Ross BSc Accounting and Management 2010 Why study management at Bristol? To be effective in management, you must understand the economic, political and social environments in which businesses operate. Our courses will help you to develop the analytical and critical skills necessary to succeed as managers in careers across all sectors. You will gain a sound foundation in management, and also in economics, accounting and finance, relevant areas of mathematics and the social sciences, helping you to develop a complete understanding of the practice of management. We offer three exciting combined degrees: BSc Social Policy with Management, LN42 This course combines social policy as a major subject with key elements of the academic study of management, in recognition of the fact that many of our social policy graduates go on to work in management roles within public and independent sector organisations. BSc Childhood Studies with Management, L524 This combination provides a strong grounding in the skills needed to be effective leaders in business management and service delivery, especially within the field of children s services. Our School of Economics, Finance and Management is small enough to offer strong student support, yet big enough to provide an international experience. Teaching is co-ordinated at school level, which means you have considerable choice in your combination of subjects and can engage with students from other disciplines.

3 What will I study? Single Honours courses BSc Accounting and Management, BSc Economics and Management, BSc International Business Management, BSc Management, BSc Management with Study Abroad, four years (entry by transfer) BSc Management with Study in Continental Europe, four years MSci Management with Innovation, four years In each year, you will study six subjects, comprising core units and options: NN42 LN12 N120 N200 4H56 TBC Year one Core units All students on our management degrees take Organisation Theory, and Mathematical and Statistical Methods 1. You will also study core units relevant to your chosen degree, for example: Fundamentals of Accounting and Finance 1 (for BSc Accounting and Management); Economic Principles 1 (for BSc Economics and Management); Global Business Environment (for BSc International Business Management); and French/German/Italian/Spanish for General Purposes (for BSc Management with Study in Continental Europe). Options A variety of options is available, such as Globalisation and Development. Year two Core units All students on our management degrees take Analysis in Management as a core unit during their second year. You will also study core units relevant to your chosen degree, for example: Management Accounting (for BSc Accounting and Management); Applied Quantitative Research Methods (for BSc Economics and Management); International Business Management (for the degree of the same name); Management Science (for BSc Management); and French/German/Italian/Spanish for Specific Purposes (for BSc Management with Study in Continental Europe). Options You can choose subjects from within the School of Economics, Finance and Management, or elsewhere in the University, including: Introduction to Public Management Foundations of Business Law. Year three For BSc Management, the final-year core units are: The Practice of Management Management dissertation. The Practice of Management brings together rigorous analysis and critical thinking in an applied environment. This unit helps you to develop negotiation, interview, presentation and teamwork skills, and knowledge in such areas as market development, strategy, human resource management and ethics. BSc International Business Management has three core units in the final year the two shown above, plus International Human Resource Management. You will also choose options from a list which includes the ones shown to the left. For BSc Accounting and Management, and BSc Economics and Management, there are no compulsory units in the final year. Instead, you can choose from a wide range of optional units across the school. Teaching methods You will be taught by staff from a variety of backgrounds, using a blend of social science and professional/technical approaches. We have a long-established tradition of small-group teaching and are committed to keeping tutorials as a distinctive feature of the way we teach. This means that for each of the six units you take each year, you will almost always have a weekly small-group tutorial, with up to 15 students. This gives you the chance for real interaction with staff and other students. Your lecturers and tutors will have at least two office hours each week time when they are available for you to drop in without an appointment to discuss aspects of the course. Assessment and feedback You will prepare assignments throughout the academic year, and we will give you feedback. The purpose of this is to help your learning these results won t count towards your final degree result. The management dissertation is an individual research project which will count towards your final degree. Each unit is usually assessed with a single three-hour examination at the end of the semester in which it is taught. That result contributes to your final degree award. Some units also include a coursework element that counts towards your final mark.

4 What are my career prospects? Within six months of graduation, 88 per cent of our students secure a graduate job or place on a Master s degree a higher proportion than from any other UK university (Guardian University Guide 2014, Business and Management Studies category). The technical and critical skills we teach are highly valued by prestigious employers, who run events for our students here at Bristol during enhancement weeks, such as sessions on succeeding in an interview and developing commercial awareness.
