Why was the Great Sphinx created? The Great Sphinx guards the pyramids of Giza. 4. What does the word sphinx mean? The word sphinx means living image or statue. 5. The largest of the pyramids is the Great Pyramid of Pharaoh Kheops (Khufu). It is almost 486 feet tall and its base occupies 13 acres. It is said to represent the Equator. 10. How many people are believed to have been used to create the Great Pyramid of Pharaoh Kheops? It is believed that it took 2,500 men to construct the Great Pyramid of Pharaoh Kheops. 11. The King s Chamber leads to the internment location of the pharaoh, and it is 19 feet 11 inches high, 34 feet 4 inches long and 17 feet 2 inches wide. 13. How many sides are there to the Great Pyramid? There are eight sides to the Great Pyramid because the core of the structure is concave. 14. Who was the first person to see that the Great Pyramid is actually an eightsided figure and what year was the discovery made? The first person to record seeing that the Great Pyramid was an eight-sided figure was P. Groves, who was a British Air Force pilot. He flew over the Great Pyramid in What was the Queen s Chamber built for? The Queen s Chamber was the temporary resting place of the pharaoh just in case the King s Chamber was not ready when the pharaoh died. If the King s Chamber was ready when the pharaoh died, then the Queen s Chamber would be used to house the statue of the pharaoh s ka. 16. After the Pharaoh died, what was done with his heart? After death, the pharaoh s heart was put on a scale and weighed against an ostrich feather by the god Ma at. Even in death, the ka would continue to need sustenance, so the family left behind by the deceased pharaoh would continue to nourish the ka with food and water. 18. The Second Pyramid was built for the Pharaoh Khephren (Khafre), is 446 feet tall and measures 78 million cubic feet. 19. Which pharaoh was the third pyramid built for and how tall is it? The Third Pyramid was built for the Pharaoh Mykerinus (Menkaure), and it is 215 feet tall. 20. Which of the three pharaohs was considered the most beneficent? The Pharaoh Menkaure was a much more beneficent ruler and was known as a good king with a mild-mannered disposition. 21. Why did the people resent the other pharaohs who were not considered beneficent? Kheops and Khafre were resented by their subjects, because Kheops and Khafre enslaved their citizens and required them to labor at massive building projects. 22. The three pyramids form what shape and what do they align to? The three pyramids form a Pythagorean triangle and are aligned with the three stars in Orion's belt. Golden angles are found in all four corners of the Great Pyramid, all four corners of the Khephren pyramid and in two corners of the Mykerinus pyramid. 24. Other than a tomb for a dead pharaoh, what do many archeologists believe was the other purpose of the Great Pyramid? Many archeologists believe that the Great Pyramid was used to initiate novices into the priesthood. 25. Go to Worksheet 5b to complete this question. 26. Using the sides and angles of the Great Pyramid, what three things could the ancient Egyptians determine? Using sides and angles of the Great Pyramid, the pyramid can be used to create a map projection of the northern hemisphere. 29. What do the apex and the perimeter of the Great Pyramid align with?
