3 MATHEMATICS DEGREE MODULES MMath Master of Mathematics G103 MMath Master of Mathematics with a Year Abroad G10A This prestigious four-year MMath Master of Mathematics programme provides greater depth of study than on a threeyear course. The first three years broadly follow the BSc programme, while the final year allows more advanced study of specialist topics. A special feature is a research-led, individually supervised project in the fourth year, which is excellent preparation for a career in research, either in industry or in a university. BSc Mathematics G100 BSc Mathematics with a Year in Industry G10N You will establish a strong foundation in a wide range of maths topics up to the forefront of pure and applied mathematics and statistics. You will be able to tailor your studies according to your interests and have the opportunity to complete an individually supervised project. The project is an opportunity to develop key employability skills with independent, self-directed study and research. 4 FIND OUR FULL MODULE LISTING AT BSc Mathematics with a Foundation Year G10F This programme provides an exceptional opportunity to study for a mathematics degree for students who do not necessarily have our traditional entry requirements. Students successfully completing the foundation year progress onto the first year of one of our main degree programmes. She went on to work for one of the world s largest professional services firms, PwC, where she passed all of her professional ACA accounting examinations and looked to take advantage of the company s opportunities to work abroad. Here she tells us why she chose UEA. Most importantly I was drawn to the outstanding quality and ratings the University was well known for, especially in the subject of mathematics. After visiting the department on an open day, I was engaged by the insight provided and liked the feel of the small yet friendly mathematics department. 5 FULFILLING YOUR POTENTIAL For me studying fluids in the second year inspired me and my dream of working with a Formula One team on aerodynamics. I enjoy the flexibility to tailor my degree as the programme progresses from the wide range of optional modules. It was the enthusiasm of the lecturers that convinced me to come to UEA. 6 FIND OUT MORE AT YOUR OPTIONS Enhance your studies with a year abroad Choose our MMath programme and you ll have the chance for a once-in-a lifetime opportunity to spend a year in North America or Australia. During your year abroad you will study exciting branches of mathematics with a different set of lecturers whilst gaining experience of living in a different culture. Most students also take the opportunity to travel during the University vacations, making this an exciting alternative to a gap year. This experience is highly valued by employers because it encourages qualities, such as adaptability, resourcefulness and independence. Get a head start with a year in industry Gain real-world experience on our BSc with a Year in Industry. You will develop your skills and expertise in a professional setting giving yourself an edge with employers in your chosen field during your third year. You will maintain close contact with your UEA mentor and be supported by an industrial supervisor to ensure you get the most out of the opportunity. Tailor your degree The first year introduces you to all areas of mathematics, enabling you to go on to tailor the rest of your degree according to your personal interests. Your academic adviser s expert guidance will ensure you construct a degree profile employers will find attractive. Whatever your range of mathematical interests, there is also the option of a BSc project. This gives you the opportunity to study one topic in more depth and demonstrate your understanding through a written report and a poster or presentation.

8 Landmine detection isn t easy. Everything from rubbish to rabbits can cause a false alarm. Mathematics PhD student John Schofield has been working on algorithms to make clearing minefields safer. HOW WILL YOU CLEAN UP? This collaboration with industry married mathematics with humanitarian aid through landmines. Red herrings like metal debris can seriously hinder landmine detectors, but John was able to develop a scattering algorithm that could increase accuracy and potentially save lives. The research fits with our aim to address the important questions that scientists face. UEA established the Centre for Interdisciplinary Mathematical Research, where mathematicians work with a huge range of academics to provide creative answers to extraordinary questions from problems in engineering and biology to new ways of understanding climate change.
