How do I search for an area? The easiest way is to use the 'Find My Area' wizard at the top of the text section on the left hand side of the screen. Click the Choose an area link, and then enter the name or code of your area in the box. Click on the area you require in the list that appears. The map will zoom to the area, and the chosen area will be selected. The wizard will then give you the option of extending the selection to a higher geography, and then choosing from the report options. Alternatively, to search for an area by name, first ensure that the correct geographic level is loaded (for more information on this, see the relevant 'How to...' topic). Then click the button to the top right of the map. Entering the name (or part of the name) of the area you require into the box will bring up all matching results. Click on the name of the area you would like, and then you have the option to zoom to the area. Clicking on the area will then make the selection. How do I alter the geography level I'm looking at? Click the drop-down on the bar at the top of the map. You can then choose from the available base geographies. How do I make a selection of a County Electoral Division, or other higher geographies? To make a selection that most closely represents the boundary of a County Electoral Division, you must be using the Ward geography level (For more details about how to do this, see the 'How do I alter the geography level that I'm looking at?' How To... topic). Then click the button at the top right of the map, and choose County Electoral Divisions from the 'With a geographic layer' list. The County Electoral Divsion boundaries will appear on the map in green. By clicking within one of these green boundaries, the nearest combination of Wards that make up the County Electoral Division will be selected. Please note that the County Electoral Division boundaries selection will be made on a bestfit basis of Wards. Other higher geographies, such as Regions, Public Health England Centres and Regions, NHS Area Teams and NHS Commissioning Regions, can be selected in a similar way. Page 2
How do I zoom the map? There are a number of ways of zooming the map. For example, you can use the mouse wheel or the zoom function to the right of the map to zoom in and out You can use the zoom tool by clicking and dragging to choose an area to zoom to. The button will return you to the full view of England. To zoom to a particular higher geographic area, use the button at the bottom right of the map to load up a smaller map on which you can choose the area to zoom to. There is a drop-down at the bottom of the smaller map to choose different levels of geography. How do I view a street map in the background? To view Ordnance Survey OpenSpace maps in the background, click the button on the right hand side of the map. If you have indicator data loaded into the map, you can use the slider to make the maps more or less transparent. To view other background maps, click the Layers (Raster) list. drop-down and choose from the Image How do I make a single selection using the map? Simply click on the area that you would like to select. (To change the geography of the map, or to zoom to an area, see the relevant 'How to...' questions on these topics.) A red border will appear around the selected area, and an 'Information on the selection' box will appear. From this, you can view reports and data. How do I make a selection of multiple areas? There are a number of ways of selecting multiple areas. The most simple is to hold down the 'Shift' key on the keyboard whilst clicking on areas. You can then make a selection including any number of areas within the same geography level, these do not need to be next to each other. Page 3
Alternatively, you can click the button and use the circular or polygonal selection tools. To use the circular selection tool, click at the point you want to be the centre of the circle, and hold down the mouse button, moving the mouse until the circle is the required size. Then let go of the button. To use the polygonal selection tool, click where you want one corner of the polygon to be, then click on all the other corners, and finally double click to finish. Also using the button, you can overlay boundaries for higher level geographies, by selecting an option from the 'With a geographic layer' list. The boundary for the chosen layer will then appear in green. By clicking on any part of the higher geography, a selection will be made of the nearest combination of areas that match the geography. The final way is to choose a single area, then click the 'Advanced' tab in the 'Information on the selection' box. Then choosing the 'Extend this selection' option will allow you to choose the higher geographical areas that your selection is within, or a selection within a certain radius of your selected area. How do I view data for an indicator on the map? You can either choose an indicator from the 'View An Indicator Map' option above, or if you want to choose more than one indicator, click on the button at the top left of the map. By double clicking on a theme name, you can view all available indicators in that theme. Click on your chosen indicator, and then click the map. to view the data on How do I create a report for my selection? Once you have made a selection (see the relevant 'How To...' topics for details of how to do this), you can create a report for your selection by clicking the 'Reports' tab in the 'Information on the selection' box. The 'Detailed reports' option will load a multi-page report for your selected area. If you have made a multiple selection, you can change the title of the report by typing over the name at the top. How do I create a spine chart for my selection? Once you have made a selection (see the relevant 'How To...' topics for details of how to do this), you can create a spine chart for your selection by clicking the 'Reports' tab in the 'Information on the selection' box. The 'Profile' option will load a spine chart for your selected area. Page 4
How do I change the map to see more colour ranges? With an indicator loaded, click on in the legend, and then change the number of ranges in the drop-down. You can also change the colour palette here. How do I view 2 maps side by side? Click on the button at the top right of the map. You can then load indicators, zoom and make selections in the second map in the same way as the first. How do I print or save a report? With a report open, click the button to print the entire report. Printing performance has been tested using the Internet Explorer browser, printing in other browsers may not give fully satisfactory results. To save a report, it is easiest to use a pdf printer. A number of these are available to download, one is PDFCreator, available from This then becomes another option alongside your printers. How do I export data? When you have loaded the required indicators into the map (see the relevant 'How To...' topic for details of how to do this), click the button at the top right of the screen to open a data table. Click 'Export' at the top right of the data table to export the data and confidence intervals for your selected indicator(s). If you have made an area selection as well, and only require the data for your selected area(s), tick the 'Selection only' box. How do I import my own data? To add your own data to the map (it is not possible to include user imported data into the reports), click at the top right of the screen and 'Personal data'. Choose the required geography from the drop-down, and click 'Next step' Click 'Sample file' to get a template to fill in with your own data. Add the data for your indicators in the columns to the right of the 'Code' column. Then copy the data, with the 'Code' column being the first column, and paste into the box in Local Health. Then change the 'Decimal delimiter' to 'Point', and click 'Geocode data'. The data should then appear in table form. Click 'Next Step', and you then get the option to define, for each column of data, the name, source and unit of the indicator. When you have filled this in, click 'Next Step'. Then click 'Load and Map' and your data will appear in the map. Page 5
How do I find out how an indicator was calculated? For each indicator, either when being viewed in the map, or in the list to choose from, there will be a icon. Clicking on this will give you more details about this indicator. How was estimated ward and CCG level data calculated? For some indicators in Local Health, Ward and Clinical Commissioning Group data has been estimated from the Middle level SOA data. The data was population weighted using the relevant (age, sex and time period) population of the Output Areas that make up each Ward/CCG and MSOA (Data and lookups provided by ONS). For those cases where estimation is used, there is either no source data at the relevant geography, or it is impractical to calculate actual ward level data alongside the MSOA data due to the large number of small areas that are formed by subtracting one geography from another. This would lead to a large number of cases where data would need to be suppressed to prevent disclosure of small numbers of cases for these areas that could be found by differencing. Page 6
