2 Introduction In this programme two jobseekers establish the merits of good preparation for the interview process. By creating a Career Portfolio, one candidate is able to demonstrate high levels of creativity, organisation and inter-personal skills which make her an attractive prospect to potential employers. Meanwhile, a second candidate finds that employment hunting is made considerably easier when time is spent preparing efficiently. Pupils need to be ready to push themselves to the foreground when applying for employment, particularly in today s competitive conditions. Using a Career Portfolio in an intelligent manner gives any applicant the opportunity to hold their structure, support their claims, demonstrate interpersonal skills and highlight relevant experience. These skills have been demonstrated in previous years through the Record of Achievement and Progress Files to some extent, however job applicants should be considering how to present a more holistic picture of their character and achievements. 4 Suggested Activities before Viewing the Programme 1. Pupils should pair up, whilst the teacher distributes a picture. Pupil A places the picture on Pupil B s back and draws the outline with a finger. Pupil B has to replicate the shape onto another piece of paper simultaneously. This can be done by giving instructions if the the shape is simple enough (e.g. star shape) rather than through physical contact if it is not appropriate. Key point: the importance of visual stimulus to help explain a point. 2. Think of your own inter personal skills, feedback to the teacher and agree on 5 or 6 skills that are common in most people. 3. Use a weighting system (10 points available in total) and for each of the nominated skills agreed in task 2. Spend the points to rate how good you think your are, e.g. 3 = excellent, 0 = awful. All 10 points must be spent. 4. Pair up with someone you know well, ask them to rate you, and exchange results. Did you have an accurate view of yourself? 4

Your skills base and experience to date in more depth than a CV 2. What sort of thing can go into a Career Portfolio? Certificates, CV, application forms, references from work, reports from school, log books from WEX, essays.etc 3. How can the Career Portfolio make a difference to your own nerves and interview technique? It can help you to stay calm. It can help you to give clear and structure responses. 4. Who could you ask for advice about what to put in your Career Portfolio? A teacher, parent, friend, former employee. 5. What is a hard skill? Key skills that you have learnt that will enable you to do the job, e.g. computer programming 6. How can you gain relevant experience in an employment field if you have none? Do a short course and include the certificate into your Career Portfolio 7. What are soft skills? How you act e.g. communication, team work.etc 8. Why is it important to show aspects of your personal life that demonstrate soft skills? Team sports, achievements and voluntary work show character and commitment, as well as the ability to work in teams. 9. Name the key interpersonal skills that employers will look to see evidence of. Team work, Problem solving, Initiative and Enterprise, Planning and Organisation, Self Management, Learning, Technology Skills. 10. Why is it important to have a well organised Portfolio with a contents page? The interviewers are busy, they need to look at it quickly, and it demonstrates your skills. 11. What should you consider before putting a Portfolio together and showing it to a potential employer? The skills set that the company need to employ, make sure your CP shows the right skills 12. What should you expect to do with your CV and Career Portfolio after an interview? Leave the CV, but take your CP, although it is always worth asking if they would like to keep it. 13. Give three tips for the application and interview process. Photocopy application forms (before and after filling them in) Review the CV and CP regularly. Write down questions asked in interviews, and your answers, to help you next time. 7
