4 Informational Posters Posters are designed to attract and hold someone s attention to your ideas Your goal is to convey a clear message and support it with images and print. Emphasize your main idea: What is the one thing you want your audience to learn? All visuals and print should relate to a main idea.
5 Planning your Poster 1. Write down everything you would like to have on your poster. 2. Think of a descriptive title that indicates the main idea. 3. Decide on the categories that you need. 4. Organize the information from Step 1 into the categories from Step Think of a heading for each category.
6 Designing your Poster Sketch the poster, showing the categories and headings you have developed. Delete any information that your audience might already know Include some attention grabbers on your poster, such as a catchy and interesting statement, photographs, graphics, colours
7 Creating Effective Posters DO THIS: NOT THIS: State the main idea in the title. Summarize important information and supportive details. State the conclusion. Don t use a vague title. Don t summarize odd bits of information - it won t make sense. Don t repeat information or leave the reader to figure out the conclusion. 7

10 Print Size and Style Print information indicates essential content in the title, main headings and graphics Print size indicates relative importance: Use very large print for the title Use large print for headings Use smaller print for subheadings All print should be legible from 1 meter use at least 24 point; 36 point for headings S ome fancy print styles are hard to read
11 Poster Layout Indicate the flow of ideas using columns or rows Reader gravity: use top bottom and left right

13 Use Graphics for Impact Express your ideas using visuals: diagrams, tables, and pictures. Avoid visual chaos, with many jagged edges or various-sized boards that distract the viewer. Guide the viewer by using a visual grammar, an organized structure that emphasizes main ideas.
14 Balance Provide a good balance of visuals and print, separated by blank space. Aim for 40% graphic content and 60% print.
15 Rubric for Informational Posters POSTERS 1 Does not meet expectations 2 Minimally meets expectations 3 Fully meets expectations 4 Exceeds expectations Presentation Appearance Cluttered +/or sloppy; solid mass of print and graphics. Some blank space separates text and graphic elements; is either too much or too little. Text and graphic elements are separated by an effective use of blank space. Text and graphic elements are aesthetically arranged: blank space is used effectively; decorative elements may be present. Balance All text or all graphics. Too much text or too many graphics Proportion of text and graphics appears balanced Text and graphic elements are balanced and provide integration of information. Flow No obvious reading path. A reading path is, but sometimes doesn t flow from one element to another. The reading path is clear and flows from one element to the next in a logical way.
