5 Teachers Instructions (1/2) Verb Cards make a list of four questions. When finished, each student takes the list and asks two other students in the class. (They ll need to keep a memo of the answers.) Then, they return to their original partner and report their findings. Activity #3: (Whole Class) The teacher draws two Verb Cards and reads them. The fist student who can make a complete sentence with both of the verbs is awarded a point. 1. Student ability: Beginner ~ High Intermediate 2. Approximate length of lesson: Varies 3. Number of students necessary: Varies 4. Preferred age/maturity: JHS, HS, College, Adult 5. Type of lesson: Varies * * * * * Language Target: Working with verbs and various grammar patterns. Activity #1: (Groups) Divide the class into groups of four and deal out six cards to each student. The remainder of the cards are placed face-down on the table. One student begins by asking any other student in his/her group a question using any one of the six verb cards in his/her hand. The student determines which tense to use. The answer must use the same verb and the same verb tense as the question. If the response is correct, the play continues with another round of question and answer. If the response isn t accurate, the student draws a new verb card from the stack. The object of the game is to be the first one to run out of cards. Activity #2: (Pairs) Give each pair of students four verb cards. Together, they Activity #4: (Groups) One student draws a Verb Card and another rolls a die. If the number on the die is 1 or 2, the student makes a statement using the selected verb in the Present Tense, if the number on the die is 3 or 4, the student makes a statement using Past Tense, if the number on the die is 5 or 6, the student makes a statement using Future Tense. Activity #5: (Whole Class Two Teams) Divide the class into two teams, Team A and Team B. Give each team half of the verb cards, and place them face down. One of the students from Team A draws a Verb Card and asks one of the students from Team B a question. The student must answer the question using the same verb and same verb tense. If the answer is incorrect, Team A get a point. Continue alternating between teams until all of the Verb Cards have been used. Activity #6: (Groups Verbs with propositions) In groups of three, Student A draws a Verb Card and makes a statement prefaced with the proposition: Before. For example, Before I came to school today, I ate breakfast. Student B draws a verb Card and makes a statement with the proposition After. For example, After I saw the movie, I went to a coffee shop. Student C puts both sentences Verb Cards [Lesson Collection Set #4 Lesson 14c]

Activity #7: (Whole Class) Simple drill, the teacher draws one Verb Card and reads the Present Tense verb as printed. The class as a whole recites all three forms. For example, the teacher reads: fly. The students say fly, flew, flown. This works well to set a timer and see how quickly the class can go through all of the verbs. Activity #8: (Pairs or Small Groups) Hand out six or seven Verb Cards to each group. Together the create a short story using all of the verbs in Present Tense. Then, students exchange their stories with another group and rewrite the new story into Past Tense. Activity #9: (Whole Class) The teacher draws a Verb Card and asks a Have you ever? question; Have you ever slept on a train? Have you ever forgotten your wallet? Students answer the question and the teacher asks a follow up question, When did you sleep on a train? When did you forget your wallet? Activity #10: (Small Groups) In groups of four or five, students have a stack of Verb Cards and a stack of Time Cards from Prism 9. All cards are face down. A student draws a Verb Card and a Time Card and makes a sentence using both; for example, On my 11 th birthday, I caught a bad cold and had to go to the doctor. This could also be done in the question format where another student in the group must answer.
