1 Installing CSU s Recommended Version of Java On Windows PC s For Use With RamCT Summer 2010 I. Common Issues When Using An Incorrect Version of Java With RamCT II. Checking the version of Java installed on your Windows PC III. Uninstall previous versions of Java IV. Install Java version that works with RamCT V. Constant Security Warning Adjust Setting VI. Turn Off Auto Update VII. RamCT Support RamCT relies heavily on a software language called Java to display content, upload files, open the grade book etc. Most Windows computers already come with a version of Java installed on them. Unfortunately, RamCT can be particular regarding the version of Java it needs to work properly so you should use the version of Java recommended by CSU on your computer. DO NOT USE the version of Java that is listed on the WebCT/RamCT Browser Check web page. Please use the version of Java CSU recommends which is posted at: Information on how to uninstall previous Java versions and how to install the recommended version is listed below. I. Common Issues When Using An Incorrect Version of Java With RamCT: Constant popup windows appear when you are using RamCT complaining about the version of Java you have installed on your computer is not validated to work with RamCT. Instructor browser locks up when uploading files using the RamCT file manager. Student browser locks up when trying to submit an assignment. Instructors cannot see the My Computer icon when trying to upload files to RamCT. The window that instructors use to browse under My Files is very small. If you are having any of these concerns, we recommend uninstalling your current version of Java and installing the version recommended for use with RamCT. NOTE: If you have other applications on your computer that require a different version of Java, you will need to decide which version of Java to use. You will usually encounter problems if you try to run multiple versions of Java on your computer. II. Checking the version of Java installed on your Windows PC a. From the Start Menu go to Settings and select Control Panel b. Double click on the Java item Note: If you don t see a Java item in your Control Panel then Java is not installed on your computer. Proceed to step IV.

2 c. On the General tab click on the About button d. Compare the version number listed on your computer to the recommended versions posted at: e. If you have the recommended version installed on your computer then your Java version will work with RamCT OR f. If you have a different version than the recommended versions or if you have multiple versions of Java on your computer, please proceed to the Uninstall previous versions of Java section below. III. Uninstall previous versions of Java a. From the Start menu go to Settings and select Control Panel b. Windows XP: Double click on Add/Remove Programs Windows Vista/Windows 7: Double click on Programs and Features. Summer

3 c. Scroll down to the Java item (s) (It may be called Java or JSE Runtime Environment). d. Click on the Java item. e. Windows XP: Click on the Remove button. Windows Vista/Windows 7: Click and select Uninstall. f. Once all previous versions of Java have been removed restart your computer. IV. Install a Java version that works with RamCT a. In a browser window (Internet Explorer, Firefox) go to: b. In the left column, under Working with RamCT, click on the Java/Run Browser Check link. c. Under Install Recommended Version of Java click on Instructions. d. Click on Windows PC and Java. e. Click Use this link to download. f. You will be prompted to Run or Cancel the installation. g. Click on Run. Summer

4 h. Click Install. If prompted, close your browser to allow the installation to proceed. i. UNCHECK the box next to Bing Toolbar or OpenOffice Installer and/or the Install MSN Toolbar item. j. Click Next k. This will install Java on your computer. V. Constant Security Warning Adjust Setting You may see this window when you login or working in RamCT. You can adjust a Java setting to minimize how often you see this warning. This applies to users have have installed Java 1.6 Update 19 or higher on your PC. To adjust Java so it will work well with RamCT, please follow the easy to follow steps below. Summer

5 a. Under the Java Control Panel Advanced tab click on the + symbol next to Security. b. Click on the + symbol next to Mixed code. c. Check the second item: Enable-hide warning and run with protections. d. At the bottom of the page click OK. VI. Turn off Java Auto Updates Because we are using a particular version of Java we do not want the program to automatically download updates. This may download a version of Java that is not compatible with RamCT. a. From the Start menu go to Settings and then Control Panel b. Double click on the Java icon c. Click on the Update tab d. UNCHECK the Check for updates Automatically box. e. When prompted to check for updates weekly or never check select never check f. Click the OK button. Summer
