3 The Platzl Copyright OpenStreetMap contributors The Hofbräuhaus is located prominently at the Platzl, within walking distance of Marienplatz. It s a lively area with several great places to sit and eat, among them two restaurants and a tea and spices shop Alfons Schuhbeck, the famous German chef, owned, as well as the Hard Rock Café.

4 The Munich Hofbräuhaus is doubtless the most famous beer hall all over the world. It s been a part of Munich s history for more than 400 years and is as popular (or even more) today than it was centuries ago. Wilhelm V, Duke of Bavaria, decided he wanted to save costs and brew his own beer instead of importing it from Einbeck in Lower Saxony so he founded Hofbräuhaus in1592. In 1605 the brewery moved to the current location and earned the name the White brewery because it brewed white/wheat beer exclusively. In 1896 the place became too small to host brewery and restaurant, so the brewery moved to the Innere Wiener Strasse (near Underground station Max-Weber-Platz), where today stands the Hofbräukeller. This is another beer hall of the Hofbräu company with a big beer garden. The Allies heavily damaged the building at Platzl during WWII; only the ground floor and the cellars remained intact. The building as you see it today was reconstructed in Nowadays, it s even bigger and more beautiful than ever. There are several locations within the Hofbräuhaus that you can visit.

5 Schwemme This is the place everyone refers to when talking about the Hofbräuhaus. The Schwemme (watering place) on the ground floor is the heart of the Hofbräuhaus. It holds about 1300 guests. This is the room where the brewers originally brewed the beer. In the middle of the huge hall is a podium for the band. The house band plays traditional Bavarian music every day, and on the weekends outside bands entertain the guests. In order not to forget the cultural aspect of your beer drinking visit, some interesting tidbits you can experience yourself at the Schwemme:

6 Personal Beer Mug Lockers Once you enter the beer hall, turn to your left to find a unique attraction: the personal beer mug lockers (Masskrugtresor). The Munich Hofbräuhaus has 424 lockers and the only possibility to get one is to inherit it. People who have a locker would never give up this unique privilege. This is quite an expensive privilege; it costs around 200 Euro per year to retain the right to your locker, and you even have to wash your stein yourself. Regulars Tables (Stammtisch) Some of the tables have signs above them with a name. These are the so-called regulars tables and are exclusively for the Stammtisch members on certain days of the week.

7 These customers come here weekly or even daily to drink a beer and spend time with their friends. The Munich Hofbräuhaus hosts more than 100 groups of regulars that meet here at a certain time every week. They give themselves fancy names like Lying Barons (Die Lügenbarone) or Regulars of King Ludwig and select a slogan for their group. Once a group establishes a Stammtisch, it has a certain table and nobody else is supposed to use that table on the days the group meets. Want to learn more? Walk all the way through the Schwemme and up the stairs to see the regulars plates with pictures of the members, their slogan, name and information of founding date and weekly meetings. Some groups have met for more than 40 years.

8 Dirndl and Lederhosen Bavarian Tracht The Hofbräuhaus is also a great place to watch people wearing dirndl and lederhosen. Some of the older guests still wear the original, authentic village Tracht that you don t see much of nowadays. If you own a dirndl or lederhosen, this is a great opportunity to show them off. Biergarten If you think the Schwemme is too loud, crowded or hot, why not take a refreshing break in the beer garden. In the middle of the city of Munich you can find a peaceful shady place beneath old chestnut trees. The beer obviously is the same, as is the food, but it s quieter and suitable even for kids.

9 Festival Hall You don't usually see this place because it s reserved for all kinds of celebrations. It s a huge hall with a large vaulted ceiling. The decorations alone are worth viewing with frescos of Bavarian coats of arms and old charter flags. It can seat 900 people, and many Bavarian dance and folklore evenings take place here. It resembles nothing else in the Schwemme. This is a higher-end Bavarian restaurant with typical food and a very nice, classy ambience. Souvenir Shop

10 Turn right at the entrance door, even before entering the beer hall, and you stand in the souvenir shop. You can buy all kinds of authentic Hofbräuhaus beer steins and other Munich gifts here. In former days the beer mugs were made out of pottery (the gray ones in the picture), but some decades ago they were replaced with glass steins. Nowadays, virtually all beer halls and restaurants use glass mugs.
