2 What What is Computer CS is NOT Science? It is not ICT as taught in schools It is not about populating databases, using spreadsheets or creating attractive documents (all of these activities may, on occasion, be carried out by computer scientists)

3 So, don t ask a computer scientist Inappropriate questions to ask a computer scientist: Can you fix my computer? What is the best laptop to buy? How do I create a drop-shadow effect in Word? Why don t you know any of these things? (but they might still know the answer)

4 What CS is What it is possible to do with computers Making computers fast and powerful Enabling computers to deal with complex problems Can be theoretical, e.g. reasoning about the behaviour of programs Much of it is also practical

5 Why is CS so important? For one thing, computers are everywhere! Around your home (in your TV, your DVD player, your boiler, your Hi-Fi, your alarm system) In your car On you (mobile phone, calculator, MP3 player) The computer chip embedded in your credit card is more powerful than those used on board Apollo 11!!

6 Some questions we try to answer How do we tell computers precisely what we want them to do? Should we trust computers? Can we always guarantee they ll get it right? Can we make computers intelligent? How can we model complex systems such as the weather, the economy, biological processes? How can we get computers to communicate with each other? What are the limits of computing power?

Qualification A-Level International Baccalaureate BTEC National Extended Diploma Access All Courses (BEng/ MEng) ABB including Maths and a Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Electronics or Design & Technology: Systems) (excluding General Studies) Pass International Baccalaureate with 33 overall, including 5 at Higher Level Maths (and a Science) and Standard Level English B grade 5 Achieve D*DD overall in BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma QCF including Distinction in Level 3 Further Mathematics for Technicians. Pass Access Programme with Distinctions in at least 42 credits of level 3 units including 15 credits in Level 3 Further Mathematics. BTEC National Award and two A-levels BB at A-level Maths (and a Science excluding General Studies) plus Distinction in BTEC National Award BTEC Subsidiary Diploma and two A-levels BB at A-level Maths (and a Science excluding General Studies) plus Distinction in BTEC Subsidiary Diploma OCR Level 3 National Certificate and two A-levels (OCR Level 2 National Award must have been taken in previous year) BB at A-level Maths (and a Science excluding General Studies) plus Distinction in OCR National Certificate Diploma Engineering Advanced Diploma grades BB and with grade A in A-level Mathematics as specialist learning or alternatively grade A in OCR Level 3 Certificate in Mathematics for Engineering For those applicants that may not be able to achieve these grades, an alternative, Foundation Year route to entry is offered (H109). This is an additional year of study at Carmel College in St.Helens, where student s Maths and Physics is brought up to the required standard. Applicants who have already taken Maths and Physics A-level require a minimum of CDD, whilst those without these A- levels require CCC as a minimum. Students that pass their Foundation Year (a 50% overall exam average is required) qualify for entry to Year 1 of the Engineering degree programme of their choice.
