5 SUBJECT SYNOPSES Introduction to Marketing (HBU121) Welcome to Introduction to Marketing where you will be exploring the key factors impacting organisations and their ability to create, drive and deliver value to customers. Considered as one of the core functions of any business, marketing and its activities are crucial for sustaining a competitive advantage in a highly energised and dynamic global landscape. In this subject, you will be examining the various elements of a Marketing Strategy such as pricing and promotion decisions and how this translates to a valuable brand for all businesses across multiple industries. The complexities and challenges of constant change in societal norms and technologies have affected the way in which marketers can reach and persuade their consumers to engage with companies. As such, the shift is now towards a highly integrated and optimized marketing plan with a primary focus on customer relationship management. This subject will enable you to understand how consumers relate to products and services on offer and the mix of tools used in marketing activities to best communicate and serve these consumers. Introduction to Business Law (HBU122) Introduction to Business Law is the first step in introducing students to the complexities of law studies, and it highlights the essential importance that a knowledge of the law plays, in being able to succeed in business or even take the first steps in your business career and business development. Introduction to Business Law will equip students with the knowledge of how to actually start in business and the best way to operate your business. Students will learn all about the type of business relationships you can form to grow and expand, the benefits and pitfalls of each option and how to minimise risk and tax with smart choices. Students will also leave the course with a solid knowledge of contract law - which impacts upon everything that you do in business, and life, and with a full understanding about personal property, real estate and intellectual property - all the things that you acquire through having a business. Introduction to Management (HBU126) This course introduces students to the roles and functions of managers. It draws on multi-disciplinary sources including economics, psychology, sociology and organisational behaviour. The content includes an introduction to organisations and the need for and nature of management. It examines the evolution of management theory, organisational environments, and corporate social responsibility and ethics. Students will apply theoretical concepts and models to management problems and issues in the context of the global business environment. Professional Communication (HBU125) This subject is designed to assist students to enhance their ability to effectively communicate in a contemporary business environment. More specifically, this foundation subject assists students to evaluate academic literature in various business contexts, to communicate effectively as an individual or within groups and to apply ethical practices in different business contexts. The subject has a focus on personal and career development and an analysis of the employability skills sought by modern day organisations. Accounting for Decision Making (HBU127) A purpose of accounting is to provide the information necessary to management to enable them to make decisions for the ongoing sustainability of an organisation. This same information is used by external users in making decisions about investments and providing resources to that organisation. To effectively use accounting information, both managers and external users must acquire an adequate understanding of the accounting system, including its nature and limitations. Good decisions require proper analysis of accounting data and the ability to identify all the pertinent elements of the decision making process. The subject is not designed to be a detailed bookkeeping class, but rather an overview of how to use and interpret financial information. Introduction to Human Resource Management (HBU120) The aim of this course is to provide students with an understanding of contemporary HRM and the important strategic role that it plays in helping an organisation build and maintain competitive advantage. More specifically, the course will examine HR policies, practices, and systems in the areas of: planning and recruitment; ethical and legal frameworks for HR; employee selection; training and development; performance management; compensation; employee relations; diversity management; OH&S; employee separation; and HRM in a global environment. E-Business Information Systems and Technology (HBU123) Information Systems and Information Technology are no longer just cost centres filled with expensive computers and tech experts - IS and IT now are the business! This subject introduces and explains what information systems and information technology are and then focuses on their application to business, which is called e-business and e-commerce. In particular it focuses on how organisations may use information systems and information technology to create business value and gain competitive advantage. No matter which part of business students are interested in, or which type of organisation students may work for, this subject is central to a successful career in the 21st century. It is not a subject that focuses on bits and bytes, programming or Web development, it is about how organisations can apply modern IS and IT to help them succeed. Graduates with these skills are in growing demand around the world. 4

