1 Department of English and Foreign Languages Georgia Regents University SPAN 1002: Beginning Spanish II Fall 2013 Dept. of English and Foreign Languages: Prof. Moniqua Acosta-Heyman Allgood Hall E-336, Available by and during IN Office Hours: Tuesdays, 9:00-11:30 and by appointment as needed COURSE MATERIALS: COURSE DESCRIPTION: LEARNING OBJECTIVES: PLACEMENT EXAM: Cuadros. Introductory Spanish. Volume 2. (textbook and online lab and workbook manuals) We will be covering Chapters 6 through 10 in this course. Available in the bookstore, or online as an ebook with purchase of workbook materials. Fundamentals of listening, speaking, reading, and writing Spanish in a proficiency based classroom. Introduction to Spanish speaking cultures. A continuation of Spanish Students admitted provisionally with CPC deficiency in foreign languages may take this course to satisfy the foreign language CPC requirement. Not open to native speakers. Heritage speakers should take the placement exam. Prerequisite(s): SPAN 1001 or placement. Students will be able to exchange, elicit and describe information such as the following: *Narrate a simple story in the past concerning daily activities *Exchange basic personal information, such as name, home, where one lives, ages, occupation, etc. *Describe a person s family and relationships *Items and activities associated with the school *Daily personal activities, including time and days of the week *Describe people and objects *Express basic desires and preferences *Make comparisons *Order a meal and shop for food *Vocabulary expands to include living quarters, body parts, food and clothing Student should achieve a proficiency of Novice-High on the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Scale If you have had Spanish in high school or lived or studied abroad, you may wish to take the placement exam and earn credit for the courses you place out of. For example, if you place into Spanish 2002, you will receive credit for the Spanish courses you skip (Span. 1002, 2001) upon completion of Spanish 2002 with a C or better. There is a fee required for placing the courses for credit on your transcript. Credit through placement varies and each case must be evaluated individually. Please see the secretary in the Department of English and Foreign Languages if you are interested in taking the placement exam (it takes about an hour). It is offered at specific times during the first two days of classes, so you don t want to miss it. We need to determine your level so that you may drop and add the appropriate course BEFORE drop/add period ends (the first three days of class). After you have completed the course, it is your responsibility to ask the secretary to verify

2 your course completion and grade; then you must complete the paperwork, pay the fees, and take the form to Student Records. GRADING CRITERIA: Oral Exams 20% (or 10% each) PARTICIPATION 15% Centro (Online homework) 5% Written exams 40% (or 10% each) Two-part Final Exam 20% GRADING SCALE: A B C D 0 59 F ATTENDANCE POLICY: Learning a foreign language involves mastering new techniques of communication through constant practice. Irregular class attendance will inevitably lessen your success as a language student. Moreover, your failure to keep pace with the rest of the class will affect the progress of the class as a whole. A student is allowed NO MORE THAN FIVE (5) ABSENSES. The student s grade will drop 1 point for each absence beyond 5. A student who misses more than six (6) will receive a failing grade (F) for the course. Two tardies are considered one absence. No eating is permitted during class period and no guests are allowed. Only those persons registered for the course are allowed to attend class. All cell phones must be turned off or on silent mode, and SENDING TEXT MESSAGES DURING CLASS IS NOT PERMITTED. Students are also not permitted to drift in and out of class. All absences, regardless of reasons, are considered in applying the attendance policy. However, absences may be classified as excused or unexcused for purposes of allowing make-up work. With appropriate written documentation, the following absences may be classified as Excused for permitting make-up work: Illness or emergency medical treatment for self or immediate family Unavoidable jury duty Employment-related training or special assignments, official University business Military Reserve or Active Duty obligations Arrangements and guidelines for make-up work are at the discretion of the instructor. Maintain a clear channel of communication with your instructor! Good attendance and good grades generally go together. If you are absent, you are expected to call or a fellow student to obtain assignments so that you return to class prepared. For example, if you miss class Tuesday and there's a test scheduled Thursday, you are expected to take the test when you return to class Thursday. Take a moment at the end of class and exchange names and phone numbers and addresses with at least two other students! (You may also use the

