2 Pre-Kindergarten Family Handbook Brunswick School Welcome to the Prekindergarten school year! I am looking forward to a great year with your child! The following information will help you and your child prepare for the upcoming year. Contact Information Teacher Mrs. Tracie Klenk Educational Assistant.Mrs.Sheri Cherkowski Principal...Mr. Rodney White Diversity Education Teacher..Mrs. Pam Kellington Brunswick School Telephone Number klenk.tracie@nesd.ca Pre-K Students Brunswick Pre-Kindergarten serves qualified pre-school aged children in the Brunswick area in the community of Melfort. There are up to 16 students in the Pre-K class. Students must be at least 3 years of age by December to register. It is strongly encouraged that students be completely toilet trained. New students may apply throughout the school year and may be accepted as spaces become available. Pre-K Hours and Days of Operation Pre-K students attend school in the afternoons Monday to Friday from 1:06PM 3:36PM. It is the responsibility of the parent/caregiver to arrange transportation for your child each day. Students are to be dropped off at1:06pm and picked-up at 3:36PM. Please be sure to drop off and pick up your child at the Pre-K classroom door or outside at the end of the day.

3 Family days Family activities are planned once a month in the afternoon. Family involvement is an extremely important part of the Pre-K program. Your child enjoys and benefits greatly from having families attend Family Days. Families are strongly encouraged to participate in all the scheduled Family days. Please refer to the Pre-K calendar and newsletters for information describing upcoming family activities. Pre-K Activities Your child will be engaged in some of the following experiences during their morning at Pre-K: Play & Exploration Art Small Group Activities Gym & Outdoor Play Snack Music Attendance Children learn through play when they explore at a variety of centers, such as: blocks, dress-up, writing, science & nature, water & sand tables, play-dough, paint, puzzles, etc. Children will learn stories, songs, finger plays, & group learning activities. Children will be exploring and creating with a variety of media to express themselves. Small groups of children work on activities such as sequencing, counting, matching, language activities, etc. Activities to develop gross motor skills. Children learn about nutrition, hygiene & manners. Singing and making music help develop language skills and music appreciation. We will also be exploring with musical instruments and a variety of different musical styles. You have received a Brunswick Pre-K calendar for this school year. You will also be receiving a monthly calendar with any reminders, updates, etc. It is expected that Pre-K students regularly attend the program. Parents/caregivers are expected to contact the school , if your child will be absent. Students who do not regularly attend may be asked to withdraw from the program to make it possible for other children to attend.

4 Updated Information Please be sure to notify the school if changes in phone number, address or emergency contacts occur. School Supplies Most school supplies are provided free of charge. However, each student will need to bring: - a pair of Velcro running shoes to be kept in the classroom - a pair of outdoor shoes/boots (Velcro please) - a change of clothes to keep at school. (shirt, pants, underwear and socks). Please put in a plastic bag with your child s name on it) - a backpack x6 family picture Please label all of your child s belongings. Additionally, do not send toys to school with your child. They become lost and/or broken far too easily within the classroom environment. Outer Wear Please ensure that your child dresses appropriately for the weather. We spend time outside daily so all students must wear proper outdoor clothing. In the winter please make sure to send ski pants, toque, warm mitts and boots to school every day as we will go outside to play unless the temperature and windchill is extreme. We will do what the rest of the school does in regards to playing outside, if the rest of the school goes out for a breath of fresh air or goes out for recess we will do the same. As well, if the rest of the school stays inside for recess we will not go out to play. Snack Students are provided with a healthy snack during Pre-K. Please let us know of any food allergies or restrictions your child may have. Also be aware that Brunswick is a peanut/nut alert school. Please do not send any food containing nuts or nut products to our school.

5 Speech and Language Assistance After consultation with the parents, students with speech and/or language difficulties may be referred for special assessment. Celebration of Learning/ Home Visits Pre-K Celebration of Learning will take place twice in the school year, in November and in April. The purpose is to update the families on how their child is developing and growing in Pre-Kindergarten. Please bring your child along for this special event. This is also an opportunity to discuss what has been happening at school and some of the upcoming activities. Families can ask questions and make comments about the program. Volunteers Family members are always welcome to volunteer in our classroom. Please let us know if you are interested and when you would like to come in. The rest of the school also welcomes volunteers. Let the staff know if you would like to help in the library, another class, the staff work room or with a special event. Volunteers are greatly appreciated! Classroom Behavior It is expected that all students will listen to their teachers, follow classroom routines, and be co-operative while at school. Minor problems will be dealt with at the school level through appropriate and logical consequences. Caregivers will be notified of any major problems and solutions will be discussed together. Please remember that we are all working towards the same goal to provide the best possible learning environment for your child. By working together, difficulties can be overcome and your child will be better able to succeed!
