1 Unit Focus: Students will learn correct keyboarding and web based navigation skills to assist them with taking the Smarter Balanced assessments (e.g., practice test, field test). Students will know Proper ergonomics and posture for keyboarding Letters and number key on computer keyboard Space bar, shift key, return/enter keys Web based technology vocabulary such as drag and drop, scroll, field, drop down menu, icons, minimize, maximize, etc. Students will be skilled at (Students can do) Use of proper posture and ergonomics when using the computer Locating and using the home row on the keyboard Locating and using letter and number keys with correct left and right hand placement Locating and using correct finger and hand for space bar, return/enter and shift keys Web based navigation skills Before beginning student lessons, teacher will Review basic Tablet operations (e.g., powering on, using the touch pad) Review keyboarding lessons o Go to lang.org o Review keyboarding guidelines, lessons, tutorials, and games Review Smarter Balanced Practice Test items o Click on Secure Browser if downloaded on your computer, otherwise go to 1
2 Lesson 1 1. Review basic Tablet operations including proper use of headphones 2. Review proper keyboarding techniques a. Use two hands to type b. Your right hand goes on the right side of the keyboard and your left hand goes on the left side c. Put your right hand on J K L ; and your left hand on F D S A. This is the home row d. The bumps of the J and F keys should be under your index fingers e. Curve your fingers f. Keep your wrists straight, not bent down or resting on the desk g. Sit up straight h. Put your feet flat on the floor i. Look straight ahead at the screen, not your hands j. Keep your fingers close to the keyboard 3. Launch keyboarding program a. Assess students keyboarding skills and adjust lessons as necessary 4. Log out of Keyboarding program Lesson 2 1. Review basic Tablet operations including proper use of headphones 2. Teacher demonstrates how to log into the SB Practice Test website while students observe using the GUEST login c. Show how to navigate through the various screens i. Guest logins ii. Choose the grade level and click Yes iii. Select Math iv. On the next screen click Yes, Start My Test d. Inform students that they will have to login with their own IDs during the actual test e. Teach students the significance of the various icons in the SB assessments i. Zoom In and Zoom Out is to make the screen larger ii. Save button allows you to save the information for the question iii. Pause allows you to take a short break iv. Back and Next buttons move to the previous or next question 3
4 Lesson 3 v. Information: Clicking it will open a window with additional help for the student by providing an interactive model showing how to navigate the question and technology skills required to answer the question vi. Notepad: Clicking it will open a digital notepad where students can write notes and save them vii. Flag: Clicking this icon will place a marker on the question reminding students to come back later and finish it. 1. Keyboarding a. Practice keyboarding skills to improve accuracy and speed in typing. Students progress at their own pace based on their performance. 2. SB Navigation Skills (Part 1 focuses on the first set of questions in the Practice Test) a. Students log into SB Practice Test b. Review how to navigate through the login sections i. GUEST logins ii. On the next screen choose their grade level and click Yes iii. Select Math and grade level iv. On the next screen click Yes, Start My Test v. Remind students that they will use their own IDs during the actual test c. Focus on specific math assessment navigation skills related to grade level. These will be the skills addressed in the second set of questions for each grade level listed below. 6 th (13 practice items) Click, Drag and Drop Point and line tools (delete) Select (click) SB Number Pad Text field 7 th (12 practice items) Click in box Drag and Drop Select 8 th (8 practice items) Draw lines and shapes Delete object SB Number Pad Test Field insert cursor, delete, highlight Drag and Drop d. Focus on how to read the questions and respond (e.g., choosing multiple responses to a single question) 4
5 Lesson 4 e. Teach students how to fix their errors before submitting responses by deleting, unchecking, and using buttons on the screen to undo. f. Go through each question for your grade level (see end of lesson) and teach the students how to use the tools to answer the questions. i. Drag and Drop requires that the numbers/shapes in the question need to be moved into the accurate place or line. ii. Number pads are used to input answers into the text field. Some number pads have equation symbols whereas some questions have number pads without equation symbols. The arrows can be used to navigate the numbers in the text field. The Undo and Redo arrows are used to revise answers, and the Delete button removes the answers. Teach them the SB math icons and tools. 1. Keyboarding a. Practice keyboarding skills to improve accuracy and speed in typing. Students progress at their own pace based on their performance. 2. SB Navigation Skills (Part 2 focuses on the next set of questions in the Practice Test) a. Students log in to SB practice test using GUEST login b. Focus on specific math assessment navigation skills related to grade level. These will be the skills addressed in the second set of questions for each grade level listed below. c. In order to get to the last set of questions, students need to select any answer on the test and type a couple of words in text fields. Since these are GUEST logins in the practice tests, these scores do not count. d. Go over each item with the students and ask them about the tech skills required to answer the question. 6 th (6 practice items) Equation tool Radio button Point tool Select by clicking in a box 7 th (9 practice items) Checkbox more than 1 Line tool Calculations and symbols Radio button 8 th (17 practice items) Radio button Arrow tool Text field Multiple checkboxes 5
6 Lesson 5 e. Teach students how to fix their errors before submitting responses by deleting, unchecking, and using buttons on the screen to undo. i. Number pads are used to input answers into the text field. Some number pads have equation symbols whereas some questions have number pads without equation symbols. The arrows can be used to navigate the numbers in the text field. The Undo and Redo arrows are used to revise answers, and the Delete button removes the answers. Teach them the SB math icons and tools. ii. Click the delete button and click on the object you want to remove iii. Add Point button is used to create points on the graph or field as a place to start a line iv. Add Arrow creates an arrow at the end of a line to indicate direction v. When you reach the end of the test, click on the End Test icon to submit your answers. It will allow you the option to review your answers. f. Have the students End Test and exit from the browser g. Review skills they used to navigate through the assessment. Ask them to share what worked for them and what areas are challenging h. Log out of computers 1. Keyboarding a. Students will need headphones for this lesson; therefore, check volume of computer before logging into SB practice test b. Students log into SB Practice Test c. Model how to navigate through the login sections i. GUEST logins ii. On the next screen choose their grade level and click Yes iii. Select ELA and grade level iv. On the next screen click Yes, Start My Test d. Tell them they will have to login with their own IDs during the actual test e. Review SB navigation icons with the students 6
7 f. Instruct students on how to and why use the Expand Stimulus icon g. These will be the skills addressed in the first set of questions for each grade level listed below. h. Go over each item with the students and discuss the tech skills required to answer each question i. Focus on how to read the questions and respond accordingly j. Teach students how to fix their errors before submitting responses by deleting, unchecking, and using buttons on the screen to undo Clicking options. Other choices: i.
