What am I doing? This information is in the staff booklet sent out by last week or you can follow this link to the website where all documents are located: IN BRIEF: As of midday on Sunday 12 th January, there are 73 businesses/individuals visiting Hinchingbrooke to deliver interactive sessions to the students. Every student will experience 2 two hour sessions in the morning. In the afternoon they will continue to work in vertical groups (mixed age ranges from Years 8-13) the afternoon session will be run by ALL teaching staff. Groups will be around and the session has been planned for you. All groupings will be released on Monday 13 th January.
What sessions am I doing? This information is in the locations document sent out by Paddy Winter on Thursday 9 th January. It details the industry strand, the title of the session, which member of the teaching staff is supporting that session and where that session will be located on the school site. The document also lists where the Year 7 Directorate Days will be running and which members of staff are leading these from the four Directorates. As was made clear in the that sent out the locations, it was subject to changes which have since been made. I am sure you can appreciate the challenge of placing our visitors in suitable spaces, especially when some of them are bringing racing car simulators on site! The latest (and, we hope, final) locations document will be sent out via on Monday 13 th January please check it especially as we have given staff two different sessions for the morning so that you can also enjoy some range and interest. Alternatively, you can follow this link to find the latest document:
What do I do in the morning sessions? You are in the classroom both to ensure that Child Protection procedures are followed and also to provide support for our visitors. At the start of each session, please use the paper register which your visitor will have been given to check all students are there. This register will be collected during your session so that we can check any absences. Many of our visitors have been in regular contact with us to ensure that they provide interesting, interactive and suitable sessions for the students. Please, therefore, be hands on and help students to engage with the ideas and challenges of each task. We believe that we have managed to deliver lots of exciting sessions for the students to choose from which should be a form of behaviour management in itself (as it was in September). However, if there are any behaviour problems then please be proactive in quietly challenging students and supporting our visitors. If, in a minority of cases, behaviour issues present themselves which mean a student must be removed from the session, there is a policy created for the day more information on this can be found under the question What if there are behaviour issues?
Where am I?
What am I delivering to students on Tuesday afternoon? This information can be found in the whole staff guidance document which was sent out by last week. Alternatively, please use this link which will take you to the document and all the resources on the PD Day pages on the website: IN BRIEF: Students will be using this session time to reflect on what they experienced during their two morning sessions as well as exploring career entry requirements, personality types, fun career games and considering their aspirations and next steps. There is a powerpoint to accompany the session which should be fairly self explanatory but we will also send out a suggested lesson plan and timings to help your preparation. Please feel free to adapt the session where you think it is necessary. One feature of the afternoon session is the need for technology as a lot of very good resources are online obviously there will be a computer in every room to use, however we would be very grateful if teaching staff would allow students to use their ipad for this session only. We are also going to tell students they can use their own mobile devices if they can access the internet (not on the school WiFi). There will also be some paper copies of some activities available in case of any technology problems on Tuesday afternoon.
When will the students know what they are doing? Grouping lists for Years 8-13 will be sent out on Monday 13 th January by or can be found on the special PD Day website from Monday: All form tutors are asked to share this information with their students during registration or form time on Monday 13 th January. Students should write their sessions and locations into their planners please. Sixth form tutors are asked to let their tutees know their choices in time for Tuesday please. All Lower School tutors were sent the groupings for the Year 7 Directorate Days on Friday 10 th January by Amelia Parker. This details (by Lower School form with tutor names listed beside them) which Directorate Day they are taking part in this time. Therefore, Year 7 students will probably already know what they are doing. If they do not, then please also let them know on Monday 13 th January. Locations will be found in the Locations document as per the information under the question page Where am I?
