3 Unit 1: Steps and Procedures in Obtaining a Driver s License 1 Why Is This Unit Important? The importance of this unit (Chapters 1 and 2) is to inform the students of all of the steps and procedures they need to complete in order to obtain a New Jersey General Driver s License (GDL) student permit, driver s license, and a basic driver s license. These chapters will describe the process to pass the knowledge test, pass the vision test, obtain a GDL permit, pass the road test, demonstrate six points of identification, obtain a GDL license and, after one year of restricted driving, obtain a basic and unrestricted license. Students will be informed of all the ways they can either pass these tests and they will know all of the reasons for rejection by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC). Students will also be introduced to the new Enhanced Digital Driver License (EDDL) which first came into being in Enduring Understandings: 1. Students will gain understanding of the age requirements for obtaining student permit, provisional license and basic license. 2. Students will understand the requirements for the MVC six points of identification. 3. Students will gain an understanding of the requirements necessary of them for the basic road test and the reasons for rejection. Essential Questions: 1. What are the requirements and restrictions associated with obtaining the different types of licenses? 2. What documents can be considered primary and secondary forms of identification and what are the point values associated with each? 3. What are the three progressions to obtaining a license in the state of New Jersey? 4. What driving actions may you be asked to complete at the road test and what may cause you to fail the road test? 5 Unit 2: Responsibilities in Operating a Motor Vehicle 3 Why Is This Unit Important? The importance of this unit (Chapter 3) is to inform the students of the responsibilities with which they will have to deal when they are operating a motor vehicle in New Jersey. This chapter deals with all of the safety functions in the vehicle to protect them during an accident, as well as all the car conditions that need to be functioning properly when driving. Enduring Understandings: 1. Students will gain an understanding of New Jersey seatbelt law, child restraints and airbags. 2. Students will learn about general car conditions and will know what must work properly when operating a vehicle on New Jersey roadways. 3. Students will also learn the basic skills for operating a motor vehicle. 4. Students will also learn the basic skills for parking a motor vehicle. Essential Questions: 1. Why is there an age and weight limit for a child restraint system and what are the limits? 2. Why does NJ have a seatbelt law and what does it state? 3. Explain the process of entering and starting a car. 4. Why do you check the inside and outside of the motor vehicle? 5. Explain how you position your mirrors to make your blind spot as small as possible. 6. Explain the proper way to hold the steering wheel and why it is the proper hand position. 7. How do you turn using the hand-over-hand method? 8. What are the three hand signals and explain when they would be used? 7 Unit 3: Safe Driving Rules, Regulations and Defensive Driving Techniques 5 Why Is This Unit Important? The importance of this unit (Chapters 4 and 5) is to inform the students of safe driving rules, regulations and defensive driving techniques. The information in this unit will help the students to understand how to operate a motor vehicle safely and minimize their chances of being involved in a motor vehicle collision. The concepts in this unit deal with everyday driving tasks and will provide a knowledge base so that the students can share the road safely with other vehicles. Enduring Understandings: 1. Students will gain an understanding of safe driving rules and regulations including the use of cell phones, right of way, speed limits, highways and headlights. 2. Students will gain an understanding of defensive driving; including the Smith system, SIPDE collision prevention formula. 3. Students will learn what to do when they are involved in an accident. Essential Questions: 1. Why are there different speed limits in New Jersey and what are they? 2. Who must you yield right of way to? 3. How do you enter and exit a highway? 4. What is the New Jersey headlight law? 5. What are the laws pertaining to the New Jersey cell phone usage? 6. How do the defensive driving tactics of the Smith System and SIPDE relate to driving safely? 7. What are the three parts of the collision prevention formula? 8. How can you prevent road rage? 9. 10 Unit 4: Effects of Drugs and Alcohol on Drivers 8 Why Is This Unit Important? The importance of this unit (Chapters 6 and 7) is to inform the students of the effect drugs and alcohol can have on an individual who is driving. Also, this unit will discuss the privileges of driving and the penalties that will be imposed when certain laws are broken. Enduring Understandings: 1. Students will gain an understanding of drinking, drugs and the effects they have on the driving task. Students will learn about the HERO campaign, how much is too much, and the good host. 2. Students will gain an understanding of the driver privileges and the penalties. 3. Students will learn about the point system, moving violations and the consequences of driving under the influence and other motor vehicle infractions. Essential Questions: 1. How does the consumption of alcohol impact your ability to drive a car safely? 2. What becomes impaired after 2-4 drinks? 3. What are the four factors that will impact your Blood Alcohol Content (BAC)? 4. What are the Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) limits for a driver under the age of 21 and over the age of 21? 5. What is the HERO campaign? 6. How can you be a good host and prevent drinking and driving? 7. Why is driving a privilege? 8. What is the implied consent law? 9. What is the penalty for refusing to take a breathalyzer test? 10. How does the NJ point system work? 11. What are the penalties associated with a Driving Under the Influence (DUI) charge? 12. 12 Unit 5: Sharing the Road With Others 10 Why Is This Unit Important? The importance of this unit (Chapters 8, 9 and 10) is to inform the students of how to share the road with others, including motorcycles, trucks, buses, pedestrians, bicyclists and animals. This unit will also discuss all of the official procedures to buying, selling, registering, titling and insuring a new and/or used vehicle. Enduring Understandings: 1. Students will gain an understanding of how to share the road with other motor vehicles, pedestrians, animals and low speed vehicles. Students will also learn about tractor-trailers, buses and no-zone principle. 2. Students will review general vehicle information and essential driver information. 3. Students will also gain understanding of how to title, register and insure a vehicle. Essential Questions: 1. What is the New Jersey state law regarding motor vehicles and pedestrians? 2. What are the no-zones? 3. What do you need be aware of when sharing the road with other motor vehicles? 4. How often does a vehicle need to be inspected and what are some ways to fail? 5. The importance of the organ donation unit is to inform the students of how the organ donation process works and how they can become an organ donor. Students will understand what organs are able to be donated and how it can help to save or improve another person s life. Enduring Understandings: 1. Students will gain an appreciation of the High School Heroes Donate Life Act. 2. Students will be presented both sides of the issue, the donor s side and the recipient s side. Essential Questions: 1. What is the High School Heroes Donate Life Act? 2. What are the benefits of organ and tissue donation? 3. What are some common myths about organ donation? 4.
