1 Biology 107: Cellular and Molecular Biology SPRING 2005 Instructor: Cecil Shikiya, M.S. Office Hours: by appointment only (usually during break or after class) Website: Lecture: Wednesdays 7-9:50pm at L-105 Lab (38407): Tuesdays 7-9:50pm at L-208 Lab (38408): Thursdays 7-9:50pm at L-208 Course Objectives: As described in the schedule of classes, in this class you will learn the following: The principles of bioenergetics, molecular structure and evolution and cell morphology, anatomy and physiology. genetics and immunology will also be included. This class is worth 4 units and is CSU and UC transferable. Important Dates: Last day to ADD the class:1/28/05 Last day to DROP the class without a w : 2/14/05 Last day to DROP the class with a w : 3 /21/05 Drop refund: 1/28/05 Extra Credit Due: 5/18/05 Required Textbooks Lecture Textbook: BIOLOGY SCIENCE first edition by Scott Freeman Laboratory Manual: Molecular and Cellular Biology Laboratory Manual by Miriam S. Golbert Required laboratory materials 3-ring binder, 2" for your lab book and reports. Color pencils Calculator Latex Gloves (for pig dissection), at least 2 pairs. Recommended Textbooks: Dictionary of Word Roots and Combining Forms by Borror Photographic Atlas Biology Lab 3 rd ed. By Vandergraaff Class Notes: Attendance to class is required. Class notes will be available in my website (see above). Bring them to class, it will be easier to take notes and pay attention to lecture. These notes will emphasize topics that will be included in the exam. You also need to read your book in a regular basis. 1

2 Class Conduct Don t disrupt your class neighbors. Please TURN OFF your pagers and cell phones. If you have to receive a URGENT phone call please step out of class. Don t be rude to your classmates. Read and adhere to Students Rights and Responsibilities in the schedule of classes pg 141. You will get a 10-minute class break, be prompt to return to class. No Cheating Cheating will not be tolerated in this class. Cheating is described as claiming any kind of work that you have NOT DONE as YOURS. Any attempts or actions will be addressed to the Dean of Students and it maybe grounds for dismissal from the college. In such event, an automatic F in the class will be given. DON T CHEAT, it's not worth it, be honest to yourself and your instructor. Grading % A ( ) 80-89% B ( ) 70-79% C ( ) 60-69% D ( ) 59 or below F (<420) NO plus or minuses will be used. Scores are not curved. 3 -Exams 450 Lab practical 100 Laboratory mid-terms/quizzes 50 Laboratory attendance 30 Laboratory reports 70 TOTAL 700 You will have 4 exams. Each exam is worth 150 points. ALL exams will consist of multiple choice, fill in the blanks (maybe short answers). The final or exam 4 will be given according to your final schedule of classes (Check also the Tentative Schedule of Classes at the end). No Make up exams! No exceptions. You will need scantrons form #882 for all exams. Make sure to bring a number 2 pencil. Extra Credit I will assign extra credit during the semester. The amount of points will be announced later. REMEMBER, this is optional you DON'T have to do it/them. I will give you plenty of time to finish it/them. Laboratory Attendance in the laboratory is required. NO MAKE UP LABS ARE ALLOWED, NO EXCEPCIONS. There will be a midterm that will cover half of the labs. A practicum will also be given at the end of the semester. This practicum WILL be cumulative. 2

3 Laboratory Reports Laboratory reports will be done in class, in rare occasions you will finish them at home. For group work, one team member will turn in his/her report to grade. All members of the team should have the same and complete information in the reports. When these reports are given back to you, you have two options: 1.-If you obtained a score below the maximum of 5, you can fix the mistakes and turn it back to me only after the midterm. The first and second re-grade will be announced through out the semester. 2.-If you return an unfixed report you will be given the same low grade that you obtained before with no chance of getting a higher grade. 3.-If you are satisfied with the score, you don t have to turn it in. H.I.T.E. If you are participating or wish to participate in the HITE program I would be more than happy to assist you in earning credit. HITE is a program to help students acquire extra experience in the classroom that will be to their advantage when transferring to another institution. REALITY CHECK and STUDY TIPS 1.-This class is geared towards biology/science majors. This class IS NOT an easy class. You have to study and spend time with the material. Researchers have studied the process of learning and they have come up with one hour of studying outside the classroom for every hour of in-class learning. This means that for this class you will have to spend at least 6 hours (3 hours of lecture + 3 hours of lab) outside the classroom studying the material. I understand that this might not be your only class, you might be taking 2 or 3 classes which might put you to hours of classes. Depending on the classes you will have to spend at least 1 hour of outside the classroom studying if the class is easy, if it isn't then you might put more hours. This will put you hours of outside the classroom learning. The time needed for this class and study time: 14 hours outside classroom studying + 14 hours of in-class learning = 28 hours of just lectures and studying The time you have: There are 168 hours in a week in which 56 hours will be used for sleeping (if not more). This leaves you with 112 hours. You spend 9 hours a week driving to different places (including school, work, shopping, etc, etc) this leaves you 112-9= 103 hours. If you work full time this will take away 40 (or more) a week, = 63 hours If you watch television and eat, you probably spend 3-4 hours a day (maybe more during the weekend). This will add up to 28 hours a week =35 hours. If you have a personal life (boyfriend, girlfriend, any significant other) this also will take time. Maybe 16 hours a week (movies, parties, go-outs, etc, etc) this will leave you with 35 hours -16 hours =19 hours left a week. By the time you REALIZE that you didn't have enough time to study, you are about to take final exam. 3

4 Remember that going to school is a FULL TIME JOB, and you should treat it as such, the only difference is that YOU are paying to go to work. If you don't perform well, you are wasting your time and money. If you apply yourself and study the way you should study, you are making an investment in a Company that won t let you down, YOURSELF Inc. 2.- There is a strong correlation between missing lectures and labs and doing poorly in class. Make sure you attend class, lectures and lab. 3.-Seek help soon. Don't wait until a day before the final to get a tutor. They are willing to help you and the early the better. You can find them at MESA and TLC lab. 4.-In the same way you leave your work problems at work, leave any other problems not related to this class where they belong. 4
