You can also login directly at Course documents available on Canvas will include syllabus, lecture pdfs and videos, submission drop boxes, supplementary study materials and detailed assignment information. You will need a reliable internet connection to access this essential course material. Prereqs ENGL 098, MATH 098 with grade of C or higher or placement into ENGL& 101; and CHEM& 121, or CHEM& 161 and CHEM& 162, with a grade of C or higher. Course description: This course covers the science of cellular biology, and how this applies to organisms. Topics covered include cellular and molecular biology, genetics, evolution, biochemistry, and metabolism. This class is oriented towards students majoring in nursing, dental hygiene, radiology, physical therapy, chiropractic or similar/related career path. CAUTION: Lecture and lab attendance is MANDATORY. Missing lecture or lab will result in loss of points. Missing two or more labs will result in automatic failure regardless of overall performance in this course. PAGE 1 OF 9

2 How to succeed in this course Attend all class sessions. There are unannounced, graded in class activities; you must be present to receive these points. The in class labs are also mandatory. NOTE: missing 2 or more labs without prior arrangement can result in failure of the course regardless of your overall standing. Arrive promptly. Assignments due in class are not accepted late. Exams are also based on class material, so missing class time puts you at a significant disadvantage when studying for tests. Set aside enough time. As a MINIMUM budget 2-3 hours for each hour of class time. (12-18 hours study time per week). If you struggle when learning new material, or if it has been a long time since your last college level class and your study skills are rusty, or if science is not your strong suit, YOU MAY NEED MORE TIME. Be realistic; don t overload yourself with other obligations this quarter. Study efficiently. Do you learn best from flash cards, study groups, concept maps, videos, reviewing audio of the lecture or chapter outlines? Know yourself, and be open to trying new techniques. Ask questions. Ask in class, in the online discussion board or by ing me. Explain what you understand to me or a study partner to double check your knowledge and solidify your understanding. Get help. If you are struggling with content, unsure about instructions, or need to discuss logistics, I am here for you. me or make an appointment to discuss your concerns. Do it early and often. Don t get overwhelmed. Study time can be divided into 20 minute sessions with breaks. Break up longer assignments into sections; do one and finish it, celebrate the achievement and then move on. Pay attention. Put away your cell phone. You may use your lap top ONLY if it is part of your study tools. Playing games, checking or texting in class is rude and distracting. If your behavior detracts from your peers ability to learn or mine to teach, you will be asked to leave for the day. Stay on schedule. Keep up on your readings and begin assignments well ahead of due dates. DO NOT FALL BEHIND. We cover a lot of material in this course; if you fall behind it is very hard to catch up. PAGE 2 OF 9

RARE exceptions may be made for extreme hardship but only with prior arrangement and at the sole discretion of the instructor. Extra credit There may be unannounced extra credit activities throughout the quarter; if available they will be offered to the entire class. There are NO individual extra credit opportunities. Grading questions You have 2 weeks from the time a quiz, exam or assignment is returned to point out grading errors or ask questions. You must submit the original work (for online exams or quizzes, you must copy and paste the original question into your resubmission) with a written explanation of your concern. No exceptions! Regraded assignments, exams, etc. will be examined and returned within 2 weeks of the resubmission date. PAGE 3 OF 9

4 Contacting the instructor Use the Class Questions discussion board for general, non- grade related or non- personal questions. This public forum allows all students to benefit; if you know the answer to someone s posted question, you are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to post your answer. I will not answer every question but will moniter the forum closely and make corrections as needed. For questions of a personal nature (ie about specific grades, personal circumstances, etc) contact me through Canvas or hkemp@everettcc.edu will be answered within 48 hours. Student conduct and expectations In class exams and quizzes - must be completed on your own with no notes, or access to electronic devices. I advise that you come on time; if you are late you will have less time to complete the test. Submitted assignments and due dates assignments can be discussed with other students but the content must be written in your own words. Any other guidelines provided must be followed for full credit. Assignments are due in class by 5:15pm on the due date or as specified for work submitted to online dropboxes. One late assignment is permitted without penalty during the quarter. Subsequent late assignments will be docked 20% per day. Exception: late prelabs will receive 0. In class activities details will be given in class; you must be present to receive these points. About cheating and plagiarism cheating of any kind will not be tolerated; at the LEAST you will receive a zero on the assignment and there may be much more serious consequences. Copying other students or sources word for word without acknowledging the source ie plagiarizing - is a form of cheating. Classroom conduct be respectful and considerate. Discrimination, harassment, and disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. If you experience something that makes the class uncomfortable for you, talk to me immediately. NOTE: If your discomfort arises due to a conflict between course content and personal beliefs I advise you to discuss your concerns with the administration. You are expected to use the CANVAS website materials required for this course are posted online; much of this content is ONLY AVAILABLE online. 5 Course objectives. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: Observe, measure, record and analyze data using standard scientific instrumentation and methods. Critically apply course concepts to the laboratory setting. Report on experimental results in standard scientific format. Describe the chemical composition of living systems; recognize the 4 types of macromolecules in cells. Discuss enzymes and their structural and functional properties Discuss energy exchange and use and in particular describe aerobic respiration and photosynthesis. Use basic principles of genetics to solve genetics problems. Describe the processes of DNA replication, transcription and translation. List the phases of mitosis and meiosis and describe the major events in each phase. List the parts of the cell and describe the function of each. Describe the structure and function of biological membranes. Describe selected current applications of biotechnology and molecular biology. Describe the evolutionary basis of biology. Core learning outcomes. In this course, students will be assessed for ability to: Engage and take responsibility as active learners students will participate in hands- on laboratory projects that involve designing experiments to learn about biological processes. Think critically students will apply scientific methodology to evaluate, discuss and reach conclusions regarding assigned experiments, projects and activities. Communicate effectively students will communicate the results of their lab experiments and written and oral presentations. Demonstrate computer and technology proficiency students will use software to simulate biological processes and/or use data- loggin sensors to send experimental data to computers for graphing and analysis. Provide documentation of your disability to the Center for Disability Services (Parks 267 near the bookstore). About your instructor: I have a PhD in Molecular Biology and a BSc in Genetics. Since 1994 I have conducted genetic and biochemical research on a variety of model systems, from single- celled yeasts to worms, flies and fish. I study how cells communicate with each other and what they do with that information - whether in the context of a single- celled microbe finding a mating partner or as part of the complex embryonic events that allow a single fertilized egg to develop into a multi- celled animal.