3 function for other students under My Courses online.) No guests are allowed. Only those persons registered for the course are allowed to attend class. Students are not allowed to drift in and out of class to visit the restrooms or other places during class time, including tests. PARTICIPATION POLICY: CENTRO HOMEWORK: Students are required to participate in class, prepare exercises and homework BEFORE CLASS as instructed, and have chapter topics covered before arriving to class so that they may be able to ACTIVELY participate in class activities. Students will be expected to speak in Spanish AT ALL TIMES, especially during designated oral practice sessions. Cell phones MUST be in silent mode at all times, and the penalty for using a phone during class (EVEN FOR TEXTING) will be expulsion from the day s session which will count as one absence. Class preparation means that you are prepared for each class (homework is completed BEFORE class begins, vocabulary is memorized, etc.). Class participation means answering questions, reading aloud, participating in oral and written exercises, and the like. The quality of your oral response in the classroom--that is, your pronunciation and comprehension--will be part of your class participation. Mutual respect and courtesy are fundamental. Disrespectful, rude, or disruptive behaviour are not tolerated (i.e. making rude remarks to the instructor or to other students; whistling, snapping, or screaming HEY to get the attention of the instructor; interrupting classmates during in-class practice, causing disruption or distraction, etc.). Any homework assignments (not including online assignments, which are part of your lab grade) are collected in class by the instructor. No late work is accepted. The Centro workbook and lab book are online. The workbook and lab book exercises need to be COMPLETED AND SUBMITTED before class begins. Students may do exercises at home or on campus, but late assignments will not be accepted under any circumstance. Exercises for each chapter must be completed BY TEST DAY, no exceptions. There will also be homework assigned from the textbook which may be completed online using the ebook. This will often include videos and other media. Please refer to the calendar in Centro for more specifics on assignments. If you are having technical difficulties with the website, the best course of action is to contact the company directly through . You can do this by clicking on the link Technical Support on the homepage of the site. In regards to other homework, flash cards are most helpful when studying for vocabulary. To make your own flash cards, either buy pre-cut blank cards available at the bookstore, or cut your own from 3 X 5 cards. Then write the Spanish word on one side of the card and on the reverse side sketch a picture of the item (and perhaps the English word in small print at the bottom, particularly if you can't draw it!). That way you associate the Spanish with the item or concept. Interactive flashcards are also available on the Centro website. LABORATORY DAYS: Every MONDAY class will be held in the Foreign Language Lab in Allgood Hall E-365. These are normal class days and regular attendance and participation is required. These days are not the same as the online lab book exercises, which are required homework. While the technology available in the lab is for our use during class time, you MAY NOT use computers during class time unless instructed to do so. Using the computers for

4 personal reasons during class will result in removal from class and a marked absence. We appreciate your cooperation in treating the lab equipment with care during our class time there. ORAL EXAMS: EXAMS: Since oral communication is an integral element of learning a foreign language, 10% of your course grade will come from an oral exam, one-on-one, with you and your instructor during the last week of classes. Guidelines and study guides will be given to you later in the semester. It is your responsibility to make sure that you come to your scheduled interview appointment. Chapter tests are comprehensive, meaning they will draw on material presented in previous chapters, as learning a language is a cumulative process, but will mainly focus on new material presented in each chapter. A chapter test will last for an entire class and will consist of a listening and a written part. Expect a test every two weeks and consult the course calendar given to you by your instructor for test dates. Test dates and content are subject to change if the instructor feels it is necessary. The student may drop the lowest test grade if, AND ONLY IF, all exams are taken. Failure to complete all 4 regular exams will result in an inability to drop the lowest grade. The final exam grade may not be dropped. Students will not be allowed to leave the classroom during a quiz or test, so please visit the rest rooms before class. 5 Extra credit: Your primary concern in this class should be to receive the full credit for regular exams and class activities, and it should therefore be understood that there will be NO EXTRA CREDIT given. Exceptions to this rule may be made throughout the semester if it appears that extra credit could be of use to the students. HOWEVER, these extra credit activities WILL NOT include festivals, fairs, tertulias, or other events that may cause schedule conflicts for certain students. Any extra credit, if given, will require your time and participation, and will be judged accordingly. DO NOT ASK FOR EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES. Any request for extra credit will be ignored and denied, and may affect the decision regarding future opportunities for extra credit. Free tutoring and the Language Resource Center (LRC): Free tutoring in all foreign languages is offered to students currently enrolled in foreign language classes at ASU. The tutoring schedule will be posted in the Department of English and Foreign Languages (AH E227) and the Language Resource Center (AH E365) by the second week of classes. A student who fails a test or a major assignment must attend a tutoring session before the next scheduled assignment or test. Tutors may not be available in the summer. The LRC has a collection of movies and reading materials that may be used when the center is open for tutoring. Students may check out books but not AV materials. Foreign Language and International Activities: The French, German and Spanish clubs, as well as Alpha Mu Gamma, will have several activities through the semester. Your instructor will give you a calendar of planned activities, once it is available. Alpha Mu Gamma: Alpha Mu Gamma, the national collegiate foreign language society, has a chapter at ASU. Students with two A's in unrepeated courses in the same foreign language, and at least a 3.0 overall GPA will be invited to join. The chapter holds events open to all students throughout the year. Your instructor will give you information about these events. ENTERING THE BOOK KEY AND COURSE CODE Enter the book key and course code to complete the enrollment process. You may already have a book key, or you may need to purchase a book key. Depending on your situation, use one of the procedures below. If you activated the book for a previous course, you can start at step 5 of I already have a book key below. Once you have completed this step, the system lists the course and book on the Student Workstation home page. To enter additional books, enter a book key in the Enter field and click Go. Note: Book keys can only be used once. Your book key will become invalid after you use it. I already have a book key 1. Go to and click LOGIN. 2. Enter your username and password and click Log in. 3. 9 Class Participation Grading Rubric Participation in class involves a number of variables, listed in the rubric below. Grades for participation will be assessed out of 50 possible points approximately every two weeks, and you may ask your instructor for your participation grades at any time. Your instructor reserves the right to administer homework assignments or pop quizzes in order to assess students preparation. These grades also form part of your participation grade. The use of cell phones, pagers, mp3 players and all other electronic equipment during class is prohibited unless otherwise indicated by your instructor. All equipment must be turned off in the classroom. Any evidence of cell phones (use, ringing, buzzing, etc.) and similar equipment use will result in removal from class with a marked absence.