What if a student doesn t get what they wanted? As I am sure you can imagine, placing 1700 students into 73 activities represents quite a challenge! Wherever possible, we have tried to give students the chance to exercise as much choice as possible. However, we are also working to a very definite timescale. Not only do the staff and students need to know what they are doing and where they will be, but our 73 visitors also need to know how many students they are preparing for. Some categories have been oversubscribed and, for whatever reason, we have not had choices supplied for almost 500 students. This means that we have had to place them ourselves. On the whole this has just meant that we have selected activities within an industry sector that the student selected. But, some students have made no choices at all and we have had to make all their decisions. Of course this can be frustrating for our students but we cannot offer swaps industry sectors have capped numbers and we cannot simply move students in and out of different sectors and sessions. In a small number of cases we have had to move some students out of a chosen industry sector into something completely new; this is due to last-minute drop-outs from businesses in the Retail & PR sector which saw group sizes growing to 35 students. We have moved these students into the Public Sector strand as these are where spare places were however, from what we have been told these will be very enjoyable. If a student has not got what they wanted please help talk through the positive aspects of experiencing something new and different the day is about doing something new and exciting and the career we think we want at school is, more often than not, not what we end up doing. For instance, Paddy Winter was going to earn his millions in the city working in the tax sector for Deloitte and Amelia Parker was going to be a publisher and run her own business called ParkerIles Publishing House. Thank you for all your work: by completing the option selection process you have helped us a huge amount.
What are Year 7 doing? Year 7 will be taking part in their second Directorate Day of the year. The groups are on a carousel throughout the year and by July will have experienced all of the four days in Global Communications, Global Societies, Enterprise and Enquiry and Performance and Creativity. The locations for each of these Directorate Days can be found in the Locations document to be sent out on Monday 13 th January or on the website, which you can use this link to access (from Monday): At the start of the day, students should go to the appropriate meeting places for their Directorate Day, as shown below: i. Global Communications: meet in the courtyard entrance to Hinchingbrooke House ii. Global Societies: meet in the area by the Middle School Student Support Office and the Maths classrooms iii. Enterprise & Enquiry: meet at Well Green iv. Performance & Creativity: meet by the DT block by the Main Gates The aim of each Directorate Day is to provide a truly interactive and exciting day for Year 7 to explore the subjects within each Directorate in a truly cross-curricular fashion. From this, students should be able to see how different subjects work together and often use the same skills. Thank you to all those staff who have worked so hard in creating these tailor-made days for Year 7 students.
What if there are behaviour issues? Our hope is that like PD Day 1 (26 th September) we will have barely any behaviour issues at all. The fact that students will be doing something different and new and with mixed year groups are all going to be influences and, we hope, that they will be too busy having fun! However, there may be some students who pose potential issues and, therefore, please find the process for those students below: In the first instance, we would ask you as the teaching staff support in the room to speak to students, challenge low-level behaviour, discuss sanctions etc. This should be enough in most cases to re-focus the student. However, if the behaviour continues or the behaviour is too extreme and is disrupting the session for other students and the visitor there will be support on hand. All SLT members are on a rota patrolling the site and popping in and out of sessions. There should be a member of SLT and Head of Year in your building at all times. Therefore, please alert them to any situation they will speak to the student and determine whether they can return to the session or need to cool off in a space which is decided at the SLT/HOY s discretion.
What happens if a session finishes early? There is a chance that a session may finish early; if this is the case then we have a Careers stand that groups may visit. There are about 5 representatives from a range of careers including the NHS, Kier and West Anglia Training Association (WATA) who are keen to see as many students as possible and to give them any advice they may be seeking. The careers stands will be situated in the Chapter House in Hinchingbrooke House. If a session finishes early then please escort the students to the House please ensure that you bring the visitor with you so that they are not unaccompanied.
How will students be registered on the day? MORNING REGISTRATION: As our visitors will need to use classrooms to set up their activities in time for the start of sessions at 9am, morning registration will be in central locations. It is impossible for the registers for the whole school to be inputted by an individual so please use your ipads to take the register in the appropriate location (if you do not have an ipad please liaise with other colleagues in your Year Team to use theirs on the day thank you!). Morning registration will be from 8.45am as normal. Please see below for locations and details: Lower School forms: Gym Year 9 forms: Dance Studio Year 10 forms: one end of the Sports Hall (this will be signposted) Year 11 forms: the other end of the Sports Hall (again, this will be signposted) Years 12&13: students will be registered in the first session via the paper registers (collected from staff during each session) Heads of Year and the linked SLT members will be in each appropriate registration area to help keep this process as smooth and calm as possible. Paper registers will be taken in both morning sessions so that we can keep track of students. AFTERNOON REGISTRATION All forms will have a 15 minute registration beginning at 2pm. This will be in their normal form rooms with their form tutors before being sent to their afternoon session at 2.15pm. Again, sixth form students will be registered through the use of paper registers at the start of afternoon sessions. These will be collected so we can ensure attendance for the afternoon sessions as well. Any truancy will be picked up and sanctioned by the relevant year groups.
