1 An Occupational Approach to Cognitive Rehabilitation Vancouver, British Columbia Thursday, September 7 and Friday, September 8, :00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Pacific Time) This two-day workshop is targeted at occupational therapists with all levels of experience in cognitive rehabilitation with adult neurological populations. It aims to equip therapists with both conceptual knowledge and practical techniques that reflect current evidence-based occupational therapy practice in cognitive rehabilitation. Small group discussions, videos and clinical reasoning activities will be utilized in order to help participants apply new knowledge. Research findings on new intervention programs and clinical case studies with a particular focus on working with adults with acquired brain injury will be integrated into the presentations. 2 Overview and introduction to cognitive rehabilitation Behavioural learning/training techniques in the cognitive rehabilitation toolbox Occupation-based goal planning with people with cognitive impairment Attention conceptualization, subtypes, systems Evidence-based treatment for attention impairment Executive function and occupational performance Evidence-based interventions for dysexecutive syndrome Self-awareness and metacognition conceptualization, subtypes, models A biopsychosocial approach to assessment and intervention for impaired self-awareness Memory conceptualization, subtypes, systems Evidence-based treatments for memory impairment Research examples and case studies in memory rehabilitation Occupation-based metacognitive interventions for enhancing self-awareness and goal performance Research examples and case studies in metacognitive interventions. Community integration and long term outcomes (if time permits) Goals and Learning Objectives: After taking part in this workshop, participants will: 1. Understand the important role of occupation in cognitive rehabilitation. 2. Conceptualize the neuropsychological basis of cognitive functions including attention, memory, executive and metacognitive function. 3. Be able to apply a repertoire of evidence-based cognitive rehabilitation techniques for specific cognitive impairments. 4. Be able to individually tailor cognitive rehabilitation programs taking into account clients goals, cognitive profiles, level of self-awareness and emotional status, with an emphasis on community participation. 5. Learn about the results of current research providing innovative approaches to cognitive rehabilitation in occupational therapy practice. 3 Presenter: Dr Jennifer Fleming Dr Jennifer Fleming is an occupational therapy researcher and academic with over 25 years clinical and research experience in the field of neurological rehabilitation. She holds the position of Associate Professor in Occupational Therapy at The University of Queensland and Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, Australia. Jenny was awarded her PhD in 1996, and has been an active researcher, postgraduate student supervisor, and presenter since then. She has published her work in over 180 publications to date including journal articles, book chapters and a text book. Jenny is a chief investigator on a Centre for Research Excellence in traumatic brain injury recovery funded by the National Health and Medical Research Centre in Australia and has attracted AUD$5.5 million in funding for her research. She is Co-editor-in-Chief of the journal Brain Impairment. Her research focuses on cognitive rehabilitation, particularly in the areas of memory and self-awareness, and improving psychosocial outcomes for people with brain injury. With the aim of translating research findings into practice, Jenny has presented cognitive rehabilitation workshops to occupational therapists across all Australian states.
