In this PAL Packet you will find a short activity for you and your child to do. Please do the activity and The Back Page this evening. Then sign your name on The Back Page and have your child return it tomorrow. Remember, parents are a child s first teacher. 3 FACT FAMILIES Parent Pointer Fact families show the relationships between mathematical operations. This activity involves the use of fact families to show the relationship between addition and subtraction. Fact families are used in upper grades to show the relationship between multiplication and division. Fact families are very useful in real life. In math, they are used to check equations. Accountants and bankers use them in their daily financial transactions. Math in the Home, on the Go, and for the Fun of It DIRECTIONS: With your parent or guardian, read the What is a Fact Family? page. Then do the activity on the It s a Fact You Can Make a Fact Family! pages to find a fact family using a set of 3 numbers. Some numbers may be large, but you can do it; it s a FACT! 4 What is a Fact Family? Fact families are number sentences that relate arithmetic operations, such as addition and subtraction. For example: = = = = 3 All 3 numbers in each number sentence are the same. Each fact family has two addition and two subtraction number sentences. 5 It s a Fact You Can Make a Fact Family! Needed: scissors and a pencil Look at the triangles below. The first one shows the numbers 3, 9, and 12, each in a different corner. The second one shows the reverse side of the triangle showing the addition and subtraction fact family for the three numbers. Look at the triangles on the next page. There is a number in each corner of the triangles. You are going to create fact families using the three numbers on the triangle you choose just as in the example below. Remember, each fact family has two addition and two subtraction number sentences. 3 Front = = = 9 12 Back 9 = 3 Directions: * Cut out all the triangles on the next page. * Place the triangles upside down on a table. * Have your parent or guardian choose a triangle. * Have your parent or guardian use the three numbers on the triangle chosen to write all four number sentences in that fact family on the back of the triangle. * Now it s your turn to choose a triangle and write the number sentences. * You are finished when number sentences have been written for the numbers on all the triangles.
