1 Kindergarten Lesson Plans & Activities for Word Families 1. Make a Word (This activity is for children who have had a class lesson on onsetrime word building) CCSS.EL A Literacy.FR.K.2 Recognize and produce rhyming words; RF.K.3a Demonstrate basic knowledge of letter sound correspondences. Ahead of time make alphabet letter cards or write a letter on a popsicle stick or tongue depressor. Print consonants in one color and vowels in another for quick sorting. Place 5 10 consonant cards or sticks in a paper bag. Each child has a sheet of paper with rimes written on it (for example, ap and an). You could also have the rimes on tag board rectangles, held together by a metal ring. A child draws a card or stick from the bag and places it at the beginning of the onset. He says the word, decides if it makes sense, and writes it on his/her recording sheet or Word Book page. When the child has written a number of words, he/she can choose which ones to illustrate in the Word Book. An adult listens to the child read the words aloud and children read their Word Book to each other. 2. Find the Cat (This activity could be used for TK if children are matching the sounds for the pictures they see. This activity can be a file folder game for rhyming practice). Thanks to Karen Finch. CCSS.ELA Literacy.RF.K.2b Blend and segment onsets & rimes of single syllable spoken words. Make a cat template, cut out pictures of cats, and press an adhesive picture on its stomach. The picture must rhyme with another cat s picture (for example, log & dog, fish & dish). Glue one of each pair onto the inside of a manila file folder. Do not cover fold line. On the back of the file folder, place a square of construction paper. Laminate the folder and cut the plastic above the construction paper so you can put a baggie in it of the other cat pictures. Children take out the pictures from the baggie and match them with the correct rhyming pair. They read their answers to another student or adult. To make it more advanced, children write the rhyming words in their Word Book and illustrate. They add more words/pictures that rhyme. Share their books at Circle Time.

The Hungry Thing This book by Jan Slepian has wonderful rhymes and children love the plot of trying to help a monster get fed. {Cris, Insert picture of book here} CCSS EL A Literacy.RF.K.2e Add or substitute individual sounds (phonemes) in simple onesyllable words to make new words. Read the story to the children, using lots of variations in tone. Using a large box, decorate it to make it look like the monster in the book. Cut a large opening for its mouth. During Small Group Time or Choice Time, children cut magazine pictures of food the monster might like. They think of rhyming words for the name of the food. During Whole Group Time, children take turns going to the monster and saying something like Smancakes, sounds like fancakes, sounds like pancakes to me! Then they feed the monster by putting the picture into its mouth. The teacher records the words children rhymed with. 4. Jump Rope Rhyming Chants Children do not have to be able to jump rope or even have ropes. They can pretend to be holding and turning a rope. You can also put a rope on the ground and they can jump over it. You can just have the students jump and sing the chant count up to 10 or finish the alphabet then move on to the next chant. 3 2. DOWN IN THE VALLEY This rhyme begins with the rope being swung back and forth instead of overhead. When the counting part begins, the rope is swung overhead. Down in the valley Where the green grass grows, There sat Janey Sweet as a rose. Along came Johnny And kissed her on the cheek. How many kisses Did she get this week? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5...._ 4. TEDDY BEAR While jumping to this rhyme, jumpers must perform the actions mentioned. Turn around. Touch the ground. Touch your shoe. That will do. Go upstairs. Say your prayers. Turn out the light. Say good night! 5. SPANISH DANCER In this rhyme as in "Teddy Bear," the jumper must perform the actions called for. The splits are just a wide legged jump. At the end, the jumper must jump with eyes closed while the other kids count. Not last night but the night before, Twenty four robbers came knocking at my door I asked them what they wanted, And this is what they said: Spanish Dancer, do the splits, Spanish Dancer, do the twist, Spanish Dancer, turn around Spanish Dancer, touch the ground, Spanish Dancer, go out the back Spanish Dancer, please come back. Spanish Dancer, read a book.

4 Spanish Dancer, do not look. 1, 2, 3, 4, I LIKE COFFEE In this rhyme, the first jumper inserts the name of a friend she wants to join her in jumping. Then that friend inserts the name of another friend, who also joins them in jumping. The game continues until the group is too large to fit or until everyone is jumping. I like coffee, I like tea, I'd like for Janey To come in with me. 7. I HAD A LITTLE PUPPY I had a little puppy His name was Tiny Tim I put him in the bathtub, to see if he could swim He drank all the water, he ate a bar of soap The next thing you know he had a bubble in his throat. In came the doctor, (person jumps in) In came the nurse,( person jumps in) In came the lady with the alligator purse (person jumps in) Out went the doctor (person jumps out) Out went the nurse (person jumps out) Out went the lady with the alligator purse (person jumps out) 8. DUTCH GIRL Act out the different things as you're jumping rope I'm a little Dutch girl dressed in blue, Here are the things I like to do: Salute to the captain (salute) Bow to the queen (bow) Turn my back on the submarine (turn around and face the other direction) I can do the tap dance (dance) I can do the splits (jump up high with legs apart) I can do the hokey pokey (turn yourself around) Just like this! 9. GYPSY, GYPSY Gypsy, Gypsy please tell me, what my fortune's going to be. Rich man, poor man, beggar man, or thief? Doctor, lawyer, or Indian chief? Tinker, tailor, cowboy, or sailor?

5 10. MISS BROWN I went down town to see Miss Brown. She gave me a nickel to buy a pickle. The pickle was sour so she gave me a flower. The flower was black so she gave me a snack. The snack was hard so she gave me a card. On the card it said: Little Spanish dancer turn around, Little Spanish dancer touch the ground. Little Spanish dancer tie your shoe, Little Spanish dancer SKIDOO.
