1 George Washington and Abraham Lincoln General Information Class: First Grade Subject: Social Studies Lesson Title: Celebrating President s Day Grade Level: First Grade Lesson Length: 45 minutes Purpose The purpose of this lesson is: Compare and contrast George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Students will also learn about historical events. Content Objectives: 1. ELLs will become familiar with George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. 2. ELLs will investigate historical events and reasons for observing special days that celebrate individuals. 3. ELLS will create a voicethread with the class. Language Objectives 1. ELLs will preview and predict facts about the president s. 2. ELLs will discuss/list the main points about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. 3. ELLs will summarize the main points about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Culture Objectives 1. ELLs will pair with a native English speaking student to discuss George Washington and Abraham Lincoln before helping to create a voicethread.

2 State Standards NC First Grade Social Studies Objective 4.02 Explore and cite reasons for observing special days that recognize celebrated individuals of diverse cultures. Objective 4.03 Recognize and describe the historical events associated with national holidays. Objective 7.03 Use the computer and other technological tools to gather, organize, and display data. NC English Language Proficiency Standards 1. English language learners communicate for Social and Instructional purposes within the school setting. 2. English language learners communicate information, ideas and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of Language Arts. 3. English language learners communicate information, ideas and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of Social Studies Teacher Materials - A Picture Book of George Washington by David Adler - A Picture Book of Abraham Lincoln by David Adler - Electronic picture of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln (either a copyright free picture from the internet or you can create your own using a program like KidPix) - Free account on voicethread.com Activity 1 Introduction and Schema Activation. Make a K/W/L with students to see what students may already know about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Fill out the K(know) part and then the W (what they want to know) part before reading.

3 Activity 2 Assignment/Activity/Demonstration. The teacher will read A Picture Book of George Washington by David Adler. After reading the text students will participate in an Inside-Outside circle and discuss what they learned about George Washington. (Inside- Outside Circle: The class is divided into two groups: half the class forms a circle looking out (this will be the inside circle), and the other half stands in front of someone in the inner circle (this will be the outside circle). The students are asked a question. The students in the inner circle answer first while the outer circle listens. When each has finished students give a signal to indicated they are finished. Once both have shared, the teacher gives a signal and the inner circle stays in place while the outer circle rotates on person clockwise). Inside-Outside circle ideas came from: Making Content Comprehensible for English Learners: The SIOP Model (3rd Edition) by Jana Echevarria, MaryEllen Vogt and, Deborah J. Short After students have discussed George Washington create a venn diagram with George Washington on one side. Have students tell things they learned about George Washington to go in his side of the venn diagram. The teacher will then read A Picture Book of Abraham Lincoln by David Adler. After hearing the story students will participate in an Inside-Outside circle activity to discuss Abraham Lincoln. Once students have had a chance to discuss Abraham Lincoln add to his circle on the venn diagram. Activity 3 Conclusion. Go to Before getting to this point in your lesson make sure you have already created an account. 1. Click Create

4 2. Log In 3.Upload your picture of George Washington. Then upload your picture of Abraham Lincoln. 4. Click on comment

5 5. Click on comment and then the record button. Once the first child has recorded other students can come and record their voices. Students should make comments about things they learned about each president. Use the ideas on the venn diagram to help students make factual comments. Revisit the KWL and see what students learned about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln by creating the voicethread. Activity 4 Assessment. Assess students understanding of historical events and of each president by listening to their conversations during the inside-outside circle. Also, you can assess what students have learned by watching the voice thread at the end. Instructional Technology Used for Teaching Student-made Resources: Students assist in the process of making the voicethread by adding comments to the pictures about what they have learned.
