5 MEETING PRESENTATIONS S GUEST SPEAKER Dr Susan Koch, Director RDNS Institute, Associate Professor La Trobe University Positive approaches to dementia care Sponsored by RDNS Susan is currently Chair of the Australian Government Minister s Dementia Advisory Group, and she has been the Director (Collaboration) of the Australian Centre for Evidence Based Aged Care (ACEBAC) and President of Alzheimer s Australia (Vic). She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing, Australia and the Australian Association of Ageing. Her research has its focus on practice issues including restraint use; elder abuse; care for people living with dementia and medicine management. LOOKING FORWARD 1. Dryden Badenoch, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Relaxed Therapy, Wellington Icebergs and Tsunamis This presentation describes the assumptions and limitations of NZ dementia demographic data; and provides an overview of prevalence, incidence, diagnostic and prognostic research. Dr Oleg Kiriaev, Auckland DHB Advance Care Planning for people with cognitive impairment An overview of the situation in NZ and results from a study exploring the utility of structured clinical tools for assessing capacity to engage in advance care planning. 5. Dr Etu Mau, Psychogeriatrician, Waikato DHB, and Dr Emme Chacko, Psychogeriatrician, Auckland DHB Driving and dementia Update on local research: the Maze Navigation test and the impact of driving cessation on patients with dementia and carers. 2. Dr Bronwyn Copeland, Psychiatrist, Bay of Plenty DHB Reframing the meaning and response to behaviours in Dementia Care A tool was developed to enable staff to explore different perspectives for behaviours and the outcomes of their own responses. There was a decrease in PRN (as needed) medication and incident reporting, and increased observed meaningful interaction, but little change in neuropsychiatric inventory remaining in the 9 months data collection time. 6. Elin Engstrom, Psychologist, University of Auckland, Janine Maari Locke, Behaviour Analyst, Private, Dr Oliver Mudford, Director of Applied Behaviour Analyst Programme, University of Auckland Applied behaviour analysis contributions to dementia care Examples of research in practice in Auckland dementia care facilities including maintaining skills, reducing behaviours that challenge, memory books, and increased engagement.

A carer s view on young onset Alzheimers. 8. Barbara Fox, Operations Manager, Alzheimers Auckland, Auckland Outcomes framework development The learnings encountered from the process of moving towards evidence based, outcome focussed work within Alzheimers Auckland. 9. Dr Jan Weststrate, Care-Metric, Paekakariki Quality Counts Bupa has over five years of data of clinical indicators in over 40 Bupa care homes. Are we able to demonstrate that the care has improved over the past five years? TOWARDS PERSON-CENTRED CARE 10. Helene Ritchie, Carer, author, Capital and Coast DHB Board member, Registered Psychologist, Wellington City Councillor, Wellington Peter and Me: a love story becomes a carer s anguish A presentation based on her book which focuses on delivering person-centred dementia care: the personal, the clinical, and the political. 11. Sheryl Haywood, Gerontology Nurse Practitioner Intern, Canterbury DHB, Ashburton and Rural Health Services Factors influencing the practice and sustainability of person-centred care for the elderly with dementia in residential aged care A systematic review of 23 studies identified barriers and positive factors influencing personcentred care. Recommends developing NZ best practice guidelines for person-centred care. 11. Tracey Hawkes, Dementia Educator, and Dr Susan Gee, Researcher, Canterbury DHB, Christchurch Walking In Anothers Shoes in Home-Based Support A student-centred experiential and appreciative inquiry-based programme to encourage personcentred care. The presentation reflects on the importance of home-based carers, and the unique challenges in providing person-centred care in home-based settings. BEING PERSON-CENTRED IN RESIDENTIAL CARE 12. Lisa Cooke, Unit Manager/Occupational Therapist Duncan Lodge, Sprott House, Wellington Enabling independence in a stage 3 unit This presentation describes moving from a medical model to a social model of care; changing layout and design to increase socialisation and create a home; person centred care in lifestyle plans. 13. Marlies Dorrestein, Consultant Occupational Therapist, Tina Chivers, Manager Seadrome Home and Hospital, Mae Hensman, Master s student/research assistant, Margaret Fincken, Diversional Therapist Seadrome, Auckland An occupation based sensory assessment and intervention programme The behavioural effects of this programme on residents with advanced dementia in a secure dementia care facility are investigated. 14. Jenny Prentice, Facility manager, and Trish Shallard, Senior RN, Woburn Home, Lower Hutt, Presbyterian Support Central Our residents don t live in our facility, we work in their home - our journey towards residentcentred care. Describes the facility and the issues, what they did to effect change, and case studies of residents.

Colene Herbert, Project Manager, IHC Successful Ageing project, Hamilton Learning to do things differently Innovation within an Intellectual Disability Service framework IHC has been engaged in a four year Successful Ageing Project committed to enable people to remain in their homes for as long as they can. This presentation describes areas of innovation and enhancement of existing practice for people who have an intellectual disability and dementia. 16. Darral Campbell, Manager, Alzheimers Canterbury, Christchurch Artzheimers Art appreciation for people living in the community with a dementia: a collaboration between Alzheimers Canterbury and Christchurch City Art Gallery. 17. Dr Annie Weir, Impact Research NZ, Auckland Effective Client-focused Dementia Day Programmes in the Community: Improving the Quality of Life for People Living with Dementia and Their Families Presents the results of evaluation of day programmes investigating what are the elements that make up an effective client-focused day programme 18.