6 Statistical and Business Decision Analysis (HBU124) This subject will help develop the understanding that business students require to make informed decisions using various forms of information and data and in turn be able to interpret, summarise and communicate the results effectively. The emphasis of this subject is to develop conceptual thinking, reasoning and qualitative interpretation skills in addition to essential mathematical calculations and formula. This subject covers three areas of business decision making: the mathematics of finance, descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. Financial mathematics includes time value of money, simple and compound interest rates, annuities and perpetuities. Descriptive statistics includes collecting data, summarising and interpreting them through numerical and graphical techniques. Inferential statistics includes selecting and applying the correct statistical technique in order to make estimates or test claims about a population based on a sample. Other topics will include simple correlation, regression and time series analysis. Appropriate statistical packages will be utilised. Technologies for the Fashion Industry (HFB211) The rise of technology and new global markets has created challenges and opportunities for those involved in technical developments. Understanding and evaluating such technology is fundamental to the development of a business or brand. This subject focuses on giving you the ability to understand, research and develop the use of technology, and to apply and evaluate this to determine the return on investment for product development, retail activities and sales and marketing opportunities. The development of this technological advancement has been rapid and progressive in fashion business practices and therefore knowledge and understanding of these opportunities is vital when entering the workplace environment. Fashion Design and Sourcing (HFB212) In this subject you will learn the process, stages and theory involved in developing fashion products to key benchmark specifications. You will research and establish design briefs, prioritise design requirements, and source product for appropriateness of its end use. The subject will develop the technical knowledge and language required to communicate effectively in fashion design enterprises, from design development, sourcing through to final product selling and buying. Fashion Culture Principles and Practice (HFB213) Within this subject significant influences on the contemporary fashion industry from the 20th and 21st centuries are identified and investigated. Relevant theories of fashion are reviewed as are changes in the contemporary fashion cycle. Fashion market movement and trends are examined and analysed and the theories behind this movement investigated. Consumer segments are examined and target consumer profiles are related to the positioning strategy of a fashion business. We will examine the forms of business planning and communication through which we organise this research, and how this research helps guide product development process. The relationship between the target customer and market influences is critical to analysis of a company s positioning strategy, planning and development. Range Development and Sustainability (HFB214) This subject is designed to provide you with an insight into the fashion product development supply chain and its management. The pathway of a fashion product from its raw material state through the range development supply chain to a commercial fashion line is examined. All processes at each stage of development and production are examined along with their impact on scheduling, logistics, quality and sustainability. The Premium Fashion Brand (HFB215) In this subject you will acquire knowledge of and expertise to manage premium brands through research and analysis of brand and marketing management - creative and design management and strategic marketing including change management, leadership and efficiency skills. A detailed understanding of premium and prestige branding within the global fashion and textiles industry will be undertaken. The identification of brand management concepts will be identified and further developed. Brand image, culture and vision will also be identified through recognition and use of innovative practise. Entrepreneurial Practices and Innovation (HFB216) In this subject you will research and analyse innovation and entrepreneurial skills, examining new and existing business models and practices. The competitive market place and globalisation will be investigated to reveal economic advantages. Industry competitiveness in cost, delivery and quality will be researched and the commercialisation of new products and services that reflect innovation and entrepreneurial practices will be determined. 5

7 Fashion Trade and Development (HFB217) In this subject you will acquire the expertise and knowledge to establish and manage your own fashion business. The local and global logistical considerations when establishing a new business or purchasing an existing one and the operational planning required managing this process will be explored. Fashion business start-up information includes understanding industry specific legal, taxation and insurance requirements; identifying opportunities and processes relating to fashion industry funding; and, developing financial projections to refine a fashion business positioning strategy. Digital identity and emarketing (HFB218) In this subject you will demonstrate expertise and knowledge to research and analyse technologies and develop strategies to engage and service customers and stakeholders. Digital technologies are analysed to reveal economic and service implications. Current and future trends are investigated to enable a critical review of the advantages and disadvantages for a business or identity. You will research and evaluate related software or programs, risks and legalities required for implementing and utilising technology and the perceived competitive advantage Ongoing fashion business concerns are analysed and a financially sound fashion business strategy is developed including: building a specific market profile; cash flow management; promotion and online requirements. On completion of this subject students should be able to present a strong global fashion business concept. 6
