4 Creative Methodology Our Creative Methodology course aims to provide foreign language teachers with a greater range of techniques and tools that they can employ in the classroom, whether it is in the primary, secondary or adult sector. The course focuses mostly on activities that are adaptable to a variety of learners and teaching situations as well as giving teachers an overview of the technologies available for language learning. As with all of our teacher development courses, participants get access to our collections of online resources as well as being invited to our exclusive forum where teachers can stay in touch, meet previous participants, and share ideas and materials. In addition to the methodology sessions, we give language development sessions aimed at raising the level of English of the participants as well as demonstrating more ideas and techniques. Since no course can cover the needs and situations of all participants, we also provide a series of 20-minute one-to-one tutorials where teachers can discuss their specific teaching situations, special needs, challenges, language issues, areas of interest or aspects of British society and culture. 5 CLIL Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is becoming increasingly popular in Europe as an efficient way of combining language and subject learning whether at primary, secondary or adult level. It can help motivate students to learn a language through their interest in a specific subject, or make a subject more appealing by learning a language. However, for many subject teachers who would like to, or have to teach CLIL, getting started can be a confusing and daunting prospect while more experienced teachers may also find it difficult to generate materials and activities. Our course introduces new teachers to CLIL in a clear way which avoids unnecessary jargon, while also giving innovative and practical activities that even more experienced teachers will find valuable. Further support is given by showing participants resources which can be used to find and generate material for their specific needs and subjects, access to an exclusive forum where participants can keep in touch and share materials, as well as being able to share personal experiences of CLIL during sessions. As with our other teacher training courses, we provide language development lessons aimed at increasing the level and language awareness of teachers, as well as 20-minute tutorials where teachers can discuss their specific needs and interests on a one-to-one basis. Our CLIL courses include one or two sessions of teaching practice where participants can try out new ideas in a safe environment. Week 2 Get to know your fellow teachers, the school, course and area What is CLIL? An introduction to varieties of CLIL and the challenges and opportunities it presents. Correction and feedback Ways of conducting feedback while maintaining motivation. Community Practical ideas for collaboration in and outside the classroom. Communication Practical ideas to encourage communication in the classroom. Materials design & supporting learning Techniques and resources to ensure learning. Differentiation Types of learner and its impact on the CLIL classroom. Cognitive skills Exploring the importance of thinking skills in CLIL. Online resources An introduction to a range of tools and sites to help students and teachers alike. Activity planning Tutor-assisted planning time for communicative activities. Communicative activities Teaching practice to allow teachers to try out new ideas and get peer feedback. Assessment Aspects of testing and evaluating that are specific to CLIL, with practical ideas for implementation. Lesson planning Assisted planning of a lesson incorporating what you have learnt on the course. Peer teaching Trying out a lesson that you would teach your students with feedback from other participants and tutors.
6 British Culture and Society In an increasingly international and multicultural Europe, it is essential that people of all ages are made aware of other cultures and ways of life. Our British Culture and Society course focuses on various aspects of British culture that might have not been encountered by teachers in their career, and how they can be explored in language classrooms in all sectors of education. We emphasise the ways that technology can be used to introduce and motivate students in the classroom, as well as giving access to our collection of online resources and tools, along with some useful advice on where to find interesting, up-to-date articles enabling them to discover more about culture. Additionally, teachers receive an invitation to our forum, letting them keep in touch, cooperate and exchange resources. Along with the input sessions, our course provides teachers with language development sessions as an opportunity to improve their English while being exposed to new ideas and techniques. We also provide two 20-minute one-to-one tutorials to give teachers the chance to explore specific issues with their tutors such as aspects related to their professional career, personal interests, language skills, methodology or further aspects of British life. Get to know your fellow teachers, the school, course and area. British education An overview of the British education system and recent developments. Unusual London Peculiarities and aspects of London that can be used to motivate learners. Food British food and eating habits, and how they have changed over time. Rock & pop music British songs that have mirrored and shaped society, and practical ideas to use in class. English in Britain An overview of borrowed words, regional accents and class rules. Humour & comedy The British sense of humour and how it influences culture and society. TV & celebrity Various genres of British TV programmes and the most popular ones in the last 30 years. British literature An overview of the some British bestsellers and how they can be used with students.
7 Young Learners ADC College s Young Learner course gives teachers of under 12s a wide variety of fun and innovative activities to get and keep kids interested in learning English. Drawing on our tutors extensive experience of teaching young learners, we present both more traditional classroom activities as well as those which exploit new technologies to keep students engaged. Sessions concentrate on practical activities rather than abstract theory, and participants will gain access to our collections of online resources to use with their learners. We offer the same extras as on our other teacher training courses, namely our language development sessions where participants can improve their level and awareness of English, and 40 minutes of one-toone tutorials to discuss needs specific to the teacher. Participants are encouraged to share ideas, knowledge and materials both on the course and later through our online forum, where they can post and download material, as well as establish connections with fellow attendees. Get to know your fellow teachers, the school, the course and the area. Classroom management Tips and techniques for teaching young learners more efficiently. Writing How to motivate and support young learners in their attempts to write in English. Storytelling & video activities Exploit these two powerful tools with young learners. Games & warmers Fun class activities to energise and engage kids. Grammar & vocabulary Teaching both grammar and vocabulary in a natural and effective way. Peer teaching A chance to try out an activity that you would like to use with your students, with feedback from tutors and peers.
8 Managing and Developing Self and Others Modern human resources and leadership techniques are as relevant in a school or college setting as they are in business. Our MDSO course is aimed at Head- and Deputy Head teachers of all types of educational institution, as well as any other school staff responsible for the development of their colleagues, and shows how these ideas can be integrated into a school environment. We start from the premise that in order to develop others, you must first know your own strengths, weaknesses and personality traits, and move on to explore practical ways of motivating, managing and raising awareness of colleagues character traits. Training is conducted by tutors experienced in management techniques, and informed by the latest ideas and literature. The course includes language lessons to enable participants to operate effectively in an international environment, as well as independent group work sessions for further exploration and sharing of ideas. In addition to more traditional methods of management, the course explores new electronic and online tools to facilitate more effective development. Get to know your fellow participants, the school, course and area HRM & leadership in the 21st Century An overview of issues involved in modern human resources. Individual differences & diversity How knowing yourself and others can lead to more effective cooperation. Group work Learning & development Practical ideas and resources for progressing yourself and your colleagues. Group work Work motivation & job satisfaction Ways of creating an inspiring and satisfying work environment.
