2 1 OVERVIEW This addendum to the Lightning Source (LSI) US Print On Demand Operating Manual describes color book on-demand print and distribution services available from LSI. The service includes four-color internal page and cover printing with standard Wholesale Direct and/or Publisher Direct (Short Run and DropShip) distribution offerings for LSI operations. The product specifications, file submission requirements, and business terms are described in this document. 2 COLOR BOOK SPECIFICATIONS 1. Files containing 1-47 pages of content will have additional pages added by LSI to achieve page counts divisible by four and will be saddle-stitched. NOTE: LSI manufactures saddle stitch books with a total page count from 4-48 pages. 2. Files containing pages of content will have additional pages added by LSI to achieve page counts divisible by four and will be perfect bound. NOTE: LSI manufactures perfect bound books with a total page count from pages. 3. Files containing pages of content can be manufactured as either perfect bound or saddlestitched (customer to provide spec) and will have additional pages added by LSI to achieve page counts divisible by four NOTE: LSI manufactures both types of books that have a total page count from pages. The final page of each book must be completely blank and is reserved for a check barcode and other coded production information by LSI. 1. Trim sizes available include 5.5 x 8.5, 7 x 10, 8 x 10, 8.5 x 8.5 and 8.5 x Bind type is determined by the page count. 3. For books with 80 pages or greater, you may elect to have text on the spine. For books with less than 80 pages, spine text is not an option. 4. Books are printed on 70# uncoated offset opaque stock, 385 PPI. Paper meets ANSI and library standards for archival quality. 5. Covers are printed on 80# cover stock, 238 PPI and laminated. Note: To ensure glue adheres to the text pages for perfectbound books and they are bound securely, it is necessary to end the page image.125 short on the bind edge of the stock leaving this area free from toner coverage. Therefore, there will be a minimal gap on any image in the gutter on crossovers within the text block. 3 DIGITAL FILE SUBMISSION STANDARDS Publishers are expected to provide LSI with print ready files sent in accordance with Lightning Source Digital File Submission Standards (see Attachment B). Digital File Submission Standards can also be found on the LSI web site at (click on Book Designers). 4 DIGITAL COLOR CONSIDERATIONS LSI color books are printed using digital color print engine technology and will render different color shades than typical offset inks. 1. The primary colors used in digital printing technology are Cyan, Magenta, Yellow & Black (CMYK). CMYK color printing differs from offset printing processes that use prepared inks or monitors that display Red, Green & Blue (RGB). Consequently, a color defined and displayed in the RGB color space (i.e. your computer monitor) may look slightly different than one defined and displayed in the CMYK color space. 2. It is important to remember that although you may have selected a Pantone Matching System (PMS) color in your applications file, the actual color may look different on your computer screen than on the printed piece you receive. 3. The best way to check and review color from digital printing processes is to view a printed proof. 4. Due to our demand-driven manufacturing process, LSI cannot manipulate any color settings on files that have been submitted. 5 PROOFS LSI requires that all publishers review a proof on each initial title submission to ensure print expectations are met. Proofs are recommended but not required on revisions or resubmissions to titles. 1. Proof costs are set at a fixed cost for the cover along with a cost for the interior. MAN_US Color Book Addendum Page 2 of 9
3 2. When the publisher approves a proof, the publisher accepts responsibility for any and all content quality issues. The title will not be made available for printing until LSI and the publisher approve the proof. 6 ORDERING AND SHIPPING INFORMATION Titles may be ordered using the standard LSI order interfaces (Web or EDI). Color book titles can be made available through our Wholesale and Retail distribution network. Orders will not be accepted for LS UK distribution at this time. Standard shipping options are available and there is no minimum order on initial or subsequent printings. 9 REVISIONS A revision is defined as an editing change initiated by the publisher. Revisions will be processed at the rate specified on Attachment A - Color Book Rate Schedule. Any title that has not yet been approved by the publisher or currently available to print from LSI s digital library qualifies for a revision. 10 SET UP, PRINT, AND DISTRIBUTION CHARGES (See Attachment A Color Book US Rate Schedule and Turnaround Times). 11 PRINTED BOOK QUALITY STANDARDS Quality checks are performed on each book as it is printed. Books are checked to ensure the following: 1. All pages are included in the book in accordance with supplied materials. 2. Cover is applied with correct vertical, horizontal, and angular alignment within 1/16 of an inch variance. 3. Binding is applied firmly and squared to the book block. No excess adhesive is visible after trimming. 4. Book is cut square within 1/16 of an inch variance. 5. Cover and Book Block match. 6. Print registration is subject to +/- 1/16-inch variance. 7. Saddle stitch is subject to +/- 1/16-inch variance on the spine. MAN_US Color Book Addendum Page 3 of 9

6 ATTACHMENT B DIGITAL FILE SUBMISSION STANDARDS DIGITAL TITLE SETUP Publishers may provide digital files of books to LSI to be added to the LSI document library. Publishers must provide LSI with print ready files sent in accordance with the digital file submission instructions provided below. LSI Digital File Submission Standards will ensure the book files being submitted meet LSI file submission standards. Files are processed as received and are not pre-flighted prior to processing. The publisher must resize digital files before submission to LSI to fit available trim sizes produced by LSI. LSI may require that a publisher review a proof for digital files with complex formatting or revisions. Publisher requested special file editing or manipulation and image touch-up/manipulations will be charged to the publisher at the hourly custom services rate as described in Attachment A Color Book US Rate Schedule. LSI prefers digital files that have been uploaded via our website or sent to LSI on a CD, DVD or Zip disk. LSI recommends and supports submission of PDF files that are created using the Adobe Acrobat Distiller program. Other PDF creators are not guaranteed and any additional charges or resubmissions resulting from the use of other PDF creator programs will be the responsibility of the publisher. Files are accepted by LSI in multiple formats for black & white books and one format for color books. As file submission formats differ between black & white and color books, please take note of the differences. No partial revision will be accepted; for example: only one page has been corrected and only that revised page is uploaded the entire interior must be resubmitted. A cost for revisions to the cover or the book block will be incurred. (see Attachment A Fee Schedule) Note: Revisions must be submitted prior to placing any orders. 8 CERTIFIED DIGITAL TITLE SUBMISSION BLACK & WHITE AND COLOR BOOKS In addition to standard digital file submissions, LSI offers Certified Digital File Submissions for high volume publishers with digital files that can be processed in a highly automated fashion. This option provides lower pricing and faster turnaround times. Certain restrictions apply to qualify for this program. To be considered for digital certification the publisher should contact their LSI Sales or Client Services Representative. MAN_US Color Book Addendum Page 9 of 9
