1 MATCHING & GRANTS SEPTEMBER 20 & 21 NOON TO NOON The 2016 Giving Challenge is presented by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County with giving strengthened by The Patterson Foundation, as well as support from Manatee Community Foundation, John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, William G. and Marie Selby Foundation, and the Herald-Tribune Media Group. Page 1
2 MATCHING How is The Patterson Foundation supporting the 2016 Giving Challenge? To strengthen giving during the 2016 Giving Challenge, The Patterson Foundation will provide a 2:1 match for contributions from new donors for donations up to $100 per new donor, per organization. Additionally, it will provide a 1:1 match for contributions from returning donors for donations up to $100 per donor, per organization. How does The Patterson Foundation define a new donor? A new donor is someone who donates to a nonprofit they did not contribute to during the 2015 Giving Challenge. How does The Patterson Foundation define a returning donor? A returning donor is someone who contributed to that specific nonprofit during the 2015 Giving Challenge. Should they choose to donate to a different nonprofit one they did not contribute to during the 2015 Giving Challenge they would be categorized as a new donor. Why does The Patterson Foundation focus on both new and returning donors? With the match to new donors, The Patterson Foundation hopes nonprofits will aspire to optimize the Giving Challenge as a vehicle to engage new donors to cultivate far beyond the Giving Challenge. The match for returning donors is designed to affirm the importance of donor retention and strengthen nonprofits abilities to build relationships with long-term supporters. How will The Patterson Foundation s match for new donors work? The Patterson Foundation will match online donations from new donors 2:1 up to $100 per donor, per organization. There is no limit to the number of individual matches a nonprofit can receive during the 2016 Giving Challenge. These three examples illustrate how this match will be implemented: Page 2
3 MATCHING cont. How will The Patterson Foundation s match for returning donors work? The Patterson Foundation will match online donations from returning donors 1:1 up to $100 per donor, per organization. The online gift processing fee and check distribution fee is 6%, standard for the industry. This fee covers credit card processing and the 3% vendor fee for KIMBIA. It will be deducted from each online contribution made with a credit card. Is my gift tax-deductible? Each online gift is 100% tax-deductible and irrevocable. All donations will be granted for unrestricted use by the chosen charities. Donors may not receive goods or services in exchange for their gifts. Is the site secure?
