Knowledge Transfer and Discovery: Tier One Research University The Industry Affiliate Research Model Cockrell School of Engineering - Center for Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering vision is to be the premier academic research organization in all facets of oil and gas exploration and production. Faculty who impart knowledge about the world class research conducted at CPGE is an important aspect of the department's tradition of excellence, and many of undergraduate and graduate students are involved on its research programs. The department is home to the #1 Petroleum engineering graduate program and the #2 petroleum and geosystems engineering undergraduate program.
Jackson School of Geosciences, Institute of Geophysics, Gulf Basin Depositional Synthesis Project (GBDS) is an industry-supported, comprehensive synthesis of Cenozoic and Mesozoic fill of the entire Gulf of Mexico basin. The results are distributed as a digital data base that is updated regularly. The project has led to major new contributions to the understanding of the depositional history and framework of the Gulf of Mexico Basin. The deliverables for the project include a digital set of regional UTIG multi-channel seismic transects in the deep basin (traversing both U.S.A. and Mexico waters), a comprehensive GIS database, a suite of regional lithofacies and depositional systems maps generated from the data base and compilation of published information, and an extensive supporting bibliography. Knowledge Transfer and Discovery The Gulf of Mexico Basin one of the best studied basins in the world.
The Bureau of Economic Geology s Core Research Centers (CRC), located in Austin, Midland and Houston, are one of the largest repository for core and rock material in the world with combined holdings of nearly 2 million boxes of geologic material. The Integrated Core and Log Database (IGOR) is a searchable database for all CRC core and well cutting holdings. Layout rooms and processing rooms for slabbing core are available to the public. The Bureau of Economic Geology functions as the State Geological Survey of Texas
Collaborating to advance carbon capture and storage; a key technology to fight climate change and produce cleaner energy. The University of Texas at Austin is an international leader in developing carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology and is actively cooperating with the North American Energy Ministers Working Group on Climate Change and Energy created last year by the Secretaries of Energy and Natural Resources of Mexico, the United States and Canada. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) can dramatically help Mexico reach its ambitious plan submitted at the recent climate meeting in Paris to reduce 50% of their GHG emissions by the year 2050.
Cutting-Edge Scientific Energy Research Tier 1 Research University Institute of Geophysics UT Austin to Lead $58 Million Effort to Study Potential New Energy Source A research team led by The University of Texas at Austin has been awarded by the U.S. Department of Energy approximately $58 million to analyze deposits of frozen methane under the Gulf of Mexico that hold enormous potential to increase the world's energy supply. Estimates vary on the amount of energy that could be produced from methane hydrate worldwide, but the potential is huge. In the Gulf of Mexico, where the team will be sampling, there is estimated to be about 7,000 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of methane in sand-dominated reservoirs near the seafloor. That is more than 250 times the amount of natural gas used in the United States in 2013.
Knowledge Transfer and Discovery The Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) #7 supercomputer in the World- June 2014 TOP500 list Stampede is one of the most powerful and significant current supercomputers in the U.S. for open science research. Able to perform nearly 10 trillion operations per second, Stampede offers infinite opportunities for computational science and technology ranging from highly parallel algorithms, high-throughput computing, scalable visualization, and next generation programming languages.
