1 Every taught course of study leading to a UAL award is required to have a Programme Specification. This summarises the course aims, learning outcomes, teaching, learning and assessment methods, and course structure. Programme Specifications are developed through course validation and are formally approved by UAL Validation Sub Committee (VSC). They are available to prospective students through the course web page, and must be reviewed on an annual basis to ensure currency of information (for example, following any modification or local developments). Course Aims This course aims to: prepare undergraduates who are confident in communication for entry into the fashion or general media as skilled practitioners, for self-employment or for progression to further study or training; produce graduates who have a balance of intellectually and vocationally relevant skills in fashion journalism, who are innovative in their vision, with a broad understanding of the media, fashion and creative industries, and who can apply their knowledge and skills creatively to a wide range of contexts; provide opportunities for undergraduates to develop a range of personal and professional skills including software and enterprise skills; provide opportunities for further study and progression to all students. Course Outcomes The outcomes that you will have demonstrated upon completion of the course, are: 1

2 1. a coherent and systematic knowledge of the media and fashion industries, their social, legal, ethical and cultural contexts and the professional practices in your chosen area; 2. an ability to initiate, develop and realise distinctive and creative work in various forms of writing, visual, audio-visual and other digital media; 3. the application of a range of current research methods and analytical and technical skills relevant to fashion journalism; 4. critical engagement with major thinkers, debates, ethical concerns and intellectual paradigms within the field and put them to productive use; 5. an ability to apply a broad range of communication, presentation, pitching and networking skills; 6. an understanding of particular media forms and genres and the way in which they organise understandings, meanings and affects; 7. an ability to situate your practice within cultural and historical contexts and debates; 8. evidence of engagement with the Personal and Professional Development (PPD) principles as outlined in this document. Learning and Teaching Methods: The following learning and teaching methods are employed to support the integrated achievement of the course outcomes: lectures, seminars, group workshops, guest speakers, case study presentations, self-directed study, screening sessions, practical workshops, placements, peer assessment and group critiques, group presentations, learning teams. Assessment Methods: The following assessment methods are employed to assess the achievement of learning outcomes in an integrated approach: portfolios of journalism work, written reports and projects, essays, group work, self-reflection, research files, dissertation, Teeline shorthand tests, individual negotiated project. Introduction to Fashion Communication; Introduction to Cultural and Historical Studies; The Essential Skills of Journalism; Fashion Journalism in Context; Fashion Journalism for Multiple Platforms; 40 credits In Stage 2 you are required to complete 1 of which a minimum of 100 must be at level 5. Cultural and Historical Studies; Feature Treatments; Situating Your Practice: Communication Placement / Situating Your Practice: International Study Communication / Situating Your Practice: Simulated Professional Practice; 40 credits Research Methods for Media; Creating Concepts in Fashion Journalism; In Stage 3 you are required to complete 1 at level 6. Project Proposal: Fashion Journalism; Cultural and Historical Studies Dissertation; 40 credits Final Major Project: Fashion Journalism; 60 credits A 20-credit unit is approximately equivalent to 200 hours of learning time, which includes a mixture of taught time, independent study and assessment. All students are entitled to a tutorial package that consists of: one induction tutorial (group or one to one); one tutorial per term for the duration for their course of study at LCF; group tutorials as required; an appropriate level of confidentiality. Distinctive features of the course: Training for fashion journalism as a specialism within general journalism in the context of the converged media and including the core journalism tasks 3

4 and activities for delivery in print, online and for broadcast. Close ties with fashion media. BA (Hons) Fashion Journalism students secure relevant work placements at high profile traditional and start-up print and online media and with broadcasters and production companies. The course is deeply rooted in the profession of fashion journalism. The academic and associate lecturer team all operate in the fashion media. Emphasis is on the traditional skills of information gathering and of accuracy in the context of the ethical and legal landscape in which print, online and broadcast journalism operates. Teeline shorthand a key skill for effective journalism. Focus on creativity within the context of the specialist fashion environment of LCF. Key underpinning in cultural studies. Recruitment and Admissions: Admission Policy/Selection Criteria If you are likely to meet all the entry requirements, you may be invited for interview so that your suitability for the course can be assessed. You will be asked to bring a piece of writing to the interview. You will also have an opportunity to ask questions about the course. Entry Requirements Prospective students should: have minimum entry requirements equivalent of at least 280 UCAS tariff points plus passes in 5 other subjects at GCSE grade C or above, including English, or equivalent awards. Preferred subjects include English, a foreign language, Media Studies have 6.5 IELTS level or equivalent if English is not the first language. Applications from students who have prior experiential learning, formal qualifications, or a combination of both are welcome, as long as it can be demonstrated to be equivalent to course entry requirements. The course seeks to recruit students who can demonstrate: a strong interest in fashion and visual images; an enthusiasm for writing and potential to develop their writing to a professional level; an interest in current events, trends and the media.
