2 NZQF NQ Ref 1133 Version 4 Page 2 of 13 National Diploma in Aeronautical with strands in Aeroplane, Rotorcraft, Powerplant Piston, Powerplant Turbine, Electrical, Instrument, and Radio Level 6 Credits 240 Purpose This qualification is intended for people working towards the privileges of certifying the release to service of aircraft or their components following maintenance. The qualification covers the subjects required by candidates for the issue of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Aircraft Engineers Licence (AMEL) (issued under Part 66 of the Civil Aviation Rules 1990) without rating privileges. The core compulsory covers the application of knowledge in the areas of: aircraft engineering, aircraft materials, avionics, air law, human factors, mathematics and physics, and electrical fundamentals. The strands recognise skills and knowledge in the areas of: aeroplane, rotorcraft, powerplant piston, powerplant turbine, electrical, instrument, and radio. While this qualification stands alone in terms of its relationship to the licensing requirements, candidates can progress through the National Certificate in Aircraft Servicing [Ref 0171], National Certificate in (Related ) [Ref: 0381], National Certificate in (Specialist Support) with optional strands in Aeronautical Composites; Aeronautical Electroplating; Aeronautical Machining; Aeronautical Non Destructive Testing; Aircraft Furnishings and Equipment; Aircraft Mechanical; Aircraft Painting; Aircraft Powerplant; Aircraft Structures; Armament; Avionics; and Rotorcraft [Ref: 0191], and/or National Certificate in Aeronautical Engineering with strands in Aeronautical Non Destructive Testing, Aircraft Mechanical, Aircraft Powerplant, Aircraft Structures, Armament, Avionic Electrical Repair, Avionic Instrument Repair, Avionic, Avionic Radio Repair, and Rotorcraft [Ref: 0192], to reach this qualification. Special Notes It is recommended that people have NCEA Level 2 in Mathematics and English or can demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills before entering training related to this qualification. To be employed in the area of Aeronautical in New Zealand and release aircraft or their components to service following maintenance, a candidate will need to have been issued a CAA licence that has the appropriate ratings and meet the fit and proper person requirements as outlined in Section 10 of the Civil Aviation Act 1990.

3 NZQF NQ Ref 1133 Version 4 Page 3 of 13 Industry requirements are that a candidate must meet the eligibility requirements of the Civil Aviation Act 1990 and the Civil Aviation Rule Part 66 for an aircraft maintenance engineer s licence. Those undertaking the Aeroplane Strand should consider including standard 20898, Apply knowledge of pressurised aeroplanes to the, in their elective, as it may be required in some employment contexts. Unit standards and achievement standards that are equivalent in outcome are mutually exclusive for the purpose of award. The table of mutually exclusive standards is provided on the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) website: Reviewed standards that continue to recognise the same overall outcome are registered as new versions and retain their identification number (ID). Any version of a standard with the same ID may be used to meet qualification requirements that list the ID and/or that specify the past or current classification of the standard. Changes to structure and content Standards 6401, 6402, and were removed from the qualification. Four new standards ( ) were added, and standard was replaced with standards and 26964, to reflect changes in the CAA syllabuses. The Powerplant strand was split into separate Powerplant Piston and Powerplant Turbine strands. Three new strands were added covering Electrical, Instrument, and Radio. The minimum credit value of the diploma was raised from 170 or 180, to 240 credits.

12 NZQF NQ Ref 1133 Version 4 Page 12 of 13 An elective was included in each strand to enable unit standards to be accessed from a number of domains and to ensure the credit requirements for the qualification was the same regardless of the strand chosen. For detailed information see Review Summaries on the NZQA website. All new trainees will be enrolled in programmes leading to the new version of the qualification. People currently enrolled in programmes leading to the award of version 2 of this qualification may either complete that version or transfer to version 3. People intending to complete version 2 of this qualification must gain credit for expiring standard by 31 December 2012, and expiring standards 6401 and 6402 by 31 December This qualification contains standards that replaced an earlier standard. For the purposes of this qualification people who have gained credit for the expiring standard are exempt from the requirement to gain credit for the replacement standards see table below. Any person who considers they have been disadvantaged may appeal to the SSB at the address below. Previous versions of the qualification Version 2 was issued following revision to replace standard 2824 with standards and The purpose statement and special note section were also amended to clarify the intent of the qualification. Version 2 of this qualification contained standards that replaced an earlier standard. For the purposes of this version of the qualification, people who have gained credit for the expiring standard are exempt from the requirement to gain credit for the replacement standards see table below.
