the next screen until you have completed the activity Assessment questions will appear frequently throughout the module. You are allowed 3 attempts to complete an assessment question correctly. After the third attempt the correct answer will be displayed. You cannot progress to the next screen until you have completed an Assessment question correctly or attempted it 3 times. To complete a module successfully, you: Must work from the beginning to the end. Must complete the tasks before you can move on. If the Next button is greyed out, you have not completed a task on that page. Complete the task then move to the next page. Move from page to page by clicking the Next or Back button. 9
Conclusion Remember, Ramsay elearning is provided to you as a valued resource for your training at Ramsay Health Care. If you have any questions or suggestions regarding your elearning, contact your local site representative. 10
Technical support We will make every effort to support your participation in the elearning program. To ensure we make improvements along the way we need to hear about any issues you may have. If you have any problems or questions, the first mechanism for support is . We will try to respond to all s within 24 hours. Please any elearning questions to Support issue: I can t log in Your username and password are different from those you use when you start a Ramsay Healthcare computer or when you log in to Meditech or People Connect. If you are unable to: Log on to the RTI Desktop, OR If you have successfully logged in but have no courses in your Study Group (as shown in the next section) Please send an to the RTI elearning support address ([email protected]) with your: 1. First name 2. Last name 3. Username 4. Password, and 5. Hospital location (e.g. Joondalup or Linacre) 6. Brief description of your problem NOTE: It is important that you DO NOT contact the normal MIS/IT helpdesk if you have a problem with the elearning system as they will not be able to directly assist you with your enquiry. 11
