1 New York City College of Technology The City University of New York Department of Communication Design CDMG 3607 Digital Asset Management Course Description This course focuses on the terminology, techniques, and equipment that store and retrieve digital assets in the media industry. Students explore, construct and demonstrate knowledge of the skills, tools, policies and procedures to manage digital assets, enabling students to understand the economic benefits of sound Digital Asset Management practices for all media businesses. Lectures also explain emerging industry standards. Students create their own digital archive, applying the principles of sound DAM to their own work and design a Direct Mail Piece using Variable Data Printing. Students are required to submit a research paper on one area of intellectual property such as copyright, trademarks or methods of controlling digital assets.. Cl hrs: 1:20; lab hrs: 2; 3 cr. Co/Prerequisites: CDMG 2317 and CDMG 2406 Course Objectives INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES ASSESSMENT Students will be able to identify and explain the Individual DAM project, VDP project and Final hardware and software components of a digital asset Exam. management system Define key terms, file formats and industry standards relating to Digital Asset Management, such as meta-data, XMP and IPTC codes and understand their importance in producing crossmedia content. Prepare a Budget and Implementation Plan for a Small-Scale Digital Asset Management System Asses and evaluate different graphic arts digital asset management software systems in the marketplace Individual DAM project, VDP project and Final Exam. 3 A class roster roll will be taken at the beginning of each class. Only two absences may be allowed. After two absences, a student may be withdrawn because of unsatisfactory attendance (code WU). Students arriving after the roll is taken will be marked late. Students may be notified at the earliest opportunity in class after they have been absent or late. After being absent two times or equivalent (2 lateness = 1 absence), a student may be asked to withdraw from the class (code W before the College drop deadline) or may be withdrawn from the class (code WU). Grading Individual DAM project 25% Research Paper 30% VDP Project 25% Final Exam 20% Total 100% Topics WEEK Lecture Topic Laboratory Exercise Homework Assignment 1 Explaining What is Digital Asset Management :Content vs. Files and What is an asset? 2 Creating the Small-Scale Archive Part I: Information Structure, Directory Structure and File Naming Using Adobe Bridge to Control Metadata across multiple images. Students search several of CityTech s Library Ebsco databases using different search techniques to understand how search term are key to databases and students also review with instructor texts and industry sites they will be using throughout the class. Students search Corbis and other photo websites using search terms provided by instructor and also visit website Controlledvocabulary.com to review resources there. Students Enter IPTC codes for a selection of images in Photoshop. Read Introduction and Chapter One, Let s Talk Terminology in. Students work at home at compiling a collection of assets from their years at CityTech that they will put on Google Drive or some other storage medium so they can have access to these files during class. Students read Chapter Two, The Anatomy of DAM in Required Text and also read article on Metadata History and timeline at tp:// g Students take digital assets they have collected and organize Feb LC 3

4 them into directories, 3 Creating the Digital Archive Part I Continued MetaData; defining the term. Different Industry Metadata taxonomies and controlled vocabularies explained and discussed such as IPTC codes. Dublin Core, XMP. Tutorial in Adobe PhotoshopXMP fields 4 Creating the Small Scale Digital Archive Part 2 Key issues regarding hardware configurations for DAM systems such as establishing a file server, drive configurations and different system configurations. Creating redundancy will be reviewed also. 5 Planning for Implementation of an Enterprise DAM system Part I: Identifying the internal team and evaluating consultant services and vendor products. Determining Scope of DAM, system integration requirements as well as organizational needs and Expectations of DAM system. Students create a controlled vocabulary for their personal digital archive on paper. Students research and determine the hardware configuration for their personal DAM system based on information provided in lecture. This research should include costs for setup. Students work in Bridge to apply controlled vocabulary metadata to their personal digital assets. During lab, students review and compare consultant sites and three DAM vendor products on the basis of information from web sites, reviews, case studies and industry sources. Read Chapter Four Why You Might Not Even Need DAM in Students continue working on their personal digital archive project by finalizing their controlled vocabulary. The vocabulary is due the following week. Read Chapter Five DAM Initiative Planning in Required Text Student write a detailed plan describing the setup they have chosen for the hardware configuration for their archive. Plan should include the budget in excel and provide redundancy. solutions. Students apply controlled vocabulary to all their digital assets Read Industry Relevant Case Study on DAM Implementation in a Media Company assigned by Instructor. 5 6 Planning for Implementation of an Enterprise DAM system Part II: Defining Policies, Hardware Selection, Scheduling Deployment, Making the Case for the DAM through creating an ROI (Return on Investment) Based on research done in lab from previous week, students create an Excel spreadsheet comparing key features of three enterprise wide software solutions Read Chapter Six DAM Staffing Considerations in Students identify one DAM software solution, contact that company via web or on the phone and arrange for a demo of that product, either virtually through a webinar, at a trade show, teleconference of in person. Attend demo. 7 DAM Human Resources Issues: What are the roles involved in initiating/implementing the DAM system and the key positions in maintaining the DAM system. Including project manager, systems manager, librarian or archivist, internal and external users, etc. Students Exchange Digital Archive Projects and evaluate each other s projects, providing feedback/commentary. Students make adjustments to Individual Archive Project based on student feedback.
