3 Welcome to East Lothian Works Adult Learning Opportunities We offer a wide range of learning opportunities for adults in East Lothian to develop skills and knowledge which help gain or sustain employment or access further education. This brochure details various courses available throughout the year. For up-to-date course timetables and further information please call or elworks@eastlothian.gov.uk Referrals Any agency or individual can make a referral. Please contact East Lothian Works on or elworks@eastlothian.gov.uk for more information. We arrange to meet individually with potential learners for an informal chat before they join a group. 3
4 New Opportunities East Lothian New Opportunities East Lothian (NOEL) is an employability and personal development course aimed specifically at people who are ready to progress into employment or further learning. The first half of the course focuses on personal development, in particular confidence building, identifying existing skills and goal setting. In the second half participants will complete an SQA in Employability, carry out a work placement and have the opportunity to gain certificates in Elementary Food Hygiene and Emergency First Aid. Previous learners on the course have gone on to gain employment, go to college and continue learning in the community. Course content includes: SQA in Employability Unit (SCQF Level 3 & 4) Job Search Skills Work placement (minimum 2 hr per wk x 10 wks) Confidence Building Interview Skills Integrated Literacy & Numeracy Opportunity to improve IT skills Accredited Elementary Food Hygiene Course Accredited Emergency First Aid Course Location Various venues across East Lothian Start dates September and April Times Two mornings per week, 9.30am to 11.30am for 6 months. Help is available with childcare and transport costs. Referrals Any agency or individual can make a referral. 4
5 Core Skills / Adult Literacy and Numeracy Take the first step back into learning: Everyday Reading, Writing and Maths We work closely with our partners to provide a first step back into learning for the many adults and young people who may have missed out on their own education, or who find they now need new and different skills for life today. We also offer support to people with dyslexia. We run groups across East Lothian for a couple of hours a week in an informal, learner centred environment. We offer limited 1:1 for learners not ready to start in a group. Literacy / Everyday English Getting your thoughts on paper Improve your spelling and writing skills Gain confidence in writing for job applications, work and college Build on reading skills for work, college and pleasure Numeracy / Everyday Maths Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing Fractions, percentages, decimals and metric measurements Life Skills time, money, budgeting and bills SQA Qualifications (SCQF Level 3 & 4): Communication Numeracy We work with anyone over 16 who wants to: Take that first step back into education or training Feel more confident about learning new things Brush up core skills for work Location Times Various across East Lothian Each group runs for 2 hours per week, day and evening times, term time only. 5
6 IT Skills for Work This course will offer you the chance to develop your skills in Word, Excel, Internet and PowerPoint. Other topics covered include how to sign up to Universal Jobmatch, creating an account and sending s with attachments, how to complete an online application and tweaking a CV. There is also the opportunity to work towards an SQA unit Information Communication Technology SCQF Level 3. Location Tuesdays East Lothian Works, 9-11 Lodge Street Haddington, EH41 3DX Thursdays The Fisherrow Centre, South Street Musselburgh, Midlothian EH21 6AT Duration Tuesdays 7pm to 9pm, Thursdays 10am to 12 noon Employability Skills This course is designed for learners who are looking for support to enhance their employability skills. Learners may be in work at the moment and looking for a change in career, or out of work but ready to progress into employment. Subjects included in the course are: Job Searching Creating a CV Completing application forms Interview Skills Location Various across East Lothian Duration 2 hour sessions x5 weeks 6
7 SQA Accredited Courses Communication (SCQF Level 3 & 4) The focus of this 40 hour unit is on transferable communication skills: Reading, summarising and evaluating Writing Speaking and listening For this unit, learners are expected to be able to communicate with others at a straightforward level and may require some support to carry out these activities (particularly for Level 3). This qualification is at an equivalent level to National 3 and National 4 English. Level 4 is the minimum requirement for many (but not all) apprenticeships, jobs and college courses. Numeracy (SCQF Level 3 & 4) This unit is about using straightforward numerical skills in everyday settings that involve graphical information, calculations, and solving problems. Learners will carry out numeracy activities that involve: Using numbers, carrying out calculations, and drawing conclusions from your answers Making measurements with instruments with scales Extracting and interpreting information using tables, graphs, charts, or diagrams Conveying information through tables, graphs, charts, or diagrams To achieve the unit, learners need to demonstrate that they have all the skills in the unit. This qualification is at an equivalent level to National 3 and National 4 Numeracy. Level 4 is the minimum requirement for many (but not all) apprenticeships, jobs and college courses. 7
8 Building Own Employability Skills (SCQF Level 3 & 4) This 20 hour unit is designed to prepare learners for the world of work. It is aimed at helping acquire the skills needed in order to gain employment. These skills include: Finding out about job opportunities Contacting an employer Interview skills Applying for jobs including application forms Successful learners will demonstrate all skills in the unit. Evidence will be gathered in a folio of work and as part of the assessment learners will complete a simple application form and mock job interview. Certificate of Work Readiness (SCQF Level 4) Specifically for learners who can demonstrate they are ready for their first experience of the world of work, but need some support. The qualification is designed to help candidates meet the requirements of employers and shows them at a glance, from a CV or job application, that the candidate is work-ready. The qualification is made up of five units: Responsibilities of Employment Dealing with Work Situations Skills for Customer Care Practical Work Place Skills Personal Development: Self and Work Included in the certificate is a work experience placement. This will be negotiated through discussions with the learner, employer and learning provider. Location Various across East Lothian 8
