1 Dear Students: Below is a handy guide to the English Department scholarship awards: who should apply for what, how, and for how much. Scholarships can be won only by English majors. Graduating seniors are only eligible for the Lawson, Nye and Samet Prizes. For all other scholarships, you must be enrolled for fall semester Please note that the Creative Writing scholarships ARE NOT the same as the Creative Writing Awards. For those, see the separate flyer from the Creative Writing Program. Creative Writing Scholarship materials must be submitted separately to Prof. Deng. Any submission that does not follow the submission guidelines will not be considered. I. General Literary/Critical Scholarships 1. Hudson (1 st, $1500; 2 nd $500) What: Best essay submitted by English majors early in their training (210, 211H, 280, most likely) Who: Freshman and sophomores, GPA 3.5 or better Send in: 3-10 page critical essay, double space, number Letters of Recommendation: None needed 2. Ward ($1000) What: Combination of Best Essay and Participation in Cultural Activities or Community Service Who: Any ENG major graduating after August of 2016, GPA 3.5 or better

Patullo (1 st, $1500; 2 nd, $1000) What: Best critical essay on a poem, poetry, or poetics Who: Any ENG majors graduating after Aug 2016 with 3.5 or better GPA Send in: Critical Essay on Poem, Poetry, or Poetics from any ENG class (any length), double space, number 4. Nye Prize (amount and number of winners TBA) What: Best essay in American Literature/American Studies Who: Any ENG major, including graduating seniors Send in: Any substantial (>5 pages) essay addressing a subject in American Literature or Studies (including hemispheric or transnational subjects) from an ENG class, double space, number Letter of Recommendation: Not needed 5. Lawson Prize ($120) What: Best Essay by a graduating senior Who: Any ENG major, including seniors Send in: Any substantial (>5 pages) essay from an ENG class, double space, number pages, Times New Roman, 12 point font Letter of Recommendation: Not needed 6. Tom Samet Award ($2,500) What: An award for students pursuing a career as an English professor Who: Senior English major with a focus in General Literary Studies intending to go to graduate school in English.

A statement of purpose (approx. 2-3 double-spaced pages) outlining intended course of research and study in graduate school. Letter of Recommendation: Yes, from ENG faculty able to speak to your capability for graduate school study. Brown I and Rust Awards Submit one essay. It will be considered for both the Brown I and Rust Awards. In the header, please specify Brown I and Rust. 7. Brown I ($2000) What: Excellent substantial, advanced essay from an ENG major Who: Any ENG majors graduating after Aug 2016 with 3.7 or better GPA (generally juniors) Send in: Critical essay less than 15 pages from ENG class, double space, number pages, 12 point font Letter of Recommendation: Yes, from ENG faculty, ideally the one who assigned your submission 8. Rust (amount to be distributed: $4000) What: Excellent substantial, advanced essay from an ENG major Who: Any ENG majors graduating after Aug 2016 with 3.7 or better GPA (generally juniors) Send in: Critical essay less than 15 pages from ENG class, double space, number pages, Times New Roman, 12 point font Letter of Recommendation: Yes, from ENG faculty, ideally the one who assigned your submission

Croak (amount to be distributed: $5000) What: Best essay by a 2ndy Ed. concentrator on any subject from an ENG class (not necessarily from 302/308/408/413) Who: ENG majors, 2ndy Ed. concentrators graduating after August 2016 with 3.5 or better GPA Send in: A Critical Essay of no more than 15 pages from any ENG class, double space, number Letter of Recommendation: Yes, from ENG or ENG Ed faculty, ideally the one who assigned your submission 2.
