With great opportunities for hands-on learning, expert advice on the university application process, and a packed social programme, the Summer School is ideal for students considering an undergraduate degree in Medical, Biomedical or Health Sciences at a UK university. Key course facts Course dates Mon 18 Jul 2016 Fri 29 Jul 2016 Tuition fee 2,000 which includes accommodation, breakfast, dinner and social activities. The cost does not include air fares, lunch, taxi transfers or insurance. Entry requirements: All students are required to have a good academic record, and an interest in studying Medicine, Biomedical or Health Sciences, and an IELTS score of 5.0 (in total and each sub-set). WHAT DOES THE INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL INCLUDE? An introduction to the different careers available in medicine and health sciences. An overview of Medical, Biomedical and Health Sciences undergraduate degrees in the UK. A taste of what it would be like to study Medicine, Biomedical Sciences, Radiography or Physiotherapy in the UK. The opportunity to experience studying on campus at a London-based hospital and medical school. Guidance on interview techniques and first-hand experience of the medical selection Multi Mini Interviews (MMIs). Additional information about the UK Clinical Aptitude Test (UKCAT). 3 PLANNED ACTIVITIES Welcome and overview of the programme Ice-breaker games and activities, including Understanding the British a fun session which will give an introduction to aspects of British culture and language. An overview of medical training in the UK This session will provide an introduction to the variety of careers available in medicine and related health sciences. You will also be given a tour of St George s Hospital and Medical School. Life as a medical student, including a presentation by current students Learn about the entry requirements to study Medicine at university. Lab sessions Take advantage of the opportunity to carry out simple experiments in the Biomedical Sciences department; find out about relevant careers in this field and the entry requirements to study Biomedical Sciences at university. Radiography workshop You will learn about imaging and radiotherapy by diagnosing medical conditions using real x-rays and scans. You will also learn about the entry requirements to study Radiography at the University. Physiotherapy workshop Using three case studies, you will learn about the three main areas of physiotherapy; neurological, respiratory and musculoskeletal. You will also learn about the entry requirements to study Physiotherapy at the University. Introduction to clinical practice You will rotate around three or four clinical skill stations, including basic life support, skeletons, reflexes and heart sounds. Introduction to surgery You will be shown a video of a surgery and talked through the procedure with the opportunity to ask questions. You will be taught how to suture, and given the opportunity to put these skills into practice. Clinical communication This session will introduce the importance of communication skills for healthcare professionals, and provide the opportunity to role-play a GP consultation, with an actor playing the role of a patient and you as a GP. Hunterian Museum tour This museum, located within the Royal College of Surgeons, covers over 200 years of surgery and goes into the techniques, instruments and educational aspects of surgery. University-style lecture Experience a sample lecture on a topic that will be explored in more detail in the afternoon session. Problem Based Learning (PBL) Work in groups with fellow students to tackle a clinical problem, integrating theory and practice and applying knowledge and skills to develop a solution. River cruise on the Thames Hands-on learning

4 Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament Expert teaching support The clinical sessions were amazing! I ve never had the chance to do anything like it before.
