January 2015 Impacts and travel advice Intro As part of the Government-sponsored Thameslink Programme, Network Rail is rebuilding London Bridge mainline rail station to provide more space, improved connections to more destinations and more reliable services. The rail and Tube station will remain open but Southeastern, Southern and Thameslink customers will be affected at certain times until the project is completed in The next period of major service changes begin in December 2014, continuing into next year with some long-term changes taking place to some services See below for details of ticketing arrangements. Major changes to services from January 2015 to August 2016 Southern passengers Due to reduced tracks into London Bridge a new timetable will be in operation including a number of changes to evening peak departures from London Bridge. Southern services will operate as usual to and from London Bridge Between 12 January 2015 and August 2016 Southern (and any permitted route) passengers who currently interchange onto Southeastern services at London Bridge for travel to Charing Cross or Waterloo East will be unable to do so due to changes to the operation of Southeastern services. Thameslink passengers From 5 January 2015, for three years until January 2018, no Bedford to Brighton Thameslink trains will call at London Bridge station. A reduced Thameslink service will run between Brighton and London Bridge in the off peak and a very limited Thameslink service in the peak. Thameslink services will continue to operate between Bedford, Three Bridges and Brighton. However, they will be diverted via an alternative route between London Blackfriars and East Croydon and will not call at London Bridge. Some services may call at Elephant & Castle.
Journeys between East Croydon and London Blackfriars will be extended by 10 to 12 minutes. Thameslink services operating to and from Luton Airport Parkway will not call at London Bridge. A half hourly service will run between Brighton and London Bridge in the offpeak on Mondays to Fridays and between 0730 and 1930 on Saturdays. There will also be a very limited morning and evening service. Services between Ashford/Rochester and Bedford will operate between Ashford/Rochester and London Blackfriars only. Thameslink peak services which could not operate in December will return to Redhill. There will be amendments to these services. Between 12 January 2015 and August 2016 Thameslink (and any permitted route) customers who currently interchange onto Southeastern services London Bridge for travel to Charing Cross or Waterloo East will be unable to do so due to changes to the operation of Southeastern services. Southeastern passengers From 12 January 2015 to August 2016, all Southeastern services to and from Charing Cross will not call at London Bridge. Between January and May 2015 there are exceptions at the end of the day when a limited number of services leaving London Charing Cross will run via Waterloo East, London Cannon Street and London Bridge. From 12 January 2015 Southeastern services from New Cross, St. Johns, Deptford, Greenwich, Maze Hill, Westcombe Park stations will no longer operate to and from London Charing Cross or Waterloo East, and will instead operate to and form London Cannon Street. Services to Plumstead, Woolwich Dockyard, Belvedere and Erith will also be diverted to and from London Cannon Street until August Some services will be amended to arrive or depart at an alternative London terminal South West Trains South West Trains passengers are no longer able to board Southeastern services to London Bridge from Waterloo East. London Overground passengers Sydenham, Forest Hill, Honor Oak Park, Brockley, New Cross Gate and Surrey Quays stations may be busier than usual, especially northbound in the morning peak Canada Water will be busier than usual for interchanges between London Overground and Jubilee line, especially during the morning peak.
London Underground passengers London Bridge Underground station will operate as normal during the planned works. London Underground station and the Jubilee line at London Bridge, Southwark and Waterloo may be exceptionally busy, as a result of diverted National Rail customers. Victoria and Canada Water stations may be busier than usual during the service changes, as National Rail customers are diverted and use alternative routes to get to their destination. Cannon Street mainline and Tube stations will be open seven days a week with extended hours to accommodate additional passengers. Travel advice and information The Department for Transport, Transport for London, Network Rail and the train operators are working together to ensure you can continue to make your journey into London. The impacts on journeys will depend on the particular services you currently use to access London Bridge and what alternatives exist. There are differences to service patterns between travel in the peak and off-peak. To get to London Bridge (or other National Rail destination e.g. Charing Cross) some passengers will be required to make a different journey choice from the station at which their diverted train arrives/departs or to change onto a different National Rail service outside of London. You are urged to check how their journeys could be affected and to follow the recommended travel advice. Go to or your train operator. We strongly advise you to follow our travel advice to avoid crowding and possible delays or being charged. The alternatives you can consider include: Changing the train you catch from your home station so that you don t need to change onto a different service catch a Cannon Street service which will still call at London Bridge. This may involve travelling a few minutes earlier or later Changing to a Cannon Street train en- route we strongly advise you wherever possible, to change trains to catch a Cannon Street service outside London to avoid exceptionally busy services within central London and possible delays to your journey Examples of stations where it might be advisable to change trains includes Orpington, Sevenoaks, Tonbridge or Hither Green Look at the options available at the London end of your journey for example walking from your final station, cycling or catching a bus. It is often quicker to walk between stations in and around London Bridge than many people think.
