Percentage of submitters menioning theme Karangahape Road Streetscapes Improvement Project Online feedback summary The Karangahape Road Streetscape Improvement project team held a stall at the White Night event at the bottom of Mercury Lane, and at the Myers Park Medley event. Members of the public were asked to tell the team what they loved about K Rd, and what they would change about it. Alternatively, submitters could go online to give their feedback. A summary of the online feedback as of 16 March 2016 is below. Please note this is an interim summary. 'What do you love': Karangahape Road Streetscapes online feedback 40% % History/ Architecture Art/ Culture Shopping Facilities Character/ personality Accessibility Entertainment/ events Dislike Theme identified in feedback People were able to comment on more than one aspect, and one comment might relate to more than one theme. Not all comments were relevant to the project, or the road. 20 total comments were made online, and percentages above are based on this total number of comments.
Theme Love History/ Architecture (5 total comments) Love Art/ Culture (2 total comments) Love Shopping/ Shops/ Businesses (6 total comments) Love Current Facilities (1 total comment) Love Character/ Personality (7 total comments) Love Accessibility (3 total comments) Love Entertainment/ Events (3 total comments) Dislike (4 total comments) Illuminative quotes I like the old looking buildings I particularly like the various old signage along the road- eg the Vegas Girl and the 'Farker' sign. It would be a real shame to lose these things that give a visual history and a sense of humour to the place. Watching the cleaning up of St Kevin's arcade and the placement of new signs has illustrated this to me. I feel the new, illuminated signs, though they look fresh, is an instant way the arcade has lost a little of its identity. I'm hoping the old letterwriting still around in the arcade will be kept alongside the new The street art (like the bronze pig in a tug-of-war), to the stylised pavements in parts The art around the footpath The variety of restaurants and cafes and shops It's historically a high street shopping area and should play to that with good quality stores, entertainment etc. K Road has an eclectic mix of retail outlets, refreshingly free of many of the chain stores that dominate most retail centres. It has a wide flat pavement The number of people/residents, and their diversity; the character and uniqueness We love the character and diversity of the people The people. Krd has a diverse and vibrant Street scape. I love people eating on the street. The drag Queens and poets, first Thursdays etc. Love the character and feel of the street, especially around St. Kevin's Arcade. The many shops, the places to relax and take in the scene. The ease of car parking. There is reasonable turnover of spaces and I know that I can drive into K Rd, park and do my business or dine and leave. I will not visit the area if I can not get a car park. There are many pedestrians that use the area with cars, trucks and buses - this works well under normal circumstances It's above the city centre geographically so close, up high and runs along the ridge line, so easy to get along. The drag Queens and poets, first Thursdays etc. Not much at present. It's a dump. Feels unsafe and is unsightly and too many vagrants. We love the character and diversity of the people, however the over-commercialisation of the street is detrimental and discouraging for residents and visitors I feel the new, illuminated signs, though they look fresh, is an instant way the arcade has lost a little of its identity. I'm hoping the old letterwriting still around in the arcade will be kept alongside the new

There are many pedestrians that use the area with cars, trucks and buses - this works well under normal circumstances It's above the city centre geographically so close, up high and runs along the ridge line, so easy to get along. Although I like the old buildings some of the facades look quite abandoned and that gives a gloomy look to the the area as whole. Keep the old icons Better pedestrian priority and bus priority. Put trams up K'Rd and Ponsonby Road to link with the tram lines up Queen Street.
Suggestions for pedestrian safety/ facilities (6 comments; ) Suggestions re traffic speed (4 comments; ) Suggestions re public behaviour (1 comment; ) Suggestions for more art (1 comment; ) Suggestions re businesses/ shops (4 comments; ) Suggestions re residential housing (2 comments; ) Suggestions re maintenance (1 comment; ) Other specific suggestions (2 total comments; ) encourage walking; consider safety, especially on adjoining streets, by increasing street lighting and street cleaning and better footpath maintenance Red light cameras between Pitt Street and Karangahape Road intersection. Currently it is very dangerous intersection with frequent red light runners even pedestrian safety is at risk due to red light runners and nothing appears to happen with council and no consequences for drivers which makes the behaviour continue. There needs to be more safe walking and cycling routes created for those who walk or cycle. This is often used by cars to zoom through to Hopetoun St to avoid K Rd traffic. A lot of pedestrians use the road to walk down as the footpath is too narrow and not sufficient. It should be restricted to approved vehicles to allow safe passage for pedestrians day and night. If you can make feeder paths and roads to K Road safer for pedestrians, it will encourage more people to leave their cars at home and walk. More accessibility for cyclists and pedestrians. More sidewalk space, facilitating pedestrian traffic and allowing cafes and other shops to provide outdoor seating. Turn the intersection of Hereford and K Rd into a full pedestrian crossing. Take Day Street for example. This is often used by cars to zoom through to Hopetoun St to avoid K Rd traffic. There should be excellent walkability and traffic calming. Make the speed limit for Karangahape road 40km like Ponsonby Road. Slow the traffic Move homeless from peoples shopfronts and urinating and drinking on the street. Introduce more public street art, sculptures and murals Better tenants in the shops. Better cafes eateries and bars like Ponsonby not the low life places there now. Encourage businesses such as cafes and restaurants to increase the social nature of the street High-rise residential development Encourage walking; consider safety, especially on adjoining streets, by increasing street lighting and street cleaning and better footpath maintenance Remove the seedy element of strip clubs and smashed drink bottles. Graffiti on Boardman Lane. Connect the two ends of the street by turning the overpass into a market - create more space by canter levering mini shops off the bridge. Ramp onto the cycle way. Please do up Beresford Square including stopping the traffic entering it from Pitt Street i.e. close of the exit lanes from Beresford square. Also do the Beresford Square station at the same time as the Mercury Lane station to minimise disruption
to residents of the area instead of doing 2 large pieces of construction 1 now and 1 in the future. Makes more sense and to avoid disruption to do them both at the same time and upgrade Beresford Square. Make outdoor dining more prevalent to enhance the atmosphere in the area.
