February 8, 2016 Dear MBE Parents and Friends, Everyone is buzzing about MBE s plans for an excellent new playground. You may have seen the new equipment displays in the school foyer this week. The kids love looking at them! Amidst all the excitement, you may have several questions that I d like to address. Why do we need a new playground? MBE recognizes the importance of child development through play. We want all children to have access to safe, quality equipment. The existing playground equipment and amphitheater are more than 20 years old. The renovation to the playground would create a play space that is not only in compliance with the current ADA Regulations (Americans with Disability Act) but also accessible by all of our student population. The renovated playground also provides a space for science and engineering exploration. How is the new playground better? We hired Kompan, one of the world s top playground supplier, to design our new equipment. They focus on strong design, high play value, safety, and long-lasting quality. Every new MBE playground piece will be ADA accessible and multifunctional. They are designed to promote problem solving, team building, science, engineering, and most of all.fun!
The new MBE playground includes:! ADA-compliant playground equipment appropriate for ages 3-12 (that means new equipment that both the preschoolers and the older kids will enjoy!)! Surfacing that meets updated safety requirements and allows all students, even those in wheelchairs, to easily access the playground and its equipment! Play pieces with spinning functions which have been shown to sooth children on the Autism spectrum! Wheelchair ramp to access the playground from the parking lot! Refurbished outdoor amphitheater that can be used as an outdoor classroom! Revitalized nature trail! Two new four square courts! An updated basketball court! Additional benches! Fencing! Landscaping! Commemorative brick pathway We are excited to bring our students and the MBE community the only play-space in the footprint of Mountain Brook s parks and recreational facilities that meet all of these criteria. How much is this going to cost? The cost of adding new surfacing is approximately $120,000 and the new equipment is approximately $150,000. The site work preparation and landscaping will cost an additional $75,000. This brings the project total to approximately $350,000.
How is the PTO going to raise the money? 1)!Your generous donations! We will be reaching out to you, MBE families who love our school, MBE alumni, and to those in the MBE community who feel passionate about providing an all inclusive play area. 2)!Donations from businesses and leaders in the MBE community. 3)!Grants that are designed to help schools achieve a more ADA compliant play area. What do you need to do? Donate! Get your friends, family and connections in the Mountain Brook Elementary School community to donate. Help spread the word about what MBE is doing for our community. This is a team effort and our goal is for 100% participation. We want everyone to go FULL STEAM AHEAD in supporting this campaign. We have a wide range of donor levels that will allow everyone to get involved! From buying a brick in honor of your child, to sponsoring the largest piece of equipment, we have something for you! All donations are tax deductible. Please check with your employer to see if they have a matching program. To donate on-line or for more information about the MBE Playground Campaign visit: Kind regards, Emily Emily Lassiter PTO President
Fundraising Goal Since 1929 Mountain Brook Elementary, the founding school within the Mountain Brook district, has been a place for children to play and learn within our community. After +20 years, it is time to build a new playground!! A playground that is ADA compliant! A playground that is designed for the 21 st century! A playground that is built to last at least another 20 years! A playground that fosters learning,"builds friendships and teaches some of life s most important lessons Together we need to raise $350,000 to build a new ADA compliant playground
Playground Cost COST ADA Compliant Playground Equipment $110,089 Preschool Playground Enhancements $16,000 Fall-safe Playground Surface $116,913 Demolition & Construction $56,836 Landscaping, Fence & Seating $50,162 Total $350,000

ADA Evaluation Guidelines for Handicap/Special Needs Usage- Every item chosen in the design for Mountain Brook Elementary School is rated ADA Accessible. The playground was designed using the 6 principles of Universal Design to create a playground that allows people of all levels and abilities to play together. These principles are: Accessible Multi-functional 360 degrees of play (play from all sides) Equipped with diverse play opportunities Clear in color and design signals Provided with special solutions for special needs when relevant There are 3 levels of inclusive play featured in the design. The activities are based on the American s with Disabilities Act s Accessibility Guidelines for Play Areas, which state that if there are an equal number of elevated and ground level activities the playground can be defined as universal design and play for all include: Ground level activities Elevated activities Multi-level activities The plan is to use either PIP (poured in place) rubber surfacing or artificial turf. These types of surfacing are both accessible for wheel chairs or other assistance devices that may be needed. It has been shown that spinning is a soothing activity for children that are on the spectrum of Autism. There are several opportunities for this action on the playground.
ADA Evaluation Guidelines for Handicap/Special Needs Usage cont.- Inclusive details for each item in the MBE design: Emerald: Opportunities for ground level and elevated activities as well as a graduated challenge over time for children to master the skills of balance and climbing. Galaxy Enif: Static and dynamic climbing choices. Children in a wheel chair can be transferred to the bivey seat and swing while others are climbing allowing everyone to play together. There is an even amount of ground level and elevated activities. This structure adds a level of difficulty to the playground which is great for older children or a graduated level of challenge for younger children. Some of the footholds can be reached at ground level and used to pull on for upper body strength. Spica s: This spinning item can hold up to five children at once. You can also sit on the base and spin making this piece ADA accessible. Custom Edge: Mixture of ground level and elevated activities allowing children to play together on the same structure.