9 Customer Service Principles & Practices (SCQF Level 5) This SQA Customer Service Award is a short, compact award which helps learners to develop the fundamental skills, personal qualities and knowledge essential in providing excellent customer service. In particular: Effective communication and listening skills How to create a good impression with customers Dealing with customers (including customer dissatisfaction) Understanding why good customer service is vital to organisations This unit is suitable for learners who are employed in, or are interested in, dealing with customers effectively and is applicable across many industry sectors; a wide range of private and public organisations; as well as the voluntary sector; charities etc On successful completion of the unit the learners will able to: Create a positive impression for the customer Deal with customer needs Learners must have English/Communication SCQF Level 4 as an entry requirement. Location Various venues throughout East Lothian Duration 2 hour sessions x10 weeks 9
10 Skills for Work These courses are designed to give learners the opportunity to explore vocational pathways into specific skills for work subjects including: Early Education & Childcare Introduction to Health & Social Care In partnership with Edinburgh College each course provides learners with the following: SQA units in relevant subject at SCQF Level 4 Accredited Emergency First Aid Accredited Elementary Food Hygiene Child Protection Awareness sessions Adult Literacy and Numeracy Support Registering as an Edinburgh College student Crèche and Transport costs Location Various venues in East Lothian Duration 2 hour sessions 10
11 Short Courses Preparation for Elementary Food Hygiene For learners who want to work in a kitchen environment but don t have the confidence to go for the Elementary Food Hygiene Certificate. Provides learners with an insight into what is involved in the certificated course. Subjects include: An introduction to food hygiene The dangers of bacteria Food poisoning and its prevention Personal hygiene Working environment Working habits and cleaning practices Through completion of this course, learners will gain the knowledge and confidence to consider sitting their Elementary Food Hygiene certificate, which provides valuable skills to enter the job market. Preparation for driving theory test This course is designed for learners who are not quite confident enough to sit their driving theory test. Learners will be provided with knowledge and understanding of the following: Highway Code Traffic Signs Hazard Perception Through completion of this course, learners should feel more confident to take the first steps towards driving. Location Various venues throughout East Lothian Duration 2 hour sessions x4 weeks 11
12 Get Ready for College This course is for learners thinking about going to college, but their heads are full of questions and worries. The course is designed to give an insight into what is expected from college life and covers subjects such as: Managing and organising course work Planning and writing essays Smarter researching Working in study groups Through completion of this course, learners should feel more confident and ready to take steps towards further education. Location Various venues throughout East Lothian Duration 2 hour sessions x4 weeks Lip Reading Lip reading groups are available for people who are hard of hearing. The groups provide an opportunity for learners to see and recognise some of the speech they cannot hear, boost confidence, share tips with others that may help learners to cope with hearing loss and find out about alerting and listening devices, communication tactics and hearing aids. Location Various venues throughout East Lothian Duration 2 hour sessions x10 weeks 12
13 English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) English for Speakers of Other Languages courses are offered at a variety of levels and venues to suit the abilities of all learners. In addition to improving your skills in the use of English, you will have the opportunity to prepare for SQA qualifications and to progress to a higher class as your skills develop. Location Haddington, Dunbar, Musselburgh, North Berwick and Prestonpans ESOLwithus The ESOLwithus group provides an opportunity for ESOL learners to meet new people, make friends and learn about the services and facilities that East Lothian has to offer. In addition, the group look after our ESOL website ( regularly updating it with news and competitions. Location Musselburgh (The Fisherrow Centre) English for Speakers of Other Languages (Intermediate 2) The Intermediate 2 English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) course is for candidates whose first language is not English and it assesses the four skills of speaking, writing, listening and reading. The topics and tasks covered are relevant to learners and are related to everyday work, study, community and social situations. It also offers people an introduction to various aspects of everyday life in the UK. The qualification is made up of one set unit Everyday Communication and one of two possible units Work or Study Related Contexts. Location Musselburgh 13
14 Supported Employment As well as supporting disabled adults (age 20 and over) into paid jobs, Support Employment Services provide employability training and work experience placements designed specifically to help individuals gain the knowledge, skills and experience required to improve their employability. We also work closely with our internal partners to promote the wide range of adult education opportunities and employability courses they currently offer. In addition, the service supports employers who currently employ staff with disabilities or who are considering this step. We can provide both employer and employee with advice, guidance and support to tackle barriers, encourage personal development and ultimately sustain employment. 15 Short Courses for Learners with Additional Support Needs Introduction to working in hospitality This course provides learners with an introduction to the world of hospitality. Subjects include: Reading and writing menus Numeracy support: time, handling money, adding up items from the menu A visit to a well established café to compare customer service Introduction to basic food hygiene standards Life Skills This course is for learners who may be thinking about moving out of home to live independently with support. Subjects include: Managing your money Reading bus timetables Shopping to a budget Time Through completion of this course, learners should become more confident in tackling everyday difficulties with regards to independent living. Location Various venues throughout East Lothian Duration 2 hour sessions x4 weeks 15