What if I don t have a form or am a sixth form tutor? Around 150 people will be arriving on site from 8am on Tuesday 14 th January to represent the 73 businesses who are running sessions. We have asked all visitors to sign in in the Inner Hall of Hinchingbrooke House. Here they will be welcomed and enjoy tea and coffee. However, they will all need some time to set up classrooms and prepare for sessions which will begin at 9am. No visitors can be unaccompanied and on site as per Child Protection procedures. Therefore, we need as much as help as possible taking visitors to their location for the morning. Lower School and Middle School form tutors will all be registering the students along with Heads of Year and SLT members. Anyone who does not have to register a form (this includes those without a form, support/co-tutors who do not take a form on Tuesdays, sixth form tutors and support staff as indicated by the locations document) should come to the Library in Hinchingbrooke House from 8.15am onwards please. We will then ask you to please accompany visitors to their rooms so that they can set up. Although you will probably not be with the visitor you have been assigned to for the actual sessions in the morning, please stay with the guest until 9am at which point all students and staff will move to the right location. It is important that visitors are welcomed and are ready for what will prove to be a busy morning. Rob Cooper and his team have kindly agreed that they will be on hand for any major IT problems; however, for your information, included on the next page is the technology guidance that we have sent out to visitors so that you are aware of what they can and cannot do if they have brought their own laptops. There are 50 form tutors registering their form groups along with Heads of Year and SLT; therefore, we should have plenty of staff to accompany our visitors. We are hugely grateful for all your help and support on what will be a busy morning!
TECHNOLOGY Some of you have said that you would like to bring in and use your own laptops/devices. This is absolutely fine. However, if you are going to bring your own laptop please be aware of the following: - You can plug your laptop straight into a projector to show any presentation/resources you have created - You may not access the network and internet using your own device (due to the risk of viruses) - If you need the internet then you may use our pcs (there is one in every classroom connected to a projector) - Alternatively, you may wish to bring a USB device and use our pcs to show your presentation - We have a collection of usb devices which you are free to borrow on the day if you would like to
How will the day run? As per your staff guidance document, the day will follow the normal school times (with the exception of afternoon form time). Included on the next page is the timetable for the day. Buses: By keeping the times as normal, we hope that this will allow for any lateness with the buses. Obviously, if there are any major issues on the day, we will react to those if and when is necessary. Duties: All duties should continue as normal all timings are the same, so no duties will be affected by this. Start of the day: Morning registration will be in central locations from 8.45am- 9am please send students to their first session at 9am. End of the day: The last session will finish at 3.30pm. Please dismiss your group calmly from the classroom when the bell goes.
the day Visitors arrive on site at Hinchingbrooke House greeted and taken to set up sessions in locations by anyone without a form Staff duties (as normal) Students register with tutors in central locations (published in locations document and earlier in this document) Session Break (Staff duties as normal) Session Lunch (Staff duties as normal) Form time registration for 15 minutes in normal form rooms. Please send students to their afternoon location at Afternoon session taught by teaching staff as per groupings and locations documents as of Monday 13 th January 1530 End of the day (Staff duties as normal)
Are the students in school uniform? As per Paddy Winter s last week, students MUST BE IN SCHOOL UNIFORM AS NORMAL on Tuesday. The only exceptions to this rule are students taking part in the following activities: i) Armed Forces: for this activity, students will need to be in their PE Kit and will need jogging bottoms. Their uniform is their change of clothes. Any students taking part in the Armed Forces sessions as their second session of the day, should change into their PE Kit at break so they are ready for the start of the session at 11.15am ii) Both the Life as a Professional Sportsperson and Professional Rugby sessions will require students to be in their PE Kit. The same guidance applies e.g. students who have it for their first session can come dressed in their PE Kit with their uniform as their change of clothes. Anyone doing it for their second session should change into their PE Kit at break time. iii) Are you stage material : this session requires students to be in their PE Kit as well. The same guidance applies e.g. students who have it for their first session can come dressed in their PE Kit with their uniform as their change of clothes. Anyone doing it for their second session should change into their PE Kit at break time. ALL STUDENTS MUST BE IN SCHOOL UNIFORM FOR AFTERNOON REGISTRATION
