1 Kenmore Soccer News Volume 10, Number 11 Kenmore/Tonawanda, New York December 2016 Open Futsal Play to Begin on January 7th Open Futsal play will begin on Saturday January 7th at Buffalo State College, with U-9 through U-12 players participating on Saturdays, and U-13 and above players participating on Sundays. We have invited players from some other area clubs to increase the competitive level. Open play means that teams will be chosen each week among the players who appear. Time blocks will be set up by age group, and schedules will be posted to the web site before the holiday break. Futsal is a player-driven game that focuses on fast play, movement without the ball, and quick transition. It is designed to self-teach the fundamentals of soccer, and is a professional game throughout many areas of the world. Although relatively new within the United States, it is gaining in popularity and has been recognized by United States Youth Soccer as a critical building block in player development. Since teams are chosen from the players who come each week, there is no commitment for attendance, but we hope that many of our players will want to join in at each session. As with our various Academy programs, there is no added cost for the Futsal program. Some Indoor Schedules to be Modified We will be making changes to the indoor schedules for several teams due to conflicts that have arisen for players and coaches, as well as some changes in gym availability. If your team is affected, you will receive a blast through the club web site when the revised schedule is posted. As a reminder, if you are unable to attend the scheduled session for your team, you can attend sessions for other teams in your age group, or in adjoining age groups, by letting your coach and the other coach know. 1

2 Register Now for Travel and Academy On-line registration remains open for the season. Returning players who re-registered by July 15th were guaranteed placement on a Kenmore Soccer team. We have begun to backfill spots with new registrants. As we previously shared, the United States Soccer Federation has changed the age group cutoffs to a calendar year basis for the season. Players will still be allowed to play up, but players born between 8/1 and 12/31 will be losing a year of youth eligibility and having to skip a year. No one will know the actual impact until we have all of the registrations; however, you can request a specific team or coach (or request not to be on a specific team or with a specific coach) as part of the on-line registration process. We continue to welcome dozens of new players, many of whom are moving to Kenmore Soccer from other area Clubs. 3 Kenmore Soccer Players Recognized Congratulations to all of the Kenmore Soccer Club players who participated in the recent scholastic soccer season. Many of our players received recognition for their play. At Kenmore West, the following boys were honored: Matthew Baldwin: Defensive MVP Trey Wojnar: Defensive MVP Jack Reilly: Offensive MVP Val Mawi: MVP Sang Chin: Blue Devil Award Under 10 Kenmore Niagara Elite Boys Roll Through Sahlen s Tournament The Under 10 Kenmore Niagara Elite Boys team swept through the competition in the recent indoor tournament at Sahlen s Sports Park. The boys began the day with a 2-0 victory over Rush Canada, and followed that up with a hard fought 3-2 win over West Seneca. With only a 5 minute break between games, they tackled a tough squad from Erie, Pennsylvania and downed them by 5-0. Their final game was against the WNY Flash Academy. Playing their 4th game in just a 5 hour time frame, the boys nonetheless prevailed by a score of 2-1. Their record gave them the championship in their first local competition of the season. 4 Project Play - Serious Medicine for Kids, Sports By John O Malley, PhD Much has been written about the drop in the number of children playing sports in our nation. Studies show that around 70 percent of kids drop out of organized sports by age 13. Research on why kids play sports demonstrates that the main reason, by far, is fun. Kids also want to improve their skills and make friends. When asked why they quit sports, kids consistently say It wasn t fun anymore, I wasn t good at it, and too much pressure to win. Do kids want to win? Certainly they do, but winning isn t the be all and end all. We already have a generation of losers, because they re not playing. They are not getting sufficient physical activity, whether it be from structured sports or unstructured play. Today s kids may be the first generation in history whose life expectancy is less than that of their parents, said Dr. David Katz, public-health expert at Yale. Around 35 percent of children between 5 and 17 are overweight or obese. Left unchecked, health care spending could reach 20 percent of U.S. gross domestic product by 2030, according to one analysis. Our kids are physically inactive and we must get them playing again. Tom Farrey, ESPN journalist and executive director of Sport and Society, a program of the Aspen Institute, has introduced an initiative that could be a real game changer. Project Play is a multi-stage effort to help sport build healthy communities, starting with access to quality sport activity for all children. Project Play is an eight-point program designed to attract kids back into sports and play: Ask the kids what they want; re-introduce free play; encourage sport sampling (more options mean more kids will find a sport they like); revitalize leagues; think small (identify small parcels of land that are more accessible and less expensive to acquire and maintain. One wonders if the Lackawanna County Land Bank holds promise here.) I talked with a gentleman in South Scranton about small empty lots in his neighborhood that could be used for sports by kids in their own neighborhoods. Also, design for development. The U. S. Olympic Committee has embraced the American Development Model to unify national governing bodies and community programs in keeping Americans in sport longer. USA Hockey pioneered the model that combines sport, play, education and health based on a child s capacities. Since the USOC s announcement, all 48 national governing bodies have endorsed ADM. And, train all coaches. Arguably, the coach is the most important variable in a kid s sport experience. It is imperative that coaches be properly trained and motivated. One study found that only 5 percent of kids who played for trained coaches quit the next year; the attrition rate was 26 percent otherwise. In the United States, coaching leaders worry that requiring training will chase off volunteers, but just the opposite has happened with USA Hockey. The time has come to increase the number of credentialed coaches. Finally, emphasize prevention. Parents want their children in venues that provide physical and emotional safety, free of bullying and abuse. Project Play is a blueprint for success and steps are being taken to implement it. For example, on Tuesday New Orleans will conduct a town meeting to discuss the targeted use of sports-based youth development... 4