The Thameslink Programme has produced maps to help you plan for yourself and maps will be available central London stations. Timetables and routing advice are available from your relevant train operator Information for passengers who no longer have National Rail route access to London Waterloo East, Charing Cross, Cannon Street, London Bridge stations If you are unable to complete your journey by interchanging on National Rail services outside of London, TfL has agreed to accept tickets at specific London Underground stations and on specific bus routes without you being charged. However if you do use a different route or enter/exit the TfL network at a different location from those outlined below you will be charged a fare for the journey. Systems such as Oyster and ticket barriers will be programmed to allow eligible passengers to use their existing National Rail, Oyster and Contactless tickets/products to pass through barriers on the TfL network. There are a number of exceptions to this: o Magnetic paper point-to-point tickets on TfL bus services which will need to be shown to the driver o Southern specific Smart Cards on TfL bus services which will need to be shown to the driver You can use the following Underground and routes without being charged: Between London Bridge and Waterloo/Southwark on the Jubilee line and on bus services (services 381 and RV1) on the section of route between London Bridge and Waterloo. Between London Bridge and Charing Cross on Jubilee/Bakerloo/Northern Lines and on bus services (services RV1 and 15) on the section of route between London Bridge and Charing Cross. Between Cannon Street and Charing Cross/Embankment on District/Circle lines and on bus services (service 15) on the section of route between Cannon Street and Charing Cross. Between Elephant and Castle and London Bridge on Northern Line and on bus services (service 35, 40, 133 & 343) on the section of route between Elephant and Castle and London Bridge. Between Blackfriars and London Bridge and on bus services (service 17 (Blackfriars North), 381 & RV1 (Blackfriars South)) on the section of route between Blackfriars and London Bridge. Greenwich passengers may use the DLR for travel between Greenwich and Lewisham
The ticketing arrangement applies to all ticket types including National Rail season tickets and day tickets, Oyster Pay As you Go, Contactless and Southern Smartcards. If you have a Travelcard (daily or season) you can use any route; however if you have a London Terminals tickets will need to follow the specified routes to complete journeys. If you travel with an Oyster or Contactless will need to following specified routes to avoid being charged. Southeastern Passengers who are travelling to Charing Cross or Waterloo East are required to change at London Bridge or travel to Cannon Street where their tickets will be accepted on London Underground and eligible bus services on the section of routes between London Bridge and Waterloo/Southwark, between London Bridge and Charing Cross and between Cannon Street and Charing Cross/Embankment. Greenwich passengers may use the DLR for travel between Greenwich and Lewisham Thameslink passengers from the south of London (with a Thameslink only ticket), whose final destination is currently London Bridge should change at Elephant and Castle or Blackfriars for onward travel to London Bridge where their tickets will be accepted on London Underground or eligible buses the section of route between Elephant and Castle and London Bridge and between Blackfriars and London Bridge. Thameslink passengers from the north can already use their existing London Thameslink tickets on London Underground services via West Hampstead, Kentish Town and St Pancras International to reach London Bridge Southern and Thameslink (with London Terminals tickets) passengers who currently interchange onto National Rail services at London Bridge for travel to Charing Cross or Waterloo East should take London Underground or eligible bus services where their tickets will be accepted on the section of route between London Bridge to Charing Cross or Waterloo/Southwark. South West Train passengers who currently interchange at Waterloo East for London Bridge should take London Underground or eligible bus services on the section of route between London Bridge and Waterloo where their tickets will be accepted. The Jubilee line between Waterloo and London Bridge will be exceptionally busy during peak periods due to diverted National Rail customers. Expect crowding and queuing and allow more time for your journey.
