3 [4] INTRODUCTION The author travelled to Papua New Guinea (PNG) on the 2 November He visited the Geology Department of the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG), the Department of Minerals & Energy (DME), and its Petroleum Branch in Port Moresby, between 4-22 November. The main objectives of this PNG visit were to present two courses on Petroleum Geology and Geophysics, a Basic Course at the University of Papua New Guinea and an Advanced Course at the Department of Minerals & Energy. The UPNG course was presented in response to a request made to the Deputy Director while on an official visit in PNG the previous August. The DMP course fulfilled Training Task 91.PN.16: A further course in Petroleum Geology to follow-on from a first course held in Port Moresby in ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The courses were funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) who provided travel funds and the salary of the author at the SOPAC Secretariat. Generous donations of printed material and employee time were made by the Petroleum Branch of DME, and refreshments by the Customs Branch in whose conference room the course was held. Permission from a Calgary consulting colleague, Larry Herd to include several figures on reflectivity, convolution, filtering, NMO, and stacking is gratefully acknowledged. Thanks are due to Shell Oil, United Kingdom for providing training brochures. Some of the credit for the success of the courses should be given to: Stanley Pono, Geophysicist, Petroleum Branch of the DME, for assisting in instructing during the mapping exercises and for printing of the many seismic sections required, Matilda Lohia, Secretary, Petroleum Branch of the DME, for cheerful and enthusiastic typing of outlines, exam papers, evaluation sheets and certificates Mark Mandibi, Engineer, Petroleum Branch of the DME for faithfully driving The author daily and providing other logistic support. 4 [5] Much appreciated also was the refreshments and snack course windup given by the Director, Robin Moaina, and the guest privileges for daily lunch at the Avia Club and at the weekly Petroleum Club meetings, arranged by Mick McWalter, head of the Petroleum Branch of the Department of Minerals & Energy. 5 [6] UPNG COURSE: PETROLEUM GEOLOGY & GEOPHYSICS Participants Participants included twenty 4th year Geology students plus four physics students (*) who all received grades for their exam and assignments. Contents of the Course Fourth Year Honours B.Sc Geology students had been attending a three week course in Geophysics given by Stewart Gunson of the University of Western Australia; he had been concentrating on the theory and practice of (mainly mining) geophysics. The three day course module presented by the author covered the basics of oil prospects, the acquisition, processing and interpretation of geophysical data, seismic stratigraphy, and concluded with two days of seismic mapping of two case histories from Northern Canada and the Gulf of Papua. Participants Assessment Marks were assigned for class work and questions based on the course were supplied for a later examination prepared by Stewart Gunson. Final class average was 58%. A copy of the class grade sheet is included in the Appendix. Recommendations This course seemed to be well appreciated by the Department and the students. It could well be [NR53 - Barclay]

6 [7] repeated every second year. Careful planning and on-site coordination is required for such a short course. DME COURSE: ADVANCED PETROLEUM GEOLOGY & GEOPHYSICS Contents of the Course The course consisted of six days of lectures and classroom self-assessment assignments on petroleum geology, seismic acquisition, processing and interpretation, seismic stratigraphy, a written examination and three days of seismic mapping of two surveys from Northern Canada and the Gulf of Papua. A complete list of the course material is contained in the Appendix Participants Assessment Each participant was assessed on their performance through five assignments (60%), two interpretation and mapping exercises (20%) and a two-hour examination, copies of which are contained in the Appendices. Final results of the course were distributed to the Director of DME and the Human Resources Departments of the participating oil companies, with a copy to the Director of the Secretariat for advice to the member country. In the course, high, low and average marks for the exam were 75%,50% and 65% respectively, and for the practical - 88%, 78% and 81 %. The class was attentive, motivated and committed. 7 8 Recommendations Originally, a three week course was intended and it was to be held at Mendi, close to current petroleum development activity in the Southern Highlands Province, by two lecturers, the author and John Collen of the University of Wellington. It was meant to have had on-site logisitic support provided by the SOPAC Training Coordinator and his secretary, as was the case in the previous "Basic Petroleum Geology" course in PNG (June 1990: See Training Report 34). In the event, John Collen withdrew late, for indeterminate reasons; a wise decision was made to hold the course in Port Moresby, and due to the unfortunate timing of the Suva "Concrete Workshop" the week before the start of the two courses, the Training Coordinator and his secretary were unable to attend. Security in Port Moresby was found to be restrictive on visitors on an extended stay. All hotels, clubs, residences and offices have and require security staff; conventional wisdom suggests avoiding being on the streets at night and travelling alone in cars. It is therefore highly recommended that future courses or workshops of longer than a few days be supported by at least two SOPAC staff, not only to ease the logistical procedures but for security and social reasons.
