1 Student Academic Achievement Committee (SAAC) Standardized Report Form INTRODUCTION Program/Discipline Title: Nursing Programs: Associate of Science Nursing Time Period: Fall 2009 to summer 2010 Program goals, objectives, and/or mission: The purpose of the Nursing Programs at is to offer highquality basic nursing education that meets the requirements for an associate degree in nursing. In addition, the programs support educational mobility in nursing by providing a mechanism to assess and grant recognition for previously acquired nursing knowledge. The programs provide qualified graduates to meet the community s need for nurses. The programs foster personal, intellectual and social growth of students. 1

2 Exit Competencies: 1. Utilize critical thinking skills to apply the comprehensive nursing process when meeting the healthcare needs of clients with complex health problems. 2. Provide a safe and caring environment for clients across the lifespan, recognizing the influence of spirituality and cultural diversity. 3. Communicate effectively through oral, written and technological means to manage care through interdisciplinary collaboration to meet client health needs. 4. Demonstrate accountability for maintaining professional competence as an ASN graduate based on evidence based nursing practice. Core Competencies: 2

3 Results Introduction and discussion of assessment efforts: HESI Assessment tests are completed by students after each clinical course. Students are encouraged to score at or above an 850. Students scoring below that threshold are provided with remediation tools (most from HESI) and encouraged to take a second version of the tests.. Graduate Surveys. Employee Surveys. Licensure examination (NCLEX) results are collected by the New Mexico Board of Nursing and reported to CNM.. Alumni surveys are mailed to students six months after graduation. Assessment Plan (Who, what, when, and how assessment took place): 1. Students are assessed throughout the nursing programs using the HESI testing products. 2. Graduating students must take the HESI Exit (E2) test and achieve a score at or greater than 850 (the score determined by HESI as a predictor of NCLEX success). 3. Graduate Surveys are administered on the last day of classes to students who have successfully completed the programs. These surveys are confidential. 4. Alumni surveys are mailed to students six months after graduation. 5. Employee Surveys are sent to area healthcare facilities in order to track stakeholder satisfaction with our graduates. 6. Licensure examination (NCLEX) results are collected by the New Mexico Board of Nursing and reported to CNM. 3

4 Exit Competency Results: Students are evaluated at the end of each clinical course for progression toward there attainment of exit competencies. At graduation all students meet the exit competencies. HESI Exit (E2) Exam: The RN E2 test is marketed as an exam that predicts NCLEX pass rates. The test provides immediate feedback to students and faculty which includes individualized diagnostic results, and prescribed reading assignments as remediation. All ASN graduates were able to complete the E2 exam. Scores for these three terms were low. The students, to date, have not been required to pass the E2 at any particular level. We are currently discussing how to proceed as a faculty to address low HESI scores and NCLEX pass rates. Graduate Survey: Graduating students from the school year were asked and completed the graduate survey. Results were returned. are un available due to technical problems downloading data. 4. NCLEX pass rates are reported to CNM as a bulk report from January 1-December 31, 2009 and January 1-April The ASN graduates data isnoted below: Core Competency Results: No data available Discussion of changes in support of student learning for PAST year based on your assessment results: 4

5 Discussion of proposed changes in support of student learning for COMING year based upon your assessment results: NCLEX pass scores in both ASN and BSN programs nationally are dropping. Our school continued to mirror that trend. From October 2008 to March of 2009, our NCLEX pass rate was 83%, which was up from the previous year of 81%. This is slightly below a national average of 86.2% for the same reporting period. We continue to use the HESI testing packages from the Evolve company. We experienced several major problems in implementation that prevented collecting assessment data of level 1 and2. Some of the problems included: not receiving test codes on schedule, technical difficulties at the Evolve website, delayed remediation availability and tracking problems, and challenges associated with our limited computer testing resources. Students MUST take the HESI tests in a proctored environment. Discussion of proposed changes in support of student learning for COMING year based upon your assessment results: We are still evaluating the HESI results. An area that improvement is needed is in identify areas where changes in the program need to be made. the utilization of the data to The program is completing the creation of an updated systematic plan of evaluation. This is to be in compliance with the NLNAC (accreditation body). This will also assist the program to continue to improve the quality of the nursing program.
